young talent building like this is a fairly new thing imo. look at OKC and how many championships they will win and before portland was riddled with injury they were on the same boat, PHX couple years did well through building from the draft as well and made it to the conference finals. Lakers Drafted bynum and Bryant, to key peices at there respective times that made impacts on how many championships they won.

just cause u cant name em, doesnt mean it cant happen...

That's nitpicking. It's pretty much the same as drafting him.

at the time, did anyone else realize the potential bryant held? because he went 18 i believe and thats the only reason i can think of for teams passing up on the next sg to dominate the league for 2 decades

You answered your own question. GMs did not want to draft someone from high school into a league with the big boys.

Whoops I misread your post.

LeBron was special though. He was named All-USA First team for 3 consecutive years, including when he was in Grade 10. He also appeared NBA-ready with his tall and muscular body.

Not sure what your question is, but given that Bryant was drafted a full 7 years before James, Bryant's successful transition into the NBA made teams take chances on high school players a lot more. You have to also remember that there weren't many HS players coming out back in the 1990s, so teams were selecting older, more developed college players. It was until 2001 when HS players started entering the League in large numbers.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 1996 Draft was loaded with talent, including Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Marcus Camby, Stephon Marbury, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and Antoine Walker - all who were more proven than Bryant and had outstanding college resumes.

He went 13th.

As Northern pointed out, the top 6 was stacked. New jersey also made a decent pick with Kittles, who could have been an all-star if he didn't get slowed down so much by injuries. So, given that they didn't have the advantage of hindsight, those 7 teams made decent picks. The other 5 teams went with size. It's hard to find quality size. Teams are often forced to use the draft to get it, although it's always a gamble. They gambled on size instead of the high schooler. Wrong horse.

Detroit

Stated that they are willing to trade #8 pick with Rips contract if they get serviceable player(s) in return
In my mind Bargnani or Calderon are serviceable. And two years of Rip teaching Demar is not horrible

If You ever want to win, the only way there is for the Raptors is through draft. Forget the Toronto not being atractive enough for US players, yes it is posible to buy it with 90mil payrolls as we have seen it in Dallas way, but with MLSE being the biggest shareholders, where they just look to make profit? NO! And dont think/hope that alot will change after new collective, couse i can tell You those Nets/Lakers/Celtics/Mavs... owners will gladly pay for their championships, it might be a bit toned down but nowhere near fair level for everyone.
You just need to build assets and strike once on a lottery and the way BC has been picking lately, Raps are 1 big impact player from the win now mode. (after this draft year ofc)
