Raptors D. Smith: Raptors traded the wrong PG

His crush on Jose is still alive. lol

Doug Smith's Sports Blog

Quote:
*backup who can serve a possible portend for the starter

This wasn't a shot across the bow at all, more a move that everyone knew had to be made the minute last season ended. But you had to know at some point, someone connected to the highest level of Raptordom thought yesterday:“Hey, Kyle, see what we just did?"The addition of DJ Augustin (and we'll have to get a ruling on whether it's D.J. or DJ) gives the Raptors a former starting NBA point guard as a backup now, a guy who comes from a year at a defensive-oriented Indy program and someone who is solid if unspectacular five-year veteran who has to be able to help. And he good insurance against Lowry either getting hurt or having an off-year as they could have gotten once the past regime panicked and bailed on the better guard in Jose Calderon.

Make no mistake about it, this coming season is one of huge significance for Lowry. He did not at any level have a good year last year, he was okay but not what many expected, and now in a contract year, he is at a crossroads. We’ll get far more into this when things started for real when training camp rolls around but there is a huge amount of pressure on the point guard this time around. He either turns himself into a continued NBA starter and gets a next contract that reflects that in the wages he earns or, in this day and age of free agency, he could very well become a guy who plays the rest of his days on a series of small-value, one-year contracts.

Kind of like the last two deals for Augustin, who was a Top 10 pick five years ago and is now a guy who is lurching year to year, getting whatever he can wherever he can from teams that are not willing to offer lucrative long-term deals to players without tremendous potential or a history of success.Yes, Augustin was a solid pickup for the Raptors and a cautionary tale for the incumbent.

Not sure what Smith has been watching, but Augustin hasn't been a starting-calibre PG for two seasons. Augustin offers insurance in case Lowry gets injured, but he's not going to challenge Lowry for the starting role.

He's never liked Lowry, always crushed on Jose. Oh and he's probably barely watched Augustine and has no clue as is often the case with this guy. Out to lunch

Jose is off to his second team since being a Raptor, Dougie needs to let it go...

Smith hasn't got a brain in his head. What kind of dumbass resurrects an old issue after it's been dealt with? I guess Masai isn't feeding him nuggets like Colangelo did, so he's acting like an infantile two year old having a tantrum. He's just a grumpy old man who needs a fresh Depends. Did he post here as raptor123?

Right now, neither Lowry or Calderon have proven themselves to be capable long-term point guards, who can carry heavy minutes.

His assessment isn't that far off. And it really is something that can be applied to almost all point guards. Lasting success is difficult to attain in this league right now at that position. It's much easier to have your abilities questioned, and so much depends on having the right circumstances. I think Lowry is going to handle the extra pressure just fine, and having a more complete and balanced roster from day one is going to make a difference.

First DJ should not be a starter in this league, if he's watched him in Indiana I think he's get that . Second What is Doug talking about?

Man Doug needs to move on from Jose.

I think you will see a different Jose now that he has a contract.

I expect 7ppg 7apg & a couple of hamstring injuries to boot!

I will put it this way. Neither was/ is suitable for us at this point. Jose was very steady, good passer, 3 point shooter but not a good defender. Lowry is a good defender, above average but our offence was idle after the trade. Gay and AA played hero ball, part of it because Lowry looked lost at times and we needed someone who can score for us.
DJ is a decent backup for this team, will see how he blends in.

To be fair he was an unrestricted free agent.

And lol Doug, maybe if we're tanking Jose is the better fit

Oh man you got -9 already. Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with your statement though. I think Jose at this point of his career is what you see is what you get palyer. Lowry looked like an allstar in Houston, and I hope he brings it next season, but I won’t be surprised if we trade him. He is not untouchable. At this point the only untouchable Raptor is JV.

This was posted on realgm, and sums it up for me...

Doug has never liked Lowry

It's telling that he thought that we might decline his team option, on the grounds that Lowry isn't worth having around for just one year at $6 million. No one else anywhere even considered that we might do that, due to the fact that you'd have to be an idiot to consider it. That's clearly a great deal for Lowry.

Doug just wants him off the team, and there's no way to take his opinions seriously when it comes to Kyle. Not that Doug should ever be taken seriously.

Calderon sucks, I'm glad we moved on from that era.

Good question It seems like a lot of members around here think Jose was useless and Lowry is the real deal. jeffb will be happy to elaborate.
