Colangelo talks about the PG position

Quote:

“Guard play is clearly one of the true focal points of successful teams, and point guard in particular,” Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo tells HOOPSWORLD. “When you’ve got a guy who can run a team and push the ball and get a team into their offense, but be a coach on the floor, it’s clearly the head of the snake if you will. We’ve got two very solid guards that are competing right now against each other and for us and as we continue to evaluate where they are. You’ve got guys at different points of their career, obviously. Jose comes in with a lot more experience, many more point guard instincts are in play. He’s had success at this level, but also on the international level, so he’s the incumbent walking in. Jerryd obviously is more of a scoring point guard, or a scoring guard that is still learning certain aspects of point guard play and decision making and I think sometimes you might even see him play a little bit tentative because he’s trying to feel both out. There’s no doubt that he can go in and score very quickly and put points up on the board but he’s being asked to make better decisions and be more of a point guard and he kind of finds himself in between sometimes but love his talent, love his work ethic, love his focus, love his athleticism, his strength, love his ability to defend the ball, so he’s got a chance. He’s got a chance to be that guy for us in the future, and again it’s nice to kind of have a coach who can relate to him and talk to him everyday and continue to motivate him. But as we move forward are we still looking for that point guard of the future? Yeah, I think that’s something that we’ve got to be discussing. Whether or not Jerryd’s that guy is still an unknown, but we’re not ruling it out.”

I am pretty sure that we will be trading Bayless + for someone + draft picks.

2012 draft we get a PG and Jose will become our backup, I think that is the most likely process. So I doubt that Jose will be amnestied

DDUnreal 01-04-2012 09:22 PM

I hope that's the goal. As many picks as possible this year!

agreed - one way or another they need to do something in the draft

as for Jose, he looks pretty tradable right now. I just don't see keeping him as a backup at that price.

It would be an expiring price and he comes off the books after that. So much can happen in the next 8 months, we'll see.

A healthy Jose right now is playing like a top-10 PG in the league. Remove him (no matter whether Bayless or Carter take his minutes) and this team is done. Finito. Presto finito.

So, if 3-3 record is bothering you - trade Jose Calderon. IMHO, he should finish his contract with the team, sign a much cheaper one to be a backup to a player that actually has a chance to be a PG of the future and finish his career as a Raptor. In fact, I'd love to have The Ocho retired here in TO after he is done.

i totally agree Mike. Jose Calderon is as true a toronto Raptor as they come. Like it or hate it, it is the truth. I've always agreed with guys like you, SJ, rudyT and anyone else (maybe Bel) that has preached that Jose has always been a good player who would sometimes look worse due to injuries or overall shitty team direction. Jose is awesome. He will always be awesome.

I would like him to end his career in T.O, if anything bring in a young talented pg and have Jose mentor him..

but caldy is better then allot of guards out there

Dario 01-05-2012 02:46 AM

yeah Caldy's most likely to end his career in TDOT, if not, I could see him going to Europe and playing.

Right on, this team would be an absolute MESS without JC, he's finaly healthy and playing at a high level, similar to his days in 06-07 and 07-08.

If our teams relying on Calderon and his performances (distributing the ball) im a little worried, but we'll see how it plays out, I know hes got it in him, he has to be consistence, I wanna see him averaging a double double every game.

it's not easy averaging a double double ya know..

though jose almost did it last year. what was he, 10ppg and 8.5 apg? pretty fooking amazing for a dude getting payed 10 mil a year if you ask me.

Windex 01-05-2012 03:53 AM

looking for a future sexy PG :cookie:

Admiral 01-05-2012 08:51 AM

Jose's a Raptor for life, or at least till he's old and his skills are packaged in a trade, but for the useful part of his career he will be a Raptor. Let's hope for a good PG pick up in the off-season, whether drafted, signed, or traded for and Jose becomes the backup. At this point Jose's been playing good so if the guy coming in can start over him it'll mean an all-star caliber PG.

Also means bayless as a trade asset!

Ataf 01-05-2012 11:03 AM

Yay I'm not the only one who wants Calderon to finish his carrer as a raptor :yeah:

Lots of positive feedback with Calderon. No one ever questioned his decision making and running the team's offense. His poor defense can be hidden a bit with a Coach who can actually plan and execute team defense. However, its only six games into the season. The other main question with Jose has been his durability. Jose would be a great mentor for a new point guard and play as back-up to wind down his career a Raptor.

carp 01-05-2012 11:25 AM

Calderon is a good starting PG... it's his health that's a concern. I just don't understand the rush to replace him when our SF position is so barren. JJ is a solid energy guy with some fantastic defensive skills but he's pretty brutal on offence despite being a scoring machine in college. Kleiza is a decent scorer, but again not an ideal starting SF for this team, which needs a solid two way fit.

Obviously a harrison barnes would be the ideal fit in terms of draft, but unlikely that we get our choice given he's the only legitimate SF in the top 10. I definitely think we'll see a trade....

JV, AB, new SF, DD, Jose is actually a solid young starting 5......

His defence has been fine. Not sure which games youre watching.

MikeToronto 01-05-2012 11:29 AM

In an ideal world, where we actually get a high enough draft pick this summer, we'd get a franchise-caliber player at either SF or one of the guard positions. If it's a SF or a SG, Jose will be running this team for a while.

Alex 01-05-2012 11:33 AM

Jose can be the first retired Raptor jersey :reporter:
