Raptors Colangelo discussing the draft and getting #5

BC needs a new cell phone.

Says our biggest weakness is the 5, but doesn't sound like he wants to address that through the draft.

Thoughts?

Not much diff between 3 and 5, you still get walker/knight/banter just not first dibs.

+1

For me a 1 or 3 in the draft is important. I want a Center with experience to be brought in through FA or a trade.

Since Williams iis pretty much going 1st or 2nd...that leaves us with Leonard or Hamilton to draft if going for a 3 and Knight or Walker at 1...hmmm

some good points - whether 3, 4 or 5, we're looking at the same bunch of guys. there are a couple of decent options and everything is a crapshoot. 5 is cheaper than 3, so you have a bit more money under the cap (although the number is pretty small).

it sounded like they've been planning all along that obtaining a big is the number one mission. so i suppose that by saying the draft is short on bigs that can contribute soon, he is also saying that they are open to moving the pick if the right guy came along.

lots of politics there, but outside of the low probability of moving up, anywhere you can end up is not going to yield a difference-maker. might as well say that the shit you have doesn't smell much worse than the shit you might have had, if indeed that's true.

trade it.

if we some how land Brandon Knight it would be a successful draft,

if we don't get Kanter or Knight, i would prefer to trade the pick for steph curry, do something like that

But he just said yesterday that the plan was to stick with the pick and not trade it. Being completely open to trading it all of a sudden would make me wonder why he would have said such a thing to begin with.

to be clear he did not openly say they are looking at trading it. i made that point based on 2 comments - that getting a big is a priority and that there are no impact bigs in this draft.

and yesterday there was still a chance at #1 and #2. now it's certain that it is 5. that clearly changes the dynamic.

Drafting a big most times means years of training and adapting. It takes a lot longer for a big to be effective in the NBA then most other positions. Thats why trading for a big is crucial.
As well we need a young fast PG. I am sure that is draftable.

Couldn't agree more. Kanter for example is 18 and hasn't played in over a year. Colangelo who's on a two year contract isn't drafting him imo. The way he talked last night, I can't see him getting a Center in the draft.

don't we already have a young, fast pg with indeterminate upside?

and if we can't get a c in the draft, we might very well be able to use the #5 to get a big another way.

It would be nice if we waited until all the combine shit, and all the workouts before we start predicting who's getting picked.

Nobody has any idea.

Lets put it this way, if Kanter is healthy as n Ox, he may go #1. It isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Or he can go in round 2.

You just have no idea yet.

Obviously. Atleast then we when his contract expires he can go to another team when he finally gets a clue & starts playing.
