D. Smith: Raps have big plans for free agency

Quote:
With three roster spots and up to $12 million to spend to fill them, I’ve got a feeling the Raptors are going to be in the news for the next little while, too. All of a sudden, they’re the team with practically the most cash available – if they want to spend it and there’s more on that later – and that makes agents drool.

So you’ll hear a lot of names over the next few days and a lot of speculation. You know, just like the last week or so. Be careful, though. Just because there’s a name linked to them doesn’t mean there’s mutual interest.
Quote:
Okay, that said, let’s get on with speculation.

Who’s out there? Well, they like Carlos Delfino, for sure. They like Rasho at the right number and when I was talking to him yesterday, I got a feeling if the number makes something remotely close to sense he’ll take it and they like a handful of other guys.

There are, as we’ve said all along, going to be some bargains out there.

And now that they’ve got the big ones taken care of, they can start specifically looking at holes.

They need help at the four and five.

They could use help at the two and three.

And if they remain unconvinced that Roko’s the guy and they are more comfortable with Douby not handling the ball an awful lot, there’s a point guard spot, too. Although with Turkoglu sure to initiate offence and if they get Delfino, that’s not a big worry.

Here are a few names I know have been discussed among members of the braintrust, some quite seriously.

They still like Linas Kleiza a little bit and there are those who have at least mentioned guys like Von Wafer and Matt Barnes and, yes, Josh Childress, but I think they’ve got less support than the others.

I have no idea if they’d make a call about Marvin Williams, although I’m not sure where he fits at the moment.

Here’s one that’s pretty intriguing given the way things have unfolded. There wasn’t a lot of interest before in him but I think they should absolutely give Jarrett Jack a call and see what it’ll take.

Of course, it may not be a matter of them making calls because they’re going to get hundreds.

Especially after this Bryan quote gets in circulation.

“I’m going to be looking to possibly do some short-term deals, I would love to sign a couple of guys to one-year deals even if it means paying a premium. That’s something that’s being discus.”

Seriously. You’ve got a GM talking about “paying a premium?” How popular is that going to make him?

BTW, didn't he say Kleiza was out of the question a few days ago??

They played together in GT.

I've wanted Jack for a while now, but I wouldn't want to spend all our money on him. I think we should address depth at wing, then down low, and finally at PG; unfortunately, this scenario doesn't leave us with enough money to give Jack since he won the starting PG spot over TJ by the end of the season...

Ya but stuff changes. That was before the trade saved the MLE we figured was gone. Now we have the MLE we can afford Kleiza so he's a possibility again.

Jack is probably not gonna happen. My guess is Kleiza or Barnes and then Delfino/Rasho. After that maybe a cheap PG?? That being said i think George and hopefully Douby will be moved somehow.

Childress would be the idea fit. However, if they do get Kleiza, we can play small ball and put a line-up like:

C=Bosh
PF=Kleiza
SF=Hedo
SG=Derozan
PG=Calderon

+1

But i don't see Childress coming here for MLE? But if you look at him and 4-5 other players, we could get some good pieces imo.

Wing depth should be the priority, followed by a backup point guard and another big man.

If I'm BC I go Williams / Childress, Delfino, Rasho.

Last year Pacers had the same dilemna the Raptors had two years, who is the starting PG? Ford or Jack? Ford went to the bench. Jack would create the same dilemna with the Raptors. Jack is not a SG, he is a point guard. Raptors sould get a natural wing player. Josh Childress. Josh is considering the Bucks. We are much better team than the Bucks, time to sign with us Josh. People say Josh wants more than the mid-level. Do the sign & trade with Atlanta, offering our expiring contracts & second round picks. Similiar to Memphis, Atlanta is losing cash big time. With heavy contracts of Josh Smith & Joe Johnson, another big contract to be offered to Marvin Williams this summer, and recent signing of ZAZA & bibby, I bet Atlanta bites. Besides they need the exprixing contracts to sign Joe Johnson & Al Horford next summer. Childress is available.

I never said I wanted this to be our starting line-up. If other teams employ small ball on us during the game, we can bring out this line-up.

So Childress would be our staring 2? I like it, especially RAPMAN's proposal. Atlanta would definetly bite because they know he ain't resigning with them. Its really a matter of if Josh wants to play for the Raptors. Thats what it will come down to.

Hedo would play the 4 in that scenario.

I think Childress is going to want some security, we can only offer him one year. plus if we sign him, we are going to need to play him alot, which will be hard considering Turk will play most of the game and Derozan and delfino will want their fair share of minutes. I won't agree with giving full MLE money to a player that is going to play less than a quarter of the game

Easy answer to that question. Don't sign Delfino. The great advantage of signing Hedo is that you have a wing player who can handle the ball with Jose. Childress is your lock down defender, and similiar to Marion, you don't have to draw up plays for Childress. He gets all his baskets around the rim which reflects his high FG%.
