Arrow The Coach praises PJ

Quote:
Carlesimo’s experience and knowledge - and grit - will be a welcome addition to the Raptors. PJ is the kind of guy that you’d love to sit down with away from the floor and share a good meal with (especially Italian (he loves Sotto Sotto in Toronto by the way)) but on the floor - during ‘basketball hours’ - he’s ALL business.

“If it’s true that the Toronto Raptors have reached agreement with PJ Carlesimo on joining the staff as an assistant coach, I think it would be a wonderful hire for Jay Triano & Bryan Colangelo,” said Jack Armstrong.

Armstrong has known PJ for more than 25 years - not only at the NBA level, but during Carlesimo’s time in the NCAA as a Division 1 head coach in the New York area as well.

“He is an outstanding defensive coach who holds folks accountable yet has terrific people skills with everyone involved in an organization,” said Armstrong.

“He’s a well rounded Coach who has seen it and done it all and will be a valuable veteran mentor/aide for Triano,” said Armstrong. “Bottom line: he ‘gets it’. In his role as an assistant, players will play hard and like being around him each day because he’s a straight shooter, good person and he’s fair. He’s real.

The fact that PJ is the second guy with NBA head coaching experience that Colangelo has hired as an assistant makes me have even less faith in our actual head coach. I'm not sayinbg thay Carlissimo isn't a great basketball mind or a good coach, but something just ain't right.

I like the fact that he coached under Popovic for years. He has a reputation of getting on the players especially when it comes to defense which is exactly what this team needs. One question i have though is why keep Iavaroni? Either way, I just can't wait for June 25/July 1st. Let's get this started!

Reguardless of how good bad traino or any head coach is, is it not good to have assistant coaches with tons of experience anyways? I would think this is a good thing rather then a bad thing. But yes i to feel that triano is a horrible, pussy head coach

I don't know how this can be construed in a negative way whatsoever.

Weren't we all saying Triano needed a wiley, gritty experienced veteran on his staff?

Something tells me people would be a whole lot happier if BC hired the same guy with the same experience but he were black and had an American last name.

for the record i don't think this is a bad hiring as things stand now. For me it just drives home the fact that Triano is... inadequate.

I don't know about you guys, but i consider Triano the one more suitable of the assistant coach's role.

I heard in some places head coaches choose their own assistance. Its just a rumor tho.

Triano as head coach was good influence to developing young players. To a degree.
Role of assistant coaches is hard to gauge.

At least make the players protect the basket, foul hard and not give up on posessions. Then I don't care if Winnie the Pooh is the head coach

Why?

Most every coach at some point has had an older, more experienced assistant.

Phil Jackson had Tex Winter for years, he even adopted his offensive system. Did anyone think that made Phil inadequate? Stan Van Gundy has Brendan Malone, Mike Brown had Hank Egan, Lenny Wilkens had Stan Albeck, etc.

Not following your line of thought here, are you implying that teams who hire very qualified assistant GMs don't trust their head coach? If colangelo didn't trust triano, he would have hire pj as a head coach. Colangelo is a straight shooter and he had only praise words for triano, while pointing his deficiencies.now he is adressing those deficiencies, what's wrong with that.

I think the fact pj was a head coach has 0 relevance to this hiring. this is all about getting a defensive minded guy who is also very tough.

Maybe he becomes that type of guy. That would be great.

and just to repeat myself, i am not opposed to havnig Carlissimo on board.

I just don't get the impression that Triano is cut of the same cloth as the games' great coaches. Maybe my pessimism is getting the better of me. heh. time will tell.

I'm not a huge Triano fan, but I could show you Jerry Sloan's coaching record, George Karl's and a host of other well respected coaches who struggled the first few years of their coaching careers.

Agreed! Coaches need time to grow & learn from seasons past! How can you become a great coach without actually coaching?

great point.... and Acie is correct that this can't be anything but a positive. Colangelo deserves recognition for his recognition of his team's deficiencies.

I just listened to the chat on the FAN. The only thing that stood out was him going into quite some detail as to how long he's known Jay, since Jay was a young player right up to working together in the olympic program. He's had a fair amount of experience with much of the rest of the staff as well.

Jack asked him about Turkoglu, and he kinda dodged it but said he would think that what Hedo wasn't able to do last season would prove to be the exception to what he's done every other year.

And he talked about defense, and how long it takes to get good at defense.
