Exclamation Colangelo will represent the Raps at the draft lottery

Quote:
Via email, Colangelo said there has been no change in his contractual status, but he confirmed that he will represent the Raptors at Tuesday’s draft lottery in New Jersey.

Richard Peddie, MLSE president and chief executive officer, did not return a phone call made to him Wednesday afternoon.
Quote:
With the draft process ramping up after Tuesday’s lottery, it would behoove the Raptors to make a decision on Colangelo sooner rather than later. Sure, there is precedent of a team firing a general manager on draft day, as the Portland Trail Blazers let Kevin Pritchard go last year after he ran the draft for Portland. But that move was widely derided as amateurish. Plus, Portland, with stable ownership and a history of winning, has a lot more going for it than Toronto does as a basketball market.

The Raptors could let Colangelo go and hand over the draft to team advisor Wayne Embry, then go into the presumed lockout without a full-time GM in charge, as was reported last month. Once more, that would not result in the best league-wide optics. And given that the Raptors will select between first and sixth overall in the draft, you want somebody with a specific organizational vision making that pick.

Raptors’ vice president and assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini will also be without contract after June 30. It is quite possible Gherardini will want a new challenge after five years under Colangelo. Regardless, Gherardini is one of the most powerful men in European basketball, someone you do not want to unnecessarily agitate.

Colangelo’s résumé is far from a perfect one, and the Raptors would not be unjust in letting him go. His merits and detractions have been debated for the better part of this year. But set him free or lock him up, and be firm with the decision.

That, however, is a basketball decision. Right now, it appears there is business to tend to.

I'm actually surprised Colangelo hasn't told MLSE to fuck off. The season has been over for a month and not even any word on when this might get resolved one way or the other. I guess they're waiting to see if a sale could be done before hand, but still. What a mess!

A week from now we'll know where we stand in the draft and then hopefully a deal or two can be made leading into the draft, especially if they know who they want at that position.

Well you're surprised because you have zero clue whatsoever what is happening, or what has been discussed. Nobody does.

Isn't draft day before his contract expires? Maybe they want to see how he handles his possible last move, see who he picks and decide from there?

How come no talk about Gherardini on this forum? I didn't know his contract expires.. no one cares about him leaving?

There's a reason for that. If that shrimp replaces BC i'll be greatly disapointed and depressed!

Huh? Why?

A well-connected, intelligent person in charge of your basketball operations.

How would that be a bad thing? Wasn't there talk of that's why he was brought in, in the first place? To be the eventual replacement of Colangelo?

Personally, I think keeping Gheradini is pretty important.

i'm not surpised you think that, but you must understand that as much as the situation is a bit let's say uncertain, Colangelo is still a representative of the team and by all accounts wants to remain an employee of the team. It's obviously in his best interest to remain professional and respectful.

Bargnani will be a lifer here, and we'll be even more euro...........ok maybe not, but i don't want him as our GM. And where was it said he was brought here to eventually replace Colangelo? That certainly would never have been brought up by anyone with the team.

I understand all of that, and considering MLSE might be sold i suppose he's probably been told his contract situation won't be resolved until that is, one way or the other and there's an understanding. But still, he must be frustrated. Plus it looks awful if we go to the draft with a GM who's contract expires days later. I would have to think that it would come out before that, you'd hope.

I remember reading that when Gheradini was first brought in.

As for the euro comment.....really?

riiight. because Gherardini has the determining force keeping Bargnani here all this time. Quit pulling stuff out of thin air.

I like how the article makes Maurizio out to be a little dangerous. You don't want to agitate him. He has all those connections in Europe. It makes it a little exciting.

What am i talking about? You started scoffing about how Bargnani can't possibly be traded ever if Gherardini was calling the shots based on the assumption that they are both Italians thus clearly inseperable.

Meanwhile it's been Colangelo all along who has been the biggest Bargnani defender and appologist. The same Colangelo that you so vehemently defend to no end and assume is head and shoulders above anyone else to be the GM here. Simply put you are very reactionary and always throw out these unthought tirades about this and that. Like nothing has even happened yet, yet MG is some stupid 'shrimp' and our next GM and Bargnani is a 'lifer' and the Raptors are doomed.

Yeah, and Gherardini had nothing to do with Bargnani being drafted and has neeeever defended him. Come on... Sorry, but i believe if he's taking over there's even less chance of Bargnani being traded.

I don't know. Maybe. maybe not. Personally i don't nesesarilly think the best move is to trade Bargnani (yes i know he kinda sucks and he had a bad year). I wouldn't trade him just to be rid of him.

There's just so much up in the air right now, that to tell the truth i don't even like to think too much about this team. A good amount of indifference has set in whenever i do think about this team.

"a move widely derided as amateurish"

I wonder how many moves this organization has made over the years that are perfectly encapsulated by that statement.

This pathetic situation is just another in a long line of head scratching stupidity coming out of MLSE. Meanwhile the championship drought continues for the forseeable future.

Board Member A - Hmm. We lost a lot of games this year. I'm not sure this Jerry Colangelo guy knows what he's doing. I mean we had a lot of empty seats this year. That can't be good for the bottom line

Board Member B - Umm, I think Jerry is the father. I think his name is Brad? No...it's on the tip of my tongue...Brian. That's it.

Board Member A - Whatever. We need this team to perform better. We made WAY more money with the Leafs last year and they haven't made the playoffs in a decade. Why isn't this Colangelo person bringing people into the building

Board Member C - I agree. We need new blood. Hey you...Ya the accountant. Who do you think should run this basketball team

Board Member D - Well, I know this guy I went to school with. He played basketball and I remember he was pretty good when we played pick up. I bet he'd do a great job and he has a masters in Economics and Marketing so I bet he'll have some great ideas to increase the bottom line.
