D. Smith: Belinelli makes things happen

Quote:
I know a lot of the chatter about DeRozan in the wake of his game Sunday but the one guy who caught my attention was Marco Belinelli.
Quote:
Here’s Jay on him:

“I just think he extends the defence. You have to guard him on the three-point line and when he gets it and you run at him, I don’t know if there’s a better situation in basketball than having a defender running at you.

"He’s a smart basketball player, he knows how to get into the lane and create for others.”

By my count, and I probably lost count, I had it at seven times that he put the ball on the floor on the wing and got in the paint to make something happen.

I can say with confidence that a Toronto wing didn’t do that seven times in a game all last season.

We go from having zero creators at the 2 and 3 spots last year to having three creators, with two of those three (Belinelli, Jack) coming off of the bench. In stretches I think I'll enjoy watching the bench more than the starters. Seeing Belinelli create for himself and teammates last night was a sight for sore eyes. He's a talented cat - very crafty at finishing around the rim, smooth shooting jumpers off screens, and very underrated court vision.

I like the way he busts ass on defence, fights around screens so his guys don't have to crawl out of position to cover for him. His willingness to take it inside is nice, however, I'll wait to see a whole year of this before I give him too much love.

If he can be a facsimle of Manu, I would be ecstatic. He doesn't have to be AS good, just similar.

He's not Manu, Manu-lite maybe?

But i'm thrilled he's here, especially considering we gave up George for him. That's highway robbery.

Just based on this fact alone, no one should be disappointed with what Bell ends up contributing.

he can do a lot of (good) things, even good defence. For sure is not an all-star player but i think is great to have on your team. and more he's not afraid to play in critical situation, after all He's a professional since He was 16
