Raptors Coaching staff candidates

Not sure if this is one of the articles already posted...

Quote:
League sources say the Raptors have already conducted initial interviews with assistant coach hopefuls Nick Nurse of the Rio Grande Vipers of the D League, former Raptor and current Brooklyn assistant Popeye Jones and ex-NBAer Tyronn Lue. Whether those three have to be re-interviewed once Ujiri is on the job full-time remains to be seen but the future of the current staff is cloudier than it’s ever been. None have contracts guaranteed past the end of June and it’s expected none will be in town this week when some players come back for workout sessions with members of the team’s training staff.

Read that the nets may hire Brian shaw. If we fire Casey I really hope we get him and brooklyn doesn't.

Bring Popeye Jones home

but if the Raps did hire him 50% of the media's questions would be about his son and hockey

Yeah, since 90% of the media are puckheads. Even today, that douchebag Gord Stellick asking Ujiri a question had to reference Brian Burke and his situation. Like Ujiri gives a fuck.

Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 3m

New Raptors front-office boss Masai Ujiri, I'm told, is making hard push to hire Jeff Weltman away from Milwaukee

It's the wrong thread to discuss it, but since it's mentioned here, I think that supposed Weltman hiring could be a good one, if it happens. Although Milwaukee has been mediocre at best in recent years, they have drafted some decent young players outside the top 10. And Weltman's strengths are supposedly in scouting and player evaluation. Tobias Harris at 19th (the Bucks told Charlotte who to pick since they were making a trade), Larry Sanders at 15th, and John Henson at 14th.

They've also been pretty amazing at drafting second round talent.

the bucks were horrible at drafting until the past 3 years when they suddenly became great. So it can't be the GM's hand in this, not sure if it's this guy, but if he is, very impressed with their recent record. And given their limited funds, I would be shocked if we don't get him ... Must be nice to be rich

This is as good a reason to keep DC and augment his staff to get the desired results/direction.

The champions have spoken.

Quote:
"We see it differently, the San Antonio organization and the Miami Heat organization," Spoelstra said. "[For] true success in the NBA, you must have consistency of culture. When you see that type of turnover over and over and over, it's impossible to create any kind of sustainable consistent culture. And we don't see it as a coincidence. We've had the same leadership in our organization now for 18 years. [Owner] Micky Arison took over, put [president] Pat [Riley] in charge. Even though we have had four different coaches, myself, Pat, Ronny [Rothstein] and Stan [Van Gundy], it still has been the same culture and relatively the same philosophy.

"San Antonio has been the same way for 15 years with Pop in charge. We don't see it as coincidence.

"I think it's really a shame for the profession of coaching that it's been so volatile.

Do you really think Casey is capable of establishing a championship-like culture in this club? I have a lot more faith in Leiweke and Ujiri, than I have in DC.

And this seems a bit like Spo trying to cover his own burning arse.

Obviously it's key to have stability with management if you want to build a winner, but we shouldn't just keep him around to have that stability when he's proven to be a bad coach thus far. Until he proves that he can make good rotations, adjustments, create a better defensive system, and come up with better offensive sets than our guards continuing to shoot long 2's every play, I'm for all for getting rid of him and getting a proven coach.

What's odd is he did a better job at that stuff his first season here.

That's just a dumb conclusion. Casey has proven nothing as a head coach and to suggest he stays in the name of stability is absurd. Culture and stability will come from TL and MU and Casey will be long gone when this thing turns around, and the sooner the better.

I think you inadvertently brought up a good point, more so than coaches those 2 teams mentioned, the Heat and Spurs, have had very stable ownership and front office personnel for a long time. They established their culture from the very top on down, they drafted accordingly and well (the Spurs late pics seem to find gems) then insert coaches. Spo is a product of Arison and Riley and having HOF to all star to great players to work with. Sam with Pop.

Those 2 organizations are ones to emulate.
