D. Smith: Belinelli's play forcing JT to abort JJ/Jose backcourt

Quote:
I think we’re starting to see the Marco Belinelli that they hoped to see from the very first game of the season.

Three three-pointers in the second quarter, 16 points on 11 shots, a couple of drives, four rebounds, a couple of assists and a couple of steals.

Not bad numbers but, as you know, I never think numbers tell the whole tale so I will say this: Just watching him play with some energy – at both ends – was even more impressive than his shooting, which is going to come and go.

I thought he’d morph into a solid contributor a bit earlier than 10 games into the season (and that’s an issue I’ll get into more in tomorrow’s newspaper) but now he’s giving them what they want.

And what it’s also going to do is allow Jay to abort, for the most part, the Jose-Jarrett backcourt. I can see Jack getting all his minutes, barring foul trouble or injury, as the backup point guard, a role I think he’s best suited for.

At this point he's shooting 49% accross the board, so i'm not gonna get picky. The thing is, he seems to take most of his shots within the flow of the game and often creates for his teammates. He's always moving without the ball and gives us energy off the bench.

D. Smith: Belinelli's play forcing JT to abort JJ/Jose backcourt

So what do u tell JJ after it seems right from day one he was promised minutes at the 2. He signed with us expecting to get minutes either at the 1 or 2 spot. Looks like he has moved down the depth chart at the 2 so will he be happy with 15-20 mins of play.

Gotta do what's best for the team period.

Fuck it! He's being outplayed by practically everyone on the team, especially Derozan/Belinelli/Wright/Jose

Its no Belinelli play that's forcing the coach to abort the JJ&Jose backcourt. Its JJ's poor play that is mimizing his play on court. His outside shot is dreadful and he is commiting to many turnovers. Maybe he is trying to do too much or trying to adapt with new teammates, but it is clear the backcourt tandem of Jose & Jack is not working. I still like Jack, 5 million on back-up point guard is okay in my books. What do you prefer, spending 2 million on a player (Ukic) who belongs in the Euro-league, or 8-9 million player (Ford) who will complain of wanting to be starter. It sure beats last year, when the Raptors had the worst bench in the NBA. Jack will get better, and the Raptor bench will be an asset to the team.

It's a combination of Jack playing poorly and Belinelli playing well. Even if Jack were playing well at the two I'd say Belinelli is a better fit for what this team wants to do on offense. Better shooter, better two-guard defender, and sometimes Belinelli shows flashes of being a better creator than Jack.

From what I saw, Jack looked a lot better last night. He's a back up PG and until he accepts that role and gets accustomed to playing 23-26 minutes/night he'll struggle.

Beli, if anything has really impressed me by how much he moves out there. He's not a black hole as I thought he'd be. He knows he looked upon to score when he's out there but he's also looking to set teammates up. Also, the way he curls around screens reminds me alot of Rip Hamilton. He really, really makes his defender work. His shot may seem unbalanced at times, but it's effective.

He's definitely earned his minutes at the 2 and as a 6th-7th man.

Both Beli and Jack are typically aggressive when they're out there, looking to create for themselves and their teammates. I think the difference, though, is that Marco is a better shooter and passer, so he makes the most of the opportunities he creates. I'm all for giving Marco more burn.

I'd like to see what Belinelli could do in spot minutes at the one, especially if Jarrett Jack is struggling. He and Bargnani have incredible chemistry, especially off of the pick and roll.

I also have heard Jack Armstrong say a few times that Beli is one of the last to leave the gym and that he's a gym rat and is working hard on his game. This kid is only 23yrs old and he's only gonna get better.

One thing I'd like to see Belinelli work on is his blow-by ability, his first step isn't exactly lightning quick. Get him squatting in the weight room, have him do some serious core exercises and you'll see his game expand even quicker.

I think hes playing great, and a perfect role off the bench... HOWEVER... anyone else think a few of his shots are forced and bad decisions on shot selection...

there have been atleast 1 or 2 the last 2 games where i was like WTF why shoot that or that quick into the clock?

I know for 1 I never doubted the addition of Belli.

Same for JeffB.

Seems to me we were about the only ones speaking about how he was a peice that needed ot be added, and once he was, a peice that we were going to be glad we had.
