Default Coaching Candidates

Since its safe to say that most of you guys don't approve of Mitchell, and neither do I, lets take a look at some coaches that can achieve more.

Tom Thibodeau, Boston
The Celtics' defensive guru was a head-coaching candidate last season, but Boston's championship run prevented him from receiving any serious interest. There is no question Thibodeau is qualified; he has worked under Bill Musselman, Jeff Van Gundy and Doc Rivers, and in 18 years as an assistant, his teams have finished in the top 10 in team defense 15 times. Thibodeau built a staggeringly stingy defense last season behind Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett, transforming Boston from the league's seventh-worst field-goal-percentage defense (46.8) in 2006-2007 to the NBA's best (41.9) last season. He did the same thing during his time with the Houston Rockets, pushing them to the top of the league in defense three years in a row.

Perhaps the only thing holding Thibodeau back is a perceived lack of communication skills. His abrupt style is fine as an assistant but may work against him if he is elevated to the top job.

Mike Budenholzer, San Antonio

The Suns interviewed the 38-year-old Budenholzer during their search for D'Antoni's replacement. Phoenix eventually settled on Porter, but the buzz has grown around Gregg Popovich's No. 1 assistant. Budenholzer began his career as the Spurs' video coordinator in 1994 and is starting his 13th season as an assistant coach.

Budenholzer is an offensive guy, known especially for running offenses in the last two minutes of a quarter. He makes his rounds to summer camps and training sessions working on a number of things, but as the heir apparent to the San Antonio Spurs' coaching throne there's no question where he sits in the hierarchy of the league's top assistants.

"First of all, Mike has a wonderful understanding of the game," Popovich said. "That's a requirement. He's really good relationship-wise, too. He's secure in his own skin and he's able to tell a player the truth whether the player wants to hear it or not."

Elston Turner, Houston
Like Budenholzer, Turner's name began to circulate near the end of last season. Turner was Rick Adelman's assistant for six seasons in Sacramento before following him to Houston. He served as Adelman's chief game strategist and organized the Rockets' game plans during the 2008 playoffs. A tenacious defender in eight seasons as a player, Turner is considered a strong communicator who has embraced Adelman's read-and-react offensive system.

"Elston, sooner or later, someone that knows what he does will give him an opportunity," Adelman said.

Tyrone Corbin, Utah
As is the case for many in the Jazz organization, Corbin operates out of the spotlight. Entering his fifth year on the Utah bench after a 15-year playing career, Corbin has played a key role in the development of the Jazz's frontcourt, including All-Stars Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur. Corbin didn't get any of the three jobs he interviewed for over the last two years (Oklahoma City, Chicago and Phoenix), but he was endorsed recently by former NBA star Reggie Miller and ex-NBA coach Doug Collins as a rising star in the coaching ranks.

One of the things that may be hurting Corbin is his position on the Jazz bench as the No. 2 assistant, behind Jerry Sloan's longtime top aide Phil Johnson. Corbin turned down a lead assistant position with Detroit in the offseason. Getting a more high-profile role with another team could help Corbin's chances of landing a head-coaching job.

Tim Grgurich, Denver
A long-time coach in both college and the pros, Grguric is widely known across the league as one of the best individual workout guys in the business. He holds a camp every summer for young players to help get them used to the vigorous routine of an NBA practice schedule. He gives every player plenty of individual face time, and his camp is so good that some teams send their coaching staffs to learn, too. Even head coaches and general managers occasionally pop in to see what's going on.

Grguric's first individual case was a young Gary Payton, who he worked with summers in Oakland. In time, that spread to players like Tim Hardaway, Chris Mullin, and Shawn Kemp as well. From there he's only gotten more and more popular with young players, and there's no one in the NBA who doesn't respect the guy for his development of burgeoning stars.

Other coaching candidates you know about
Jeff Van Gundy
Avery Johnson
Flip Saunders
Mike Fratello

There is the dynamic within management of the Raptors: General manager Bryan Colangelo has yet to hire his own coach, a move that, along with maneuvers on draft night, defines a team executive. Colangelo is committed to 2006 No. 1 pick Andrea Bargnani well beyond the minutes Bargnani has earned or Mitchell has given him. And now oft-injured Jermaine O'Neal is in the house for what we all presume is a "second round or bust'' season. But then, in the NBA, things can go bust way before May.

Mitchell was a defensive minded player and a 'coach' if I may use that word. We are definetely not known as a defensive team. No, thanks for another defense guy. Bring on some excitement. Raptors will be better on the run with the players we have.

Just because he is defensive minded doesn't mean he can teach defense. It is obvious that he can't, but that is what we need a COACH THAT CAN TEACH DEFENSE so we don't get totally humiliated like we did by Denver or let a single player score 81 points on us, another Sam Mitchell gem. I think Thibodeau is the guy we need. A coach who can teach defense who cares if he is abrupt, Sam is not the most charming fellow either.

I put previous coaches names but I only explained the assistants because people usually don't know much about them.
All coaches were assistants first and these coaches have all accomplished something. Mitchell was an assistant for 2 years before he was a coach.

Yvan Mainini (FFBB) phoned Messina and asked him to be the coach of the French national team, but he refused because he doesn't want to play against Italy in the round that will decide the last qualifier for Eurobasket 2009.
He declined his offer also because Liga Acb won't let him coach a club and a national team and Barcelona want him to be their next head coach.
