Competition for Lowry in FA

This thread has been started in the event that Kyle is not traded at or before the deadline and doesn`t sign an extension in season. When FA season begins, which teams do you think will re the Raptors competitors to sign Kyle and why do they want him.

It isn`t a thread about whether or not Masai should trade him or let him expire.

Top of the head...

Celtics, LAL, Pistons, Grizz, Nuggets, Bobcats, Bulls (I assume Rose is pretty much done). Not sure how many have cap space. Knicks do not I know that. The only team I see Lowry really going to that makes sense to me (will be competitive soon) is probably the Pistons.

Outside chance is the Pacers.

pzabby 01-06-2014 01:41 PM

why would the celts, grizz, or bulls be in for lowry? they all have better pg's than him

creative1mm 01-06-2014 01:47 PM

Pacers.. I think they need a pg

TORaptor4Ever 01-06-2014 01:52 PM

Pacers and Pistons would be perfect fits for him.

Carlos Danger 01-06-2014 02:05 PM

Many teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go for 10 million, maybe even 12 to a really desperate team.

Name the teams. Lot's of teams could be desperate, but a) will they have the cap space b) if they're desperate, would they have enough other assets for Kyle to be interested in playing for them?

wchoi213 01-06-2014 02:14 PM

Pacers don't have salary cap to throw enough salary for Lowry. I believe Lowry's expected contract would fall anywhere between 8-10M/yr, but Pacers is already paying $8M/yr to George Hill. Unless they ship George Hill away, Pacers will be out of competition.

Interesting fact is that most teams already have a solid staring PG or do not have enough salary cap.

Orlando - probably the strongest candidate. Their current starting PG is Jam Nelson, who sucks bad and has Team option for next year. Unless they decide to try Oladipo at Starting PG, they will consider opting out Jam Nelson's team contract and acquire a better PG.

Milwaukee - if they don't consider Brandon Knight as their future PG, then they might be interested.

Sacramento - If Isaiah Thomas does not extend his contract with SAC next year, they might chase for Lowry.

Lakers - If Nash can't recover from injury, they will definitely need a starting PG that will support Kobe. But, if they decide to throw enough money to Lowry, they have less salary caps to fill SF-PF-C positions.

Miami - Chalmers has not extended his contract and Big 3 has player option - where anyone can opt out for a new contract. If any of Big 3 leaves, they might have some cash to throw for Lowry, but not as much as Lowry expects.

All these above teams are "possible" destinations, but I honestly think Raptors is the ideal fit for Lowry at the moment. Raps have enough salary caps and all other positions are locked in for next year, so the team roaster is in good shape already.

Well I don't have a list in front of me, but I'm sure there will be many suitors that will pay for his services.

Nuggets have Lawson, Pistons have Jennings, Bobcats have Walker, Grizz have Conley, Celtics have Rondo, Bulls have Rose( don't assume Rose is done.

Kyle will get the money, but does he want to go someplace where he will be in competition for the starting role, and what team's want to pay big bucks for someone that might end up as the back-up?

Can't think of much teams, but I think Magic is one of them.

They already got solid good players at a cheap price (or still in rookie contract), like Afflalo, Harris, Davis, Vucevic, Oladipo, Nicholson, Harkless...

Their current PG is Jam Nelson and his contract will likely expire this season - as Magic has no reason to opt in his $8M contract for next year.

Unless Magic has a plan to acquire All-star level superstar (like Melo...) in their roster lineup, they have the most flexible salary cap and are the most possible team to land Lowry.

ya, but if you're going to say he'll go for 10-12 mill...u should have an idea of who you're talking about. cause that's reaching.

By all accounts Oladipo is their PG of the future... I'm pretty sure that guys like Nelson and Davis aren't in their plans (remains to be seen about Afflalo) so I can't see them bringing in Lowry. I think they'd throw big money at IT2 before that since he's young enough to match their core.

I don't think 10 million is reaching at all. The guy makes close to 7 right now. He's come a long way since he signed a deal for 7 per.

He wasn't commenting that Lowry was reaching. But that you were in your comment.

woodchuck 01-06-2014 04:19 PM

I'd say Lakers, maybe Magic, maybe Pistons.

Few teams have cap space. Fewer need point guards. Some teams will be scared away by Lowry's past inconsistency, his history of health and character issues.

Pistons have Jennings but I could see Dumars just signing him anyway. There's a history of signing talent over fit in Detroit.
Magic are trying Oladipo at point guard and have Nelson as a decent placeholder. Besides, they'll have a high pick and this draft has a lot of point guards. So they may be off the list as well.

So I think the Lakers are the biggest competition. I suspect they'll miss on their main targets, target Lowry or Deng some other borderline all-star, and then focus on 2015 free agents.

He was saying that he wasn't reaching in his comment, and that 10mil is very likely in the close to what he'll get.

Ball Don't Lie 01-06-2014 05:57 PM

I dont know why so many of you have brought up the Pistons. They aren't going to sign Lowry when they just signed Jennings to a new deal, and Lowry wouldnt sign there knowing he'd be coming off of the bench.

Teams that need a starting PG:

New York Knicks
Los Angeles Lakers
Orlando Magic
Milwaukee Bucks

Teams that may need a new starting PG:

Boston Celtics(If they were to trade Rondo, which IMO is very unlikely since they already have enough cap space and picks for their rebuild from the PP/KG trade)

Sacramento Kings(If Isaiah's contract demand is too high)

Chicago Bulls(If Rose isn't going to be ready immediately, but again, Lowry likely wont go to a situation where he isn't guaranteed to start)

Out of those teams, I only see Orlando and Milwaukee as teams that make sense in going after Lowry. Orlando would go after him because he'd be a great fit on both sides of the ball with Oladipo, and ORL isn't planning to make Oladipo their starting PG, they're playing him at PG this year to give him experience handling the ball to make him a better ball handler in the future, but SG is ultimately his position.

Milwaukee will have roughly 8-10 million available, and I'm sure they have come to realize that Knight isnt a starting quality PG, but better as a 6th man scoring guard. They have shown that they give large contracts to veteran players, and with PG being their biggest need, if they don't draft one, I'm sure they'll be in the market for Lowry, Thomas, and Bledsoe.

So really, we don't have a lot of compettition for him. I think Orlando really is our biggest compettitor as he'd be a great fit with them.

Because the Celtics are trading Rondo, Rose is done and will be a shadow of his former self and I thought the Grizz were losing every PG to UFA but that was wrong.

I think Lowry is better than some of the other teams PG mentioned and I could see them upgrading. For example, Pistons.

I don't think ORL is good enough to be signing a UFA and have a couple years of tank in them TBH. Same with MIL. And I don't see Lowry saying yes to either because they just aren't winning.

Both teams, especially Orlando, have a lot of really good young talent, and both have cap room.

Orlando is a lot more attractive as a city obviously, and their core young talent(Oladipo, Harris, Harkless, Vucevic) is better than Milwaukees. Plus they have Afflalo, who is one of the best players at his position. With another lottery pick, and players developing this season with a lot of minutes as mentioned above, they're really only a few veteran players away from being really really good IMO.
