D. Smith: Team being a bit disingenuous about Hedo+ Mask

Quote:
Should he or shouldn’t he?

Turk and the mask, that is.

Guy takes a practice off and all heck breaks loose about facial protection for an injured guy’s broken orbital bone.

Synopsis:

Doctors say Turkoglu is cleared to play as long as he wears a mask.

Turkoglu says he doesn’t want to wear it, it feels uncomfortable, he’s a grown man, there’s risk there anyway and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

What to do?

I can really see both sides and I don’t know that there’s a right or a wrong answer.

The risks inherent with playing professional sports are obvious. Everyone’s one missed step away from having a career end in a flash of pain and torn ligaments and cartilages or what-have-you and I don’t know that a piece of plastic on a face really makes all the difference in the world.

Do you lessen the risk by putting on a mask? Maybe. Marginally. But I don’t know for sure. No one does.

If someone gets hit with enough force to break a bone, I imagine that same blow would cause just as much damage whether there’s a bit of protection or not.

And the argument that the Raptors need to “protect their investment” is, to me, flawed. Their “investments” are at risk every second of every game; they’re actually at risk every second of every day, regardless.

That’s just the way it is and to all of sudden start bringing up that argument seems a wee bit disingenuous.

Look at it this way:

Let’s say Player A, who doesn’t tape his ankles routinely because it’s uncomfortable, sprains an ankle in some game.

He sits out a week or so, the swelling goes down, the doctors clear him to play and the staff suggests that maybe he’s got a smaller chance of spraining that ankle again if he gets it taped every game.

Player A says, ‘nah, I’m cool. Hate the tape, doesn’t feel right, limits what I can do on the court.’

You think the team would insist he tape it up and play? I don’t.

Anyway, I have no idea how it will get resolved – don’t imagine I’ll know until about noon tomorrow – but I can certainly see Hedo’s point.

And kind of agree with it.

There's a difference between a sprained ankle and potential vision loss. Doug is missing the nuanced position by over-generalizing.

I'm of the opinion that he doesn't play if he doesn't wear a mask and it's on management to make sure Hedo doesn't step out on the court unless he's protected. Do you risk long-term sacrifice for short-term gain?

Fuck being a man, screw being comfortable. So what if with his mucked up eye he comes back and wins three games for us? What if in game four he catches an errant elbow in the face and like ligeia said, can't see for the rest of his life? What then? $50 million down the drain and you're only three wins ahead of where you were before.

Someone's gotta man the fuck up and tell him to put up with the mask or shutup. Doug is a maroon.

Here's a question:

If he goes out there wearing a mask and is uncomfortable and uspset is he gonna play even worse then he has?

Possibly...at least in the sense that it might kill the momentum he might have gained from the NY game. From an offensive standpoint, he was playing decent ealier in the year, averaging about 14 ppg during the first 20 or so games. The NY games might have been the first step to returning to that production.

But if he ends up blind, he ain't going to be making any clutch plays during the playoffs.

I agree with doug smith... I also feel that if i get in a car accident the seatbelt might not save me. Plus it makes me feel a little uncomfortable and it restricts my ability to steer... the seatbelt might even cause an accident.

I think any momentum has already been lost from the NY game...

"Somebody", I hope that you were being sarcastic.

The face mask is simple physics, sort of like snow shoes. You disperse the energy of an elbow, fist, etc, over the entire facemask, rather than at the point of impact.

Doug doesn't know for sure whether the facemask would protect Hedo, but others do... he should keep his ignoramus opinions to himself... : )

I think somebody was actually making the point perfectly well.

A seatbelt makes you uncomfortable. A seatbelt doesn't guarantee that you won't be hurt in an accident. Still, most people would regard it as absurd to drive around town without a seatbelt on, because it just doesn't make sense to take that risk over an issue of comfort.

Hedo needs to suck it up.

Yeah, I think "somebody" was being sarcastic and it does make the point well. I agree with it and that's why I ended my post with "If he ends up blind, he ain't going to be making any clutch shots in the playoffs."

It is a scientifically proven fact that seat belts save lives in accidents. To try and draw an analogy from seat belts is fundamentally flawed.

I think this is something the NBA and players union need to get behind. Seriously.

If he can play with the mask but refuses to because he doesn't like it, the Raptors shouldn't be on the hook for his contract over time he suffers greater damage from a RELATED injury.

Otherwise, if Turk won't play because he hates the mask, he shouldn't get paid because he doesn't have a good reason not to play.

Am I insane?

Dude, I think "somebody" is joking. That's the point. The user would probably agree with you, it's just that "somebody" was making the point in a sarcastic fashion.

I agree completely. I personally could not care less if hedo wants to play without a mask but i would not tolerate him sitting out because he feel's goofy in it.

either play with the mask, or without it but there is no way he should be paid if he sits out because mask's dont suit him. i can hear the roar of boo's now
