Colangelo passed on a trade to land Iguodala

Wonder wtf they wanted? :dead:

According to Colangelo the #Raptors passed on potential opportunity to trade for Andre Iguodala. Said it wasn't the right fit/too big a risk

BC on Iggy: (Cont) "given the circumstances and the pieces that needed to go in and out... It was too much risk" #Raptors

Also, here's an interview he did on TSN radio this morning and a recap via RealGm poster:

Quote:

Briefly speaks about Ed Stefanski, happy to have him as part of the team, and his experience. Brings up Coach Casey, and the importance of bringing in a different culture, taking basically the same roster from two years ago, and changing the defensive culture and overall team atmosphere virtually overnight.

On Valanciunas: Impressive young man. Spoke with him about his arrival in Toronto (coming next week) He's very smart and matter-of-fact, but has a lot of energy. Shy at first, but will surprise people. Lithuania's Olympic team used him in the way they best thought would help them win right now. Sabonnis says he's the future of Lithuanian basketball.

BC was disappointed with JV's limited Olympic role, but still with limited minutes, showed an understanding of the game, and an ability to change the pace of the game. He came out, played hard, blocked shots, etc. Wants to temper NBA expectations so he learns to play the right way, the nuances (foul trouble, etc.) but they love everything about him.

On Terrence Ross: Athletic versatile wing, great effort being given in practice with DeRozan, going back and forth with each other. A lot of expectations too, but he's excited. Going to be a good two-way player with add to the versatility on the floor

On Calderon: Not going to decide who starts, but says Lowry will make it tough on Casey to not start him. Jose is very professional, a great person, and if he stays, will benefit the team one way or another. Thinks he'll understand if he has to be a backup and will do his best within that capacity.

On Lowry: Brings grittiness and toughness, and that represents the direction we're heading, and the future of the PG position for the Raptors

On Bargnani: Thinks Casey brought out the most of him, has versatility, and is coming into his own as a big in the league. Wanted to get healthy so avoided Italian team commitments.

Lots of competition within the team across the board. It's a young, developing team. Maybe failed to make the sexy move this offseason, but thinks they eventually made the right moves, the right way. Being patient. Had chances to make some deals, and might make a few more (mentions Jose) Had means to make a big deal, (mentioned Iguodala specifically) but thought it was too great a risk (us sending out young assets and future assets, and AI's contract terms). Might still make a deal, but has to be the right move for now and the future.

Wow I am really surprised. I would like to know what Philly wanted because unless it was Val anyone else should be available.

They probably wanted Derozan + Bargnani or something like that. I would offer them Derozan, Davis or Amir (whichever they want), Calderon. But i wouldn't give them both Derozan/Bargnani for a guy that doesn't score. We'd be great defensively, sure but our offense would be pathetic!

Lowry
Fields
Iguodala
Davis or Amir
Valanciunas

^ Not enough scoring. We'd lose a lot of 94-89 games. Now maybe they insisted on Valanciunas which i would have to say is probably a non starter.

fancylad 09-11-2012 10:40 AM

well obviously this whole thing depends on who Philly was asking for. I'm thinking it wasn't a very favorable trade based on the comments.

Would be nice to see a team with no player whose weak defensively.

I think the contract issues with AI would be a non-starter. An asset or 2 would be given up just to see AI leave in the summer of 2013 (or the summer of 2014).

The fact that AI could bolt next summer was probably the riskiest part of the whole deal. If we give up Derozan + another solid piece and then he leaves in FA next summer we'd be screwed.

Now i doubt he'd leave next summer since i think he's owed 15mil(ish) for the 2013-14 season so i doubt he'd pass on his PO. But then the following season would be all about the speculation and we might have to deal him at the deadline if he won't commit (and we all know how that usually goes here).

exactly, that's why I originally said in the summer (aka 2013), or next summer(2014).

jeffb 09-11-2012 11:10 AM

Lets just say they were asking for Bargnani/Derozan. And trading within the division you'd have to think that what they were asking had to be somewhere in that range.

Bargnani/Derozan = 36ppg (give or take)

Iguodala = 12ppg (would probably be 15-16ppg here)

We would get killed on a nightly basis, i don't care what kind of defense we'd have. Obviously they didn't want Calderon, because if they did a deal could have easily been done. Jose, Derozan, Davis for Iguodala + filler?

Lowry/Lucas?
Fields/Ross
Iggy/Kleiza
Bargs/Amir
Vala/Gray

jeffb 09-11-2012 11:27 AM

I'm really praying Memphis stumbles this season and they feel compelled to trade Gay and we swoop in to grab him. Highly doubtful but i really hope he's a player that BC still has his eye on. I also hope we have our eye on Monta Ellis for next summer. Trade for Gay (include DD), sign Ellis.

I expected more to be done via the trade route at this point, but really BC has until next offseason to get just the right deal done. I would have loved Iguodala, but they would have needed to know that he could be signed to a new deal. It's a little odd that BC mentioned it at all. I do really worry about so much talk now of possible moves, and how everyone is traceable, and yet so far only Gary Forbes has gone the other way (in a great deal of course, but leaving plenty of trade assets left over).

I think his patience may have been a good thing.... dealing Forbes in a deal where any value is actually attributed to him was a very commendable effort. Fans love to sell low but I think Colangelo and Stefanski had the patience to not do so.

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 09-11-2012 12:49 PM

Seems to me they had to ask for Bargnani.

They took Bynum. They wanted one big time player (argue all you want but Bargs is the best player on the raptors). They don't need 4 average peices. They want to complete now. That rules Joval out. Nobody else fits.

And I would say no to, for a one year rental that makes a poor to average raptors team.

moremilk 09-11-2012 01:24 PM

pretty safe to say they wanted andrea, since they need a PF, it the trade was andrea + ross for AI, that makes little sense since we'd lose lowry as well

however, if the trade for for demar and ed, he's crazy not to do it.

Luckedout 09-11-2012 03:03 PM

im surprised he mentioned this. so would this have put us in the dwight howard trade? or was this trade proposed before philly knew they were going to get bynum? i wonder.

I think it was separate. We were rumored to be talking to them about Iguodala around the draft if i'm not mistaken.
