Craving human contact.

Yeah, so talking to myself is getting a little dry over at EBS so I thought I'd poke my head in here to say "what up!" and share some thoughts....

I like what I'm seeing with the Raps so far this year.

Yes, we need a backup PG.

Yes, we need a backup swing.

Yes, we need to make sure that Bargs brings it every night so Bosh and JO don't have to play 40 min/gm.

But thus far this is the LEAST stressed that I've been in quite a few seasons.... we've finally quashed our PG controversy and I think that EVERYONE can finally agree that Jose was the right choice for the job (TJ who?). We've also FINALLY got some legit help down low for Chris which makes me very, very happy because I was really starting to worry that we were going to burn this kid out, expecting him to do EVERYTHING.

I have to say that Chris continues to impress with his stellar play and decision-making.... it seems like every year he's taking a step forward and you can really tell that the Team USA experience helped his confidence and his game. The one area that I WOULD like to see him get better at now is his individual man-to-man defense. For us to take the next step as a team and him to take the next step as a leader he has to be able to hold his own against opposing bigs in late-game situations. I thought that it was pretty embarassing that the Bucks chose to go straight at him on 3 or 4 possessions the other night (and scored). With JO on the team now and Jose taking a larger role, Chris shouldn't be as gassed in late-game situations and so I expect his performance at those times to improve this season. All that being said I still take him over Howard and perhaps even Amare. Sue me and call me a homer. I'm fine with that. lol.

As perhaps the biggest Bargnani-hater in raptor nation let me be the first to say that I was impressed with what he gave the team in the MIL game. Many will point to his game against GS but against the Bucks he FINALLY showed that he could impact the game WITHOUT scoring.... and that's what I've been waiting to see from him for ages. He still rebounds like an 8-yr girl (no offense to 8-yr old girls) but at least his positioning on D is getting much better and he's looking at the taking the ball to the rack and not just spotting up from 3. In an utterly surreal moment during the 4th Q of the Bucks game I was actually PISSED that Sam went with Moon for a while rather than Bargs... lol.... will wonders never cease? Good for the kid.... I hope that he keeps it up.

I've been pretty happy with our wing play for the most part, although I think that we're still relying WAY too much on AP (and how can you not when he plays like this). Moon is still struggling a bit with his consistency but he's showing signs.... his jumper is coming along and he's still a pest on D when his head's in the game. I'd still like him to use that crazy athleticism and take it to the rack a bit more.... Kapono has been pure sex from the perimeter. Has to be the best stroke in basketball right now. The release and the accuracy is Dell Curry-esque.

I have to say this though... I'm PISSED that PHX got Matt Barnes for the friggin' MINIMUM.... I remember saying that this guy should have been on our radar after the year that he had with GS... relatively young... tough... great spot-up shooter... good defender... he'd have fit in PERFECTLY. Oh well...

All-in-all I have to say that I'm pretty pumped that we're 3-0 at this point.... the Raptor teams of old could (and would) have easily imploded and lost the last 2 close games... but they didn't. More than anything else this encourages me... because if these boys can finally win the game that they're supposed to and gut out some "ugly wins" (on the road no less) when things aren't clicking perfectly.. well that's the mark of a great team.

hey TO.

Like you i'm equally happy in the way the team is looking after our first three games. Actaully, i can't really complain about much. I think the question marks that you bring up (PG, guard depth) aren't that big a deal if you think about it. Let's take a look:

Roko: while raw and young, shows great composure with the ball. not looking to shoot and finding his teammates quite well. Still getting used to the NBA game, but definately can handle the pressure of running the offense.

Moon: does he drive the ball enough? not reallly. BUT... look at his outside shot right now. He has really worked on it in the offseason, and i can't believe i'm saying this, but i actually have a lot of faith in him when he hoists one up. Dude is making his threes quite well and his pesky defense still a thorn in oposing teams.

Oneal: While his offense is still a tad inconsistant, his defense and mere presence has been huge for us. I;m loving this trade more and more.

Bargnani: Inconsistant on offense as well, but his defense and rebounding is MAsSIVELY improved. He's really stepped it up this year and is showing his potential. i think his scoring will go up seeing how he is more confident this year, but really i don't even care all that much. Defense, rebounding first - offense later. And defensively i really like what i see.

Add Graham and kapono who are also playing really well for us and Mitchell's short bench, I'm digging the 2008/2009 team. a lot.

Oh yeah... forgot about Parker. but the guy is amazing. Playing like the euroleague MVP.

:giggle: What .... A TO sighting? .... you must be lost. ;)

Overall to this point I'm very happy. My biggest concern is the lack of depth too. I think Roko will be fine as Jose's back-up eventhough he struggled to get the offense going on Saturday night, but with more games under his belt and following Jose's lead I think we'll be in great form come the New Year at the PG spot.

It's the wing players that are the crap shoot. Moon still looks uncomfortable out there on offense. I thought we'd see a new and improved version of Jamario, but outside of his decent defensive abilities he still camps out at the 3 point line looking to take three's.

I'd like to see more Kapono at this point. He showed opening night and the playoffs that he's instant offense. I'd like to see Sam run some more plays for Jason while out there by giving JO, Bargs and Bosh more looks in the post which will open up more opportunities for Kapono to do his thing from beyond the arc. :)

Good to see again TO .... try and make more frequent visits from here on out please. ;)

Consider this your birthday present. ; )

Yes, I echo your sentiments about Kapono as well.... when he's on the floor with Bosh, JO, Jose and AP our offense is a thing of beauty. It's actually one of the few times that I can remember in recent memory when I'm just totally at ease watching those guys play.

The next game against DET should best this team's first "big test"... It'll be interesting to see how they respond.

Hello TORap.

What up ACIE? : )

For $1M?

For that kind of money all you need is a heartbeat and a sharp suit to sit on the bench.

He's far better than people realize... a very good complimentary piece. 6th or 7th man.

He's a tougher version of Moon with a better jumpshot.

'trane 11-03-2008 10:46 AM

hey coach... good to see you here.

TORaptor4Ever 11-03-2008 10:51 AM

He's had one good stretch of games in the playoffs and that's it. It can't be a coincidence he's played on eight different teams in eight years.

What's your point? Billups played on 7-8 different teams before he found a good fit.

Barnes played very well for the Warriors in the reg. season as well for a good stretch of games... I remember because he was one of the fantasy STEALS of that year when we had our league lol...

I maintain that he'd be a GREAT pickup for alot of teams.

I would have actually given him as much as the MLE. Call me crazy. ; )

Yeah, but it was clear Billups wasn't a marginal talent, he was a lottery pick for a reason. Barnes has bounced around and done nothing pretty much everywhere he's played .How's he doing in Phoenix?

Gurk 11-03-2008 12:00 PM

He is actually doin good in Phoenix. Last game he had 21 points of the bench. If that's not good, I don't know what is

Acie 11-03-2008 12:16 PM

Okay, never mind then. ;)
