Indeed. Still, an expiring contract of a useful player for a late first-rounder plus either a TPE or a useless expiring doesn't seem to be out of the question (e.g. Barbosa).

Davis + #7ish pick for INSERT STAR HERE
If it's a 7th pick and the star is of a youngish variety - why not?

However (see "the plan" timeline above), all this won't become clearer until at least the lottery.

I think you can easily make a deal like this
but don't expect an all star in their prime for #7, try something in the #1-3 range for that kind of return.

Think from the other guy's perspective. In Davis and the #7 you get two future solid rotation players at a very good price. However, they won't provide a lot of help for at least one year, so the benefits are delayed. They won't trade any core players for something like that. Your best bets are veterans on rebuilding teams, players who are still kicking (ray allen, KG etc), but they don't have much left.

Still, I definitely think we can get a late (22+) first rounder for barbosa or jose, the only problem will be timing. Until Howard is settled, the Lakers, Dallas and Orlando won't make any side moves. Once that happens, will there be enough time? Also, what is the competition for our players, we're not the only ones selling barbosa type of players.

A really nice move would be if we could get bledsoe for barbosa, they really need a SG and bledsoe is overkill. We could also throw in gray which would help them as well. Bledsoe was playing really well before the injury, so that might be interesting.
