Colangelo's Interview This Morning On FAN590

Didn't hear it myself, but here are some recaps from a couple RealGM posters.

BC On Howard:

- Howard man-handled us, maybe there should have been a few offensive fouls
- Looked to BC like a few of Howards block could have been goaltending
- the team that is the aggressor does usually come out on top in the playoffs(with regards to the refs calls)
- players can get away with a little more physical contact as we saw on the screens yesterday

How the starting line up changed: strategic decision - matchups (vs big team - hedu, rashard, dwight)

Start with defence

Talked about the block shot being momentum changer - Bryan said 2 of the shots close to being goaltends

Talked about Dwight - a beast, manhandled Rasho (Rasho probably tired, not a foul), pushed AP out of bounds (should've maybe been a foul), almost impossible to keep him off the glass in conventional ways

Different officiating in playoffs (ie. NHL) - can't really discuss this but usually the team who's the aggressor comes out of the better end with calls - our team was a little bit soft (1 to 5), we need to pick up the intensity because this is the playoffs, refs have heightened sense of what's going on, Dooling putting his arms around one of our guards

There's nothing we can say to the officiating crew - keep your distance from them - don't find out who the crew before the game is except for Violet Palmer (only female official)

He's on his blackberry a lot during the game because he's taking notes on questionable calls - at the end of the day Bryan will respond re: calls (e.g., 1st quarter, this play, incorrect call) - this gives a basis to have a discussion

TJ Ford and Raptors - Bryan will discuss this issue this summer if Jose and TJ can go forward as a tandem, then he recapped what happened - that Jose starting couldn't work for TJ, will try to work it out this summer if both can play together like last season if not decisions will be made - would rather focus on tomorrow night's game.

Intimidated by the crowd? They had like 16,000 people there with Jiffy pop bags. How are they going to be intimidated by that?

So what do we do here? We need length at the 3. Put Moon back in the lineup - he plays better D than Bargs.

This should have been Andrea's time to shine. Fuck, he's played in situations where people throw pennies and batteries from the stands onto the court, and he couldn't do shit yesterday. I don't think he cares. I think he just views basketball as a hobby. Time to cut losses and ship him out of the off-season. How long are we going to coddle his ass?

+1 HoopsNation for Prime Minister. :clapping:

And keep on driving into the paint.. So what if you get fouled? You want Howard to foul you. They can't win without him.

Ball Don't Lie 04-21-2008 12:50 PM

You dont need to go big to matchup with them, thats what they fucking want you to do so they can exploit the quickness factor.

We should be having Moon or one of our swingmen on Lewis since he went in the post, what, 2 times yesterday? Having him in the post killing their ball movement and trying to score is much better than them getting into the paint every play and either getting a 3 or a Howard off rebound because of rotations.

You cant match big vs big with them because their 'bigs' are so talented, mobile and different.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 04-21-2008 01:12 PM

So Sam puts the bigs on Lewis to prevent him from posting up... he doesn't post anyone up yesterday, scores all his points(but still comfortably below his season averages) from 3 pretty much and you claim that we should go small because he only posted up twice?

There's a reason he only posted up twice... he had a big active body on him all day long!

Come on...i know the hatred for Sam is large around here, but this is an example of a strategic decision he made working and he should receive praise (or at least not be flayed) for it, just like he's roasted for bad decisions.

We scored 100 points in a playoff game which while the offense wasn't exactly flowing isn't that ridiculous. We got killed because our guards couldn't stay infront of their guards and we cheated off their guards on the perimeter too much and they killed us. Sam's no angel but his move to play big on their big three was not a disaster as you and others are making it out to be...those three didnt' kill us, other than Howard on the offensive glass.

Youre acting like Lewis is a Pierce in isolation opportunities. With Lewis trying to post up it takes away from their main offence and slows their halfcourt offence to a halt. Having him on the perimeter is what makes the Magic offence work, you have to put your PF on him because the PF's on opposing teams cant stay with Turkoglu on the perimeter because he can make plays out there, Lewis cant. You take the other teams main big away from the basket and Howard and Turkey have more room to operate, thats what makes them so successful. So yes, I'd rather see Lewis handling it in the post proving he can score down there 1 on 1 then ORL running their pick and roll kick out offence that shredded us in game 1.

Lewis is their #3 scorer, trying to make him their #1 scorer would be a good coaching decision. Just look at what the Sixers did to Rasheed yesterday, they single covered him and it took away Billups and Hamiltons game because they were force feeding him and it killed their offence because their offence relies upon all 5 guys getting involved. THATS coaching, thats why Mo Cheeks is a better coach than Sam Mitchell. Sheed went 5/7 to start, did you see Cheeks go away from the 1 on 1 defence? No. Completely took out #1 and #2 options for Detroit, thats what we need to do, whether its vs Howard or vs Lewis, we have to put them in a position where theyre going to try to exploit a mismatch and itll take away what makes them very good, which is their ball movement.

Superjudge 04-21-2008 01:47 PM

rASHARD lEWIS IS #3 ON THAT TEAM for reason Thriller, don't think for a minute he can't go for 50 on any given night.

Face it, were outgunned, and it ALLLLL starts at #5 baby.

Howard owns this team, he is the complete and absolute WORST match up fr toronto.

I still cannot believ you all wanted this.

hahahahaha

jokes.

Ball Don't Lie 04-21-2008 01:53 PM

Lewis can go for 30, he cant go for 50. He can only go for 50 if we let him get 10 3's which wouldnt happen with one of our swingmen on him, which is the whole point.

And you shouldnt talk about the series if you didnt even watch game 1. Besides a historic 1st qtr due to Smitch's brainfart to start Bargnani at SF we played them very evenly. A game 2 win gives us all the momentum, and even if they dont win and the game is close theyre gonna have a very tough time winning in Toronto IMO.

MangoKidHoops 04-21-2008 01:54 PM

Out of the top 4 teams in the East, Toronto has had the most success against Orlando in the past, so why wouldn't they want this matchup?

I'm sorry, I forgot, In SJ's world, NBA games are sudden-death! ;)

'trane 04-21-2008 01:55 PM

sj - do you really think we match up better against Boston, Detroit or Lebron?

ClingRap 04-21-2008 04:30 PM

i dont think we match up well with any of them, orlando included. if you look at our record against boston, detroit, washington, cleveland, orlando, and atlanta, we either tied the season series, (atlanta) or lost it.
the only team we might statistically match up well against is philly, but they're playing great ball and we're not. so it doesn't really matter who we play. this team looks completely lost on both ends of the court and is incapable of playing consistently for 40+ minutes.
so between the top four teams in the east, i dont think we match up well with any of them. personnel wise or coaching wise. they've got us in every key aspect of the game, statistically and realistically.
if we're lucky we'll win a couple at home. sometimes evergy and adrenaline can get you a couple, but in the end talent and execution will win out, and this team doesn't have it in comparison to orlando

Superjudge 04-21-2008 05:30 PM

I'd rather Lebron, or Detroit.

why the hell do I have to defend my opinion, as it stands, mine is the only one that holds water.

We'll see how the series shakes out.

I'll give ya two reasons why I can't figure out why we wanted them.

1. Dwight coasts for the most part during the season because he's young. You saw what he can do last night.

2. Where our guards tend to be better on the pick and roll is obvious, but anyone paying attention has seen how Orlando's guards, when it has counted, have always been able to get thier open looks at the three point shout. I've seen a few games now where Nelson put wide open daggers into the Raps.

fuck it, I'll give you two more. Hedo and Rashard.

Please, answer back....... Hedo and Rashard = ????? and ?????? on the Toronto team???

Exactly.

Say what you want, Orlando is where they are for a reason. Aside from a strange collapse last year, they were good then too. You all wanted Orlando, I, Did not.

Sorry I feel this way. I ain't saying they can beat Cleveland or Detroit.

I guess im saying, they can't beat any of them.

I can't wait to see Orlando in the next round.

It will be interesting to se how Superman reacts to the heightened spotlight.

'trane 04-21-2008 07:37 PM

if your point is that we couldn't beat any of them, I agree, but at least we have a record of showing up against Orlando. Detroit hurts us badly every time, Boston is an impossibility, and Lebron would moonwalk past our perimeter 'D' in his sleep. At least Orlando lives and dies by the 3. That gives us the only fighting chance we could possibly have in this series.

What?

Cleveland would whip our ass, no need to explain why, we beat them once out of four, by 9

Detroit, once again, no need to explain, we beat them once out of four games, and that game we won was by 7. Excluding stats, we all know by common sense they'd eat the Raps alive.

We all need to calm down here, it's only the first game, that's always the hardest, there's a reason for more than 1 game series in the NBA, so after a loss the coaches can discuss what went wrong and how to stop it. I'm not guaranteeing a win tomorrow, by I could guarantee a better game than Sunday's.

Superjudge 04-21-2008 11:43 PM

why do I need to calm down?

I'm calm as hell.

I have no illusions, I called Orlando in 6, and I was being a homer when I did it.

Ball Don't Lie 04-22-2008 12:55 AM

Cleveland and Detroit would have beat us in 5 at most. At least vs ORL we're guaranteed a fun high scoring series that we can win a couple games(and compettitive) in most likely.

Acie 04-22-2008 08:07 AM

Maybe the Raps of late December and early January could've made this a fun series and at best stretched it out to 6 or 7 games, but these clowns are done in four. :)

Superjudge 04-22-2008 08:21 AM

Yep.

This team looks horrid.

But I mean what do you want.

The point guard thing destroyed them.

The disappearing act of almost every guards shooting stroke.

Bargnani's body breaking down on an epic level (I'm sure you all know everything he's gone through)

And lastly, our "All star", who lets face it, is a dweeb, and soft as Cottonelle, spends more time on his comuter making Youtube video's than he does pumping the iron he needs to at least be strong enough to maybe act like he ain't a bitch.

This team earned tier two Home playoff appearances before the allstar break. Everything after has been an embarrasment.
