Default D. Smith: Delfino/Rasho talks ongoing

Quote:
Yes, today is Jarrett Jack Day here in the big smoke and we all knew that was coming for about a week.

But I was talking to a couple of Bryanís Henchmen yesterday trying to get a read on what else is going on and, frankly, itís about as earth-shattering as the Jack deal.

Negotiations with Delfino and Rasho are continuing but quite aside from the money issue Ė and thereís always a middle ground on money issues Ė things like length of contract and number of guaranteed years are factoring into things. Not unexpectedly, either, because we all know that whatever Bryanís doing, heís doing with one eye on potential tax troubles a year or two down the road.

Not sure where the snag is and I donít get the impression the talks are anywhere close to breaking off but itís a sticking point they have to work through.

Me?

Iíd probably draw the line at a three-year deal worth about $15 million total for Delfino but Iím not sure Iíd fully guarantee that last year and for Rasho Iíd give him two years at the biannual exception.

I will also say this:

If push came to shove and I could only get one, with the roster as itís presently constructed, I think itís far more important to get a backup centre than another swingman and Iíd get Rasho on board Ė or someone like him Ė pretty quickly.

Remember last year? With Will Solomon and Roko Ukic as the only backups to Jose Calderon and how bad that turned out? Well, itís not exactly the same but starting the season with Reggie Evans and Patrick OíBryant as your lone backup bigs simply isnít good enough.

I would do it especially if the 3rd year is a TO. Either way we could trade him if it doesn't workout after the 2nd season. Plus we'd be using our bird rights and it isn't my money. lol

In order to trade a player there has to be a team interested in him. 15 million and 3 years is a lot of coin.

$15M over 3 years is too much for Delfino.

Ehhhhhhh! It's not my money, and it's using the bird right not any of the exemptions. I want him here.

Not surprisingly, I agree with Smith on Rasho being more important than Delfino. The price (about 4 mil for two years) is right too.

Rasho is a good signing but 15 mil over 3 years for Delfino is too much IMO. I would love to have him here but I would say 4 mil is the max

Well then why don't we just offer him 6 mil cuz what does a 1 mil difference make, then if he doesn't accept 6 mil we can offer him 7 mil cuz what would a 1 mil difference make.

My thoughts exactly. I say get him here. We need rebounding, defence, playmaking and toughness on this team...he provides it, and streaky scoring as a bonus. I maintain he's a 6th/7th man type but still valuable nonetheless.

I guess so but that's why I just set my limit at one thing and stick to it. An Ideal contract for Delfino should be 12 mil 3 yr contract

I agree, but an extra Mil/yr isn't that big a deal to me considering it's our bird rights. Especially if it can be a 2yr deal plus a Team option for a 3rd.

$5M seems like a lot for Delfino. And, $1M per year is a lot if you're the beneficiary of the teacher's pension fund...

+1 - Team options are my favourite type of contract; That's why I love Rookie Contracts.

Exactly, it doesn't hurt our cap so what does anyone care what BC pays him?

We have two good young players in Wright and DeRozan at the two. We have two great young players in Caldy and Jack at 1. Delfino can't actually play 3, except sporadically as a backup, and we have a 10 mil/year Turk starting there. Ergo, there is little sense in committing major mulla to Delfino, especially considering that giving him too much can make him hard to move.

i dunno mike. wright/derozan is not a good enough combo at the two. i'd sign delfino, start him, use wright as a backup, and derozan as a 2-3 backup. wright gets the least minutes. just my opinion.
