D. Smith: Something significant coming before the draft

Quote:
I don’t know precisely why – that’s the thing about Spidey Senses – but there’s just a feeling that something’s going to happen over the next 10 days to shake up this basketball team I cover.

Just from conversations I had in Boston and with a couple of other sources throughout the league, the over-riding sense is that Bryan is going to try to do something of significance before the draft and there is precedent for it.

I remember the night two years ago almost to the day – it was the Saturday of what’s become almost the annual free agent camp here – that a guy whispered to me that Jermaine O’Neal was probably going to be a Raptor and that it was all coming down around the draft.

Armed with the 13th pick and a whole bunch of players of varying degree of talent and contractual obligation to dangle, the chatter is that the president and GM of the Heroes Of The Hardcourt has something up his sleeve as one conversationalist put it yesterday:

“It’s too quiet, he’s got to have something going on.”

The thing about Bryan’s job this time around is that he’s got a lot of disparate parts to move in trades, which would make it easier to make a move, wouldn’t it? He’s got Hedo -- bad contract but, trust me, a guy whose reputation around the league is better than it is here)

He’s got Jarrett – good contract, coming off a so-so year.

He’s got Jose – not-so-good contract but, again, trust me, a guy whose reputation around the league is better than it is here.

He’s also got the No. 13 pick, which isn’t particularly coveted but which could definitely be in play in some package.

Now, I could be entirely wrong about this – not that that’s ever happened before – but all signs point to some kind of transaction coming down the pike before the draft

But then we’ve got some interesting bigs in Marshall’s Hassan Whiteside and Solomon Alabi of Florida State. Whiteside’s better thought-of but both “people of interest” to the Raptors.

fans are quick to point out BC mistakes.
but you are not going to see this much action from any other G.M's

when ever BC has made a mistake, he is quick to get rid of the problem
kapono, O'neil and now working on getting rid of turk

he sure makes Raptors off seasons fun lol

Yet 15Mil in expirings and 20-25Mil locked into players that will likely be traded over the summer.

Guess I’ve got some stuff to do once I get back around the lads for the workouts today and Thursday.

I would look to move Jose + Hedo for sure before the draft, but Jack stays for me, He showed he can handle an offense and more importantly be a team leader. Im sure most Raptor fans inlcuding myself prefer Jack than Jose + wouldn't mind seeing the back of Jose, there is something about Jack that just seems to spark with the team, so he is a keeper for me

Id keep Jack + have him starting from next season, but it depends if They draft a PG with the 13th pick, if they do then obviously try look to move Jack, but he stays for me

If the package is right ... Do you guys think he'll move one of Jose / Jack + Bargnani??

BC needs to do everything in his power to have CB4 to resign... And if that means move Bargs then so be it!

BC should look to move anybody that returns good value, not choose which pg he'd rather keep... neither has shown to be much better than the other, and in my opinion, both are not good enough to be the starter, and too well paid to be the backup... I'd advocate moving both, and bringing in a senior college pg from the second round of the draft as a backup.

I think he shouldn't do "anything" and I seriously think you might be underestimating Bargs in this situation, especially alongside Bosh going forward.

I agree with this. Darren Collison from New Oreleans would be a player that i would'nt mind seeing in Toronto

The problem with trying to get Collison is that you're going to have to take on a crap contract from the Hornets. They're just not going to give away an asset like Collison.

so take on a crap contract... move some expirings their way that aren't contributing here... like reggie or banks. It's not like they wouldn't get any production from those crap contracts, like okafor or peja, because those guys would still be contributing more than reggie or banks has.

They want to get rid of Okafor as well. And personally I wouldn't mind taking in Okafor even with his history of injuries. We have Amir, Bargnani, Evans and potentially Dorsey as bigs. We could also pick someone up young and big in the draft since we would already have the point guard situation sorted out.

So, let me get this straight.. a lot of you want to acquire a highly paid, undersized, somewhat injury prone centre just to acquire Collison? Collison is nice, but not to the tune of acquiring Posey or Okafor. Collison has speed to burn, but he's quite smallish and he turns the ball over quite often. I'd look in another direction, notably, at Kentucky's Eric Bledsoe if Colangelo is able to acquire another selection in the first round.

I could agree to that stream of thought too... though Okafor isn't that old, and would be a great defensive minded big that doesn't need touches and will rebound... so I wouldn't be so opposed if he was the contract... also given that we could move one of hedo, jack or jose elsewhere...

Okafor has the potential to disappoint as much as Hedo did this year.

If you're going to spend 10+ mil plus on someone (and a bigman at that too), they had better be a difference maker..and Okafor isn't one. Neither is Collison. Is this team that much better with Okafor and Collison than Hedo and Calderon? Highly debatable.
