Raptors Cliquing

Another thing that stood out from James Johnson's interview on the fan590 is when they asked him how the locker room was. He hesitated, like he didn't want to say the wrong thing. He said everyone talks to everyone, which is good, but that everyone does not hang around with everyone, which is not good.

Yes, it's obvious that they are cliquing....you see that every time there is some non-team event/outing sponsored, it is the same guys. Conspicuous by their absence are always the same guys.

And before we chalk it ALL up to race or origin, has anyone ever seen Bayless out anywere with anyone?

I guess Johnson brought it up as not being a good thing for a reason, and obviously he is used to otherwise. I don't know if it's all that unusual, but is there still a bit of a split?

The one thing that bothers me more than that is that a lot of guys don't seem to be involved at all in the city either...in ANYTHING, unless the team forces it. I just think it would be a good thing if they got involved in or initiated some things themselves instead of always being in hiding. Notice I didn't name too many names.

Out of the whole 5 years Bargs has been here, I've never heard him talk positive about the city of Toronto or really do anything fun or anything for the community in the city.

It sounds like I'm singling him out here, to sound like all of the Bargs haters(even though I'm one of them), but I'm only saying this because he's been here the longest. Even Jose goes the extra mile when talking about the Raptors organization and the city. Same with Bayless, and he's only been here for half a season..

There isn't any cliquing.. the locker is more cohesive than its ever been. You can't really judge it unless you're in the locker room, and everyone says it is in fact cohesive. And by everyone I mean BC, Triano and the players.

Do they really need to hang around with everyone? Can't they just all be friends on facebook?

I don't think it's too much of a secret.

There's the Young Onez group with DeRozan, Weems, A. Johnson and Ed Davis. They probably hang around with Joey Dorsey, Julian Wright, Bayless and Jerryd Bayless because they seem to have fun around each other.

The Euros are less outgoing, whether it's culture differences/language barriers or whatever other reasons.

Then there are the people like Reggie Evans who is respected by everyone.

They're professional basketball players.... who cares who hangs around with whom, as long as they all respect each other and get along.... Alot of the young ones are young and single, and we all know or should know that as we get older, family takes up more time than it used to...

It's just one man's opinion in James Johnson, but if he mentioned it as not being good, there is a reason for it. I think I know why.

Any team I've been on, I make it a point to go out somewhere once in a while to eat and/or drink with the guys. Why? When it comes time for us to say some things that have to change, it is not personal and no rifts form. Until that point, I could just be an asshole who doesn't know his place in saying something to another teammate. When Antoine Wright was here, I think it was him who mentioned that you couldn't say anything to anybody.

LX, you talk about accountability in management, well I have to say it should be in the room too. You can't sit there simmering unable to speak if some things are being neglected. I wonder if some of the reason the team plays differently with Bargs off the floor is passive aggressive. "If he does not have to play tough defense, why should I?"

As for being invisible in your city, that's inexplicable to me. It's good for the organization, for the player, for their legacy. And you weild so much power to change things or improve things that you have to be selfish not to.

Thats true. The young gunz are young and single, remember the article with Weems being lonely and finding a gf? :P While the more veteran players have families to tend to like Reggie and Jose. I'm sure the younger guys like hanging out with each other and doing community events. If the Young Gunz do more surprise baskerball games this summer, you can expect Davis, JJ, and Bayless to be with them,

Because the off season is BORING.

I don't think it's that important. Some guys are professionals that are there to do a job. They leave their work at work and don't socialize with co workers outside of work.

Personally, I agree with that. That's how I am, and I think that in the long run it's a more stable, sustainable way of working. As long as your co workers understand that's how you are, you're pleasant at work, and you don't make exceptions to the rule it's a really good way of doing things.

That approach is a sign of maturity and professionalism, in my opinion.

There were a few instances in Bargnani's press conference that makes me believe he's living a double life and operating as a Ted Bundy copy cat killer by night. Even so, I'm still more disgusted by his rebounding numbers, because he's a BASKETBALL player - kind of.

I think the guy who mentioned families is right on the money with things.

To some people the ball game is just their job, they go in put in all their effort and want to go home.

I like all my co-workers, think they are great but I don't want to spend time with most of them after work. It has nothing to do with them, if I didn't work here anymore I would call them up to hang out.

The problem is that you only have so much time in the day and sometimes guys have to deal with their personal side first.

whats the big deal?
i am friends with all of my co workers and we enjoy working along with one another, but you dont see me hanging out with the big old russian dude that sits across from me after work. we talk, we crack some jokes, i make fun of his accent. we dont go for drinks after work, nor do we call each other and talk on the phone either.
im guessing its exactly the same with every team in the NBA... im going to go out on a limb, but i really dont see Lebron and Wade going clubbing with Zydrunas on a nightly basis.

Like most hings, it depends.....on if the "hang out" division has any wieght at all in locker room division.....and if you are able to hold everyone accountable like Big Z probably is when LeBron and Wade say there has to be more of "X" and less of "Y" on the court.

Ever play with a ball or puck hog or a guy who only wants to score? Never mind not wanting to cover for him, you wouldn't even want to pass to him if you didn't have to.
