D. Smith: Time for Jose to start again

Quote:
Is it time?

To put Jose Calderon back in the Raptors starting lineup that is.

Itís been four games, two wins and two losses, since he returned last week in Orlando and there is no question heís playing well.

He looks 100 per cent, is shooting 14-for-26 from the field with 20 assist in those four games, heís getting to the rim on offence easily, heís playing about 23 minutes a game and his defence, well, Iím not going to talk about his defence because itís not as bad as you think but you wonít believe me.

Now, I donít know if Jay shares this opinion, but I think the offence runs better with Calderon at the helm, heís better at pick and roll and Calderonís a better spot up shooter (no small fact when you consider the needs of Hedo Turkoglu to have the ball a bit more often.

With two days of practice and a shootaround before the Knicks game, I donít know that thereís going to be a better time to get him some work with the first unit, get Jarrett Jack back working with the Young Guns and make the switch.

So, yes.

Itís time.

Ummm..."he's getting to the rim easily"...really? Maybe I haven't been watching the same games as Doug but other than a couple of uncontested lay-ups I wouldn't exactly say that he's been getting to the rim easily.

Doug is wierd. Personally both player have their deficiencies and almost interchangable. Really making both players AWESOME backups and AVERAGE starters. I don't think if either starts it really matter. I'd prefer Jack starting he just has a little better D and a little more toughness. The only toughness Jose gives is out of his mouth.

Personally, Doug Smith loves Calderon wayyyy too much.

It's a tough call here . Do you go with your best pg Jose and let him play with the starters or keep Jack with the starters where there is less pressure for him ? Jose can become more of a scorer with the bench players and more of a impact then Jack. I think we get more bang for your buck with Jose coming off the bench because how our team is built. Both guys are even on d however Jose is clearly the better offensive player so let him run with the second unit.

This is probably my favourite of your posts. Everything after calling Jose our best point guard and before saying their D is even is really fair, balanced and good!

Jose has been more aggressive in looking for his shot while coming off the bench. I'm not sure if that's him trying to make a statement or being asked to shoot more, but when Jose's aggressive and getting his own offense he is a very good PG.

I'd still rather see Jack starting. Jose is more skilled as a basketball player but JJ's defense and grit have made him a better fit with the starters. It's been very obvious to me at least that the starters have taken on and conformed to JJ's toughness since he's been the starter and it's shown on defense and on the boards.

Only 2 reasons why Jose won't start.

#1 BC trying to trade him and they want to keep continuity with Jack working with the starters.

#2 Jose coming off the bench can really kick start the second unit.

Note : just watched Raptors today , Jose was wearing a starters practise jersey. Maybe Jose will start next game.

No, he said he would be the starter after being back for 4-5 games if there were no setbacks.

jack starting works better for the team imo
jose thrives off the bench, where competition is not as quick
jack is not a better player, but he's a better fit with the starters, for the same reasons derozan needs to start. He benefits from the spacing created by Bosh and bargnani, and often finds clear paths through the middle, which is the only way he knows how to get to the basket
