Raptors D. Smith: Kleiza playing through Knee, achilles injuries

Quote:
Q: Hi Doug. Just curious as to your take on Kleiza at the moment? He had a terrific World Championships and pre-season and then sustained the injury. Do you think he's still hurting? I felt he was going to be a big part of the offence and it just hasn't happened. His ball handling has also been suspect as well as his three point shooting.

Jim F, London

A: Hes hurt and playing through it. His knees are sore and his Achilles still gives him a bit of a problem and those have contributed to his play. I would say hes been as big a disappointment as theres been on the team but I think its got to do with physical issues more than were being told publicly.

I'm getting deja vu of Calderon from last year. He was hurt, but they had him on the floor every game.

They need to let players heal. I dunno whose choice it is, but come on.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that Kleiza is yet another example of a player that seems to play well in International ball but can't translate that to the NBA. At the FIBA Worlds, Iguodala had 4 steals against Kleiza and held him to 4 points on 1 of 11 shooting. I think the increased competition and athleticism in the NBA is too much for Kleiza to be a starter, whether he's injured or not.

I would love to see Linas in Europe. Because when you are in team with Bargnani and rising DeRozen there is not much of a place for an attacking player. I think he would contricute more in teams that like to play defense. Dallas, Lakers, Orlando. But I will say he had good games, bad games. At the moment he is not a turnover prone, we all saw how he can rebound when Bargs was injured. He is quite a god shooter of dribble as well. Not a much of a dribbler but still. . .. So what's wrong with him? It's his psichology I think If he would be cold blooded like Bargnani he would be fine.

When you play against USA, you also play against 3 refs. 2 of those steals was clearly illegal.

I would like for him to sit and let the injuries heal. WTF is the point of having him play hurt?!!

Well, maybe not right now as we are rapidly running out of warm bodies, but as soon as Weems is back...

At this point in the season, 99% of the players in the league are playing through some sort of injury. Suck it up.

Meh I wouldnt call that sucking it up. Amir Johnson is a perfect example of what I mean. Playing through pain and contributing in a good way.

Playing through multiple injuries is sucking it up no matter how you slice it. If he was a player you liked you change your tune i would imagine.

+1.... to say that Amir is battling because he is putting up some positive stats is discounting the notion that he hasn't been playing well in other areas... it's the nature of not being 100%.

99%? Is that some proof or do you just like to make stuff up? Soreness, maybe but 99% of the players are definitely not playing through some sort of injury and the ones that play through it, we usually hear about it.

Not surprised Kleiza is playing through it... he kind of has to. The team bench if almost non-existent and it would vanish if Amir and Kleiza didn't play through their injuries.

Rough season for the Raps.

All I can say is that if he's going to be a part of this team then he'd better damn well be DONE with playing for Lithuania in the off-season.

This is getting ridiculous.

Why don't we just call up a bunch of guys from the d league and have them play out the rest of the games while our injured players heal.

YES, it's ridiculous when he's being paid MILLIONS by an NBA team to play for them.

All of the extra bball that's demanded of national team players obviously takes it's toll.... Kleiza has played for his country before and done his duty. It's time for him to fulfill his obligations to the team that's paying his salary....

... unless someone in Lithuania wants to do it instead of the Raptors?

Think first. Then respond.

... So don't sign with player, who wants to represent his country. What is his salary, 5 millions? Wow, it's almost the same Matt Carroll gets. No player goes to FIBA competitions (extra bball) when he is hurt. Even if FIBA is a little more important than national American league...
They are PROS and knows how to gain money.

But it's ridiculous when basketball fan says it's ridiculous when player play for his national team... Pathetic.

Could it be possible that these injuries are just being played up as a means of saving face while the team decides to sit him down and see what they have with him out of the equation? With the excuse of injury, he can accept being put in such a position a little easier, and the team doesn't kill his value so much.
