Chisholm: Who will lead the Raptors on the court now?

Quote:
That's because for the first time in over a decade, this team has no one on the roster that is poised to inherit the mantle of franchise cornerstone. When Carter arrived in '98, he immediately became that guy, and when he left, his torch was passed on to Bosh. Now that Bosh is getting ready to suit up for the Heat, though, his former job with the Raps is currently occupied by a big ‘VACANCY' sign. When training camp opens in three months time, every player will be in a position to earn that spot and that kind of open competition is something that will at least make this upcoming season intriguing to follow as we watch a roster full of youngsters vie for top billing with the club.

Some assume Andrea Bargnani will inherit that role. Being a former No. 1 overall pick and a player that plays Bosh's position, the conclusion is easy to draw. However, Bargnani has never shown the kind of consistency that one needs from a centerpiece player, nor has he really shown an ability to lead a team in either the NBA or when playing for his Italian National Team in the summer. Bargnani has the skills to be as great as he wants to be, but he acts like he's far more content to sit in the background and only step up from time to time. Perhaps with a more central role in the team's offense next season things will change for him, perhaps that kind of responsibility will inspire greatness in the sweet-shooting seven-footer, but after four years of sitting contentedly in the shadows that seems rather unlikely.

What is far more likely to happen is that Jarrett Jack will assume more of a vocal leadership role, with the self-proclaimed Young Gunz following that lead. It's a boon for the team that Jack has already put in serious work this summer entrenching himself amongst the team's youngsters by practicing with them as they prepare for Summer League later this week, and he will join the club in Vegas as their No.1 fan. Jack is a natural leade: he plays smart and under control on the court and in a position from which coaches like to see leadership emanate. He seems to have taken many players under his wing (DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson, Sonny Weems, Ed Davis, Solomon Alabi, Joey Dorsey) by virtue of his time spent mentoring them. He has on-court chemistry with them while working hard to develop with them, so he makes as much sense as the de facto leader of this club as anyone. He may not be the team's most talented player, but he works at relationship building in a way Bosh never did, and perhaps no task is as important for the leader of a young crew as taking a vested an interest in the year-round development of his troops .

Carter may have been the face of the franchise and cornerstone, but he was never the leader.

I'm fine with Jack being a vocal leader and a bench leader...but not anything more than that...

Raptors.com seems to think DD

I am still hoping a true on court leader will be had through TPE.

Hopefully Bargnani will finally fill his potential this year. He could be rediculously good, but a leader he is not and never will be. Bosh was never much of a leader anyways.

Jack, while Andrea will help on the offense with lost points by bosh, Jarret Jack and Jose Calderon should be co-leaders and bring the team together

by the way Kleiza could be a guy in the future, he is tough, and could bring the room togeher

I wonder if we can get AP back for Cleveland

I'll bite.

How the hell are we going to get Chris Paul?

And if anyone says TPE and/or expirings, I'm going to ban them on the spot.

BAN lol...nah I'm sure they'd take DD and some expirings but yeah we'd have to clear their long term salary. Posey, Okafor, etc.

There is no way on earth that we are going to get Chris Paul for anything we can offer whether it be any combination of picks, expirings, tpe, any of our crappy players, taking their crappy contracts back, etc.

Bargs/Derozan/ and 2 first rounders is the best thing we could offer.

I'd attempt a shot for Rubio..and take Jefferson's contract in the process.

Not quite enough salary, since Bargs is only at $8 mill right now. We have to throw in something extra. Davis is probably the next best cheap contract.

Bargs/Derozan/Davis/2 first rounders

And they'd probably still laugh at BC.
