Default CNNSI: NBA Scout Sizes Up Raptors

Good read courtesy of CNNSI called "NBA Enemy Lines" where opposing team's scouts size up all the teams.

Sam given the ultimate compliment too. (well ... sorta ... too bad its not really true)

It might be asking too much for this team to make a big move up based on the trade for O'Neal, because there are so many doubts about what he can do over the course of a full season. As much as they need to improve on defense, they have the personnel of a team that will scramble the game and trap here and there and ultimately just try to outscore you.

I've always thought he was a bit like Sloan. That's why I've always liked him. And it's true that they both coach like they played.

It's a good read. It kind of lets you know how other teams are going to play the Raptors. What weaknesses they'll try to capitalize on. The scouting reports for the other teams are pretty good too.

I wonder who the writer is though...

Yeah, don't compare him to Sloan.

Sam has a better record his first three years as a coach in the NBA and hasn't had the luxury of two or three HOF'ers on his roster like Jerry did in Chicago.

so are you implying that Sam is a better coach than Sloan? Or that he'll ever be?

1. Sloan never coached in Chicago.
2. Sloan's teams always played smart basketball - his patented backdoor cuts alone should make all the attempts to compare the two irrelevant.

Coaching career

Immediately after retiring, Sloan was hired by the Bulls as a scout. After one season in this role, he became an assistant coach with the team. In 1979, Sloan moved up the ranks to become head coach of the Chicago franchise. He was head coach of the Bulls for less than three seasons, winning 94 games and losing 121. He led the team to the playoffs in his second year, but was fired after a poor start during the next campaign.

Nobody is comparing Sloan's full career to Sam's at this point.

Wow! Maybe you should check your facts...

Had Reggie Theus and Artis Gilmore too.
