Last season a lot of teams already did some trades in order to save money and this
scenario will also continue this season. We will probably see some teams which don’t have any chance to make the playoffs try to trade their expensive players and acquire exipiring contracts. So this is a great possibilty for strong teams to make their team even better or for teams which are searching for the missing piece to find it ! One of these teams are the Toronto Raptors. Let’s take a look at their current situation...

Before the night of the 8th July, the general manager of the Toronto Raptors, Bryan Colangelo, was searching a way to create a situation where the Raptors could sign free agent Hedo Turkoglu without falling under the cap space limit because this would take them away the possibility to use their midlevel exception which is only available for teams which are over the cap. At this time the Raptors were something like ten million under the cap which would be enough to sign Hedo and the rest of the roster would have to be filled out with players that would have signed for the minimum league exception. This would put the Raptors in a bad situation because they need some better bench players and with the minimum league exception you can’t sign rotation players which have a nice impact unless you’re very lucky.

Things were really complicated till yesterday because the Raptors couldn’t sign Hedo Turkoglu without having to re-sign free agent Shawn Marion or renounce the rights to Marion. The problem with re-signing Shawn Marion is that he would put the Raptors just under the cap, so that they wouldn’t have enough caproom to sign Hedo Turkoglu. As you can see Colangelo had to choose between Marion and Turkoglu.

At the night of the 8th July Bryan Colangelo showed why he’s known as one of the best general managers in the NBA ! Let’s take a look at the moves he did :

1. The Raptors sent small forward Shawn Marion and Power Foward Kris Humphries to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks sent Shooting Guard Antoine Wright, Small Foward Devin George and Small Foward Jerry Stackhouse to the Toronto Raptors

2. The Raptors sent small forward Jerry Stackhouse, shooting guard Quincy Douby and cash to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Raptors received a trade exception in this trade.

3. The Raptors acquired small forward Hedo Turkoglu and use their trade exception to go over the cap while the Magic receive a trade exception because they just sent Hedo to the Raptors without taking players back.

This trade makes sense for everybody because the Mavericks finally receive a great rebounder and someone who can run the fastbreak with Jason Kidd. The Grizzlies received some cash back which they will use to waive Jerry Stackhouse. The Magic received a large trade exception which they can use to sign free agents because they are already over the cap and are looking to acquire some bench players.

With all those complicated moves the Toronto Raptors received two wing players, something that they were looking for and they are finally over the cap, so that they can use their midlevel exception to sign more free agents, probably wing players or fowards.

A lot of changes are happening in Toronto and like the raps fan like to say : " In Colangelo we believe "

Following how this trade developed and was reported on I feel like witnessing my first Raptors victory since supporting. (Hedo bandwagon)

Colangelo MVP!

This is the type of deal that cements BC reputation as one of the best GM's out there.

Not only does he have to be a savvy businessman to pull something like this off, he also has to have great relationships with all the GMs involved, because in a sense they're all helping each other out. I don't care how good a general manager BC is, if Mark Cuban, Chris Wallace and Otis Smith didn't like him, this deal never would have happened.

George was a throw-in, I don't think BC wasted any energy targeting him.

Delfino doesn't even cut into the MLE I believe (correct me if I'm wrong)

ClingRap 07-09-2009 09:31 AM

delfino does not cut in. we can sign him outright because we have his bird rights

n30tokyo 07-09-2009 09:38 AM

i'm glad he can breathe easier, get a bit more sleep :yeah:

It's incredible - the Raptors go from what looked to be a team that was 5 deep to a team that could potentially have one of the better benches in the Eastern Conference.

All i wanted was a 9-10 deep team. And it looks like easily a 10 Deep team. With the 11-14 guys being George/Ukic/POB/Pops

Did we not have to renounce him by july 8th 12am?

No. Look at Marion for example, same situation. They only had to renounce IF Turk was brought in as FA, which was obviously plan B if not C or D. No matter, cause plan A worked.

Formless 07-09-2009 09:58 AM

:yeah::yeah::yeah:
These are the types of moves that I expected from BC this offseason.
