Colangelo: The team is in position to give Barbosa a multi-year deal this summer

After Leandro Barbosa stated that he might opt out of the final season in his contract, Raptors General Manager Bryan Colangelo said that the team is in his position to give the guard a multi-year deal this summer.
Barbosa probably isn't worth the $7.6 million salary that he's scheduled to collect next season, but Colangelo called him "one of my favorite players" and it's possible that he might be back on a multi-year deal next year. However, his most prolific days may be behind him, and it's also a realistic scenario that Barbosa winds up overseas in the face of a potential lockout.

man BC but not give him a multi-year deal, myself, along with many others want him off this team.. players with Barbosa's skill set should be on contending teams, not rebuilding ones.. :sigh:

Colangelo willing to give Barbosa a long term deal

:confused2:

It's french and it loses a little with google translate. But since i'm french, he says that if Barbosa opts out, the Raptors would still be in a position to offer him a long term deal.

To return to the Raptors, what happens there with Leandro Barbosa?

I know he intends to test the free agent market or eventually return to Brazil. For now, I do not know of any that I have not yet had his agent. But at the same time, he tests the market, there will still be in a position to sign over several years. Anyway, it's one of my favorite players.

I like Barbosa and even i think it's a bad idea.

LX 06-13-2011 10:59 AM

I'm thinking BC was just being careful not to throw him under the bus.

Superjudge 06-13-2011 11:08 AM

Barbosa is a good player man, nothing wrong with him.

a black hole on a young team is a bad thing. he's a good player, but he's a black hole. all he does is take shots away from our young guys.

Psi 06-13-2011 11:20 AM

Opt out of 7.6 for 12 mil over 3 years.
I'd take that.
He'd also be a rather useful trade piece at that value.
Not sure if he'd accept it though.

Bankiz 06-13-2011 11:21 AM

rather propose him a siogn and trade to a contender, and bring us some young to rebuild properly !
even if i like him !

bjjs 06-13-2011 11:24 AM

He has a nice repore with derozan and he can be a potent offensive weapon off of the bench, I would consider keeping him if he can be had for cheap.

As long as Barbosa and his teammates and coaches understand that he absolutely cannot be trusted with the ball in his hands over and over again, that he can turn the ball over at moments when the ball absolutely should not be turned-over, then the Barbs can be controlled.

how is that a bad thing for us?
if contender wants him we will trade him for something useful
and I seriously doubt BC has another tanking season in sights which Barbosa might ruin

We need atleast 1 VET on this team...Barbosa could be that person

we need a vet that can facilitate, that can teach, and that can defer when necessary. barbosa may be a nice guy in the locker room, but he is none of those things we need. he proved that by going 1 on 5 all year long.

DDUnreal 06-13-2011 11:40 AM

Yep Love him but don't need him

INSIDER 06-13-2011 11:44 AM

i call it BS.
BC wants everyone to think we're all about keeping Barbosa and that his wrist is 100%. He doesnt want any team pulling away their interest because they are afraid his wrist is gonna be problematic. if barbosa decides to stay this final season, he'll be traded away in a heartbeat.

it doesn't really bother me that much, he can come off the bench and put in some work...
we were 22-60... at this point it doesn't matter, we need all the help we can get

Chiggmo 06-13-2011 01:46 PM

No thanks.

creative1mm 06-13-2011 02:30 PM

do you think it's a strategy.. sign him and then use him in a trade?

Ligeia 06-13-2011 02:32 PM

No team really needs a vet. Every team needs a leader. Barbosa may be a veteran but he does not appear to be a leader of men. I also hate watching his tunnel vision over and over again.

Don Vito 06-13-2011 05:00 PM

Barbosa is awesome, I'd hate to see him go.
