D. Smith: Raps looking to deal Wright for an upgrade @ the wing?

Quote:
We’re standing on the concourse waiting for practice to end Tuesday – a few minutes before we saw DeMar come limping out of the gym – when a great visitor from the west came out of the elevator.

Wayne Embry, who remains the guy who started this whole Raptors renaissance in motion by getting the Knicks to take Jalen Rose way back in the day, is in town and it can only mean one thing:

Trade deadline’s coming and all hands are on deck to talk about it.

Along with the presence of Jim Kelly, who we saw out and about Sunday evening, it’s time for those kinds of organizational meetings that happen once or twice a year.

(Trust me, Wayne’s pretty anti-winter and to see him here instead of at his warm Arizona home means it’s a command performance).

With the trade deadline three weeks from today, it’s about time to start figuring out what’s out there in the deal world anyway.

About the only thing of real interest I’m hearing from the Usual Suspects I talk to in the organization is that there is some chatter from teams interested in Antoine Wright but that the Raptors would be looking at an upgrade at the backup two-three spot without a huge financial burden if they were to move him.

The sense I’m getting from these conversations is that there’s nothing huge percolating at the moment and that there’s not a lot of activity being initiated by the Raptors.

But I warn you – and I warn you every year about now – things can happen relatively fast and just because there isn’t anything going on now doesn’t mean there won’t be anything going on Feb. 18 when it comes time to fish or cut bait.

How can we get Butler?

Throw in jack or caldy? + a 2nd rounder?

So we're going to trade Wright for a guy who's got a similar contract, who plays the same position, who's an upgrade?

Okay, sure.

I wouldn't call it farfetched. Colangelo did pull of a Belinelli for Devean George. The guy knows how to get things done.

Except that Wright is already a pretty good back up.

Who is out there that is better and is on the cheap?

Wright's been horrible most of the season. Up until a few weeks ago, he was persona non grata around here.

You're just looking at Wright to play D, notsomuch to provide offense. His 1.4 (or whatever he earns) is peanuts. You won't be able to find someone that's actually going to be an upgrade.

Um, wright has been Toronto's best defender, period.

toronto cant defend.

trade wright for a guy that can score.

toronto can score.

Yep, sounds like an MLSE decision to me!

Persona non grata? Did you see that in the captivate television monitor in the elevator this morning and was just dying to use it in a situation?

Wright's been exactly what MOST have expected. He plays solid D and is an important member of this rotation going forward.

He makes 2.1Mil.

I agree an upgrade at that $$?? Who knows. But perhaps we'd take a player making up to 3Mil with 1-2 years left on his contract and give a team Wright's expiring.

My feeling is Rasho/Wright will be packaged since they're 4Mil in expirings, possibly in a Jose trade?

Take a quick read at some threads and posts at around Christmas, people were calling him the biggest disapointment here right behind Turk.

But here's the thing - he's playing decent ball right now, isn't he? So, why deal him? You're not going to get a real upgrade.

He doesn't get paid enough in terms of NBA salaries to be a disappointment. People are disappointed because his jumpshot isn't consistent and he doesn't score. But that's not his forte.

EDIT: I don't need to take a quick read about the threads on here about Wright. Those on here with real basketball knowledge know that Wright is a valuable piece on this team.

He also played through a myriad of injuries.

We need Antoine Wright to defend the Kobe`s, Lebron`s, Wade`s, Brandon Roy`s in the fourth.

I think he`s the perfect guy for that.

And he hustles. And he`s gritty.

And we`ve been winning.

Oh yeah, go there! Unbelieveable! Now that he's finally playing ok (not great by any stretch), the people with Basketball "knowledge" new all along how "valuable he really was? And the rest are all dolts i guess?

Unless we're getting Kevin Martin or Caron Butler, I'd prefer not to trade Rasho or Wright. Although Rasho's a backup, he's the only guy on the roster with a ring. And Wright's one of our only defenders.

Bingo! He isn't playing that great imo, but the fact that we're winning (which has to do with guys like Jack/Bosh/Bargs more then Wright) means we don't want anyone traded because all of a sudden they're valuable.

I'm not saying trade him, or keep him. It's just funny how people get attatched to a bench player weeks after they were willing to trade him for gatarade now that we've won some games. lol

So nobody should be dealt? We're that good?

I would not trade AW for Kevin Martin. I would never replace a defender with a scorer, given the offensive firepower of our team. Kevin Martin is too skinny.

Actually jeff, some of us liked Wright all along. Some of us didn't write him off...just like some of us didn't write off Jack.

And some of us don't post 900 times in every game thread and demand we trade a player becuase of one bad play and then laud him as a potential All-Star because he makes a good play later in the game.
