Colangelo: Valanciunas bigger physically

Quote:

Colangelo and executive vice-president of basketball operations Ed Stefanski watched Valanciunas put up a strong outing against Bennetton Treviso (17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks by his count) and saw him go through a spirited practice, despite being tired.

“He had a spectacular game when we were there and also a very solid practice. They had just come in from playing a game in the Czech Republic,” he said.

Getting face time with Valanciunas — a dinner, a chance to discuss what needs to be worked on and what to expect as the summer approaches — made for “an extremely positive trip.”

Colangelo said Valanciunas, selected fifth overall by the club, has “gotten a little bit bigger physically” and “a little more fluid inside.”

Good to hear. Can't wait till next year.

Carlos Danger 02-01-2012 11:45 PM

great news.

A silver lining in this season for us. With Valanciunas developing well, a top pick in the draft, Bargnani playing in 12-13 like he is now, and Derozan coming back around, we could be a surprise next season.

Can't wait until this summer. Should be an interesting time in RaptorLand.

BTW, does anyone know when Valanciunas obligations in Europe are done. Will he be able to train in Toronto in the summer, play summer league?

Olympics end at 12th of August and he's good to go.

BC said that Raps have nothing against of LK and JV playing for the national team, that means they will be in the training camp after Olympics, that is if Lithuania will pass the qualifying tournament

I know I didn't disagree with you, I'm just saying that it is not a fact that they will play in the Olympics yet, because they have to pass the qualyfing turnament

I'm not that easy.

Its funny how everyone is expecting that JV will be a difference maker next year. It usually takes a couple of years for any big man to start being good in NBA. I've seen Jonas play and I think he has the talent, but I dont think he will be great from the start. With any luck he is starting big material by end of next season, but it might take longer.

And Im not saying he wont be a great player in few years. Just that during his rookie year he is more likely to be a big body on the floor that fouls a lot. I just hope he has better grip on the ball than ED so he can score when he gets the ball down low instead of getting stripped 9/10 times.

Agreed. I'll say he averages 6 and 7 in his rookie season. It's the years that follow that will start to be difference makers. His first season will just be so he can get his feet wet.

Yep, that's realistic thinking.
People who are saying how good raptors will be next season with JV are just lying to themselves. He needs time, practice in the NBA and he might get better. Now all he got is his height and talent.

I just realised, if Casey managed to get someone who looked like he despised defence to play it pretty good, imagine what he could do for an already defensive minded player.
