Default Chisholm: Where is Jose Calderon?

Great read from Tim once again. Easily one of the better writers in the GTA regarding the Raptors.

Here's a snippet of his piece today:

When Jose was re-signed by the Raptors last summer it was because he had led a stellar charge in the absence of T.J. Ford that season that nearly nabbed him an All-Star selection. His heady play, combined with unbelievable statistical efficiency, got him league-wide media attention and a permanent spot at the helm of the Raptors offense. A year later, though, and Calderon not only looks unrecognizable as a floor leader, but he doesn't even seem to fit in with the plan of attack Colangelo, Triano and co. are preaching to the assembled masses.

Before we delve too deeply into these waters, though, let's open with the admission that some (though certainly not all) of his troubles can be attributed to his wonky hamstring that has handcuffed most of his season. In time he may find himself fully healthy and returning to his former glory.

Until that time, however, one has to wonder how much of that former glory is even on the horizon. Last night was a horror show for Calderon, a thorough (and shocking) demonstration of a point guard with a complete lack of control over his team's offense. He managed just three assists in that contest, tied for his season low and by far the lowest he's had after playing more than 30+ minutes this year. He routinely missed Shawn Marion wide-open around the basket, insisted on running the offense through Graham and Kapono instead of Marion and Andrea Bargnani and despite nearly a week of preaching up-tempo after Marion arrived via trade, he and the team only managed 69 shot attempts, ten shots BELOW their season average (78.6).

All of this is distressing for several reasons. The first is that in a game like last night, when the team's scoring anchor (Chris Bosh) is out, the responsibility falls to the point guard to keep the offense humming.

Bang on article. Its obvious that the injury is slowing him down but it would be naive to blame everything on that too. I think the injury and the overall dissapointing season of the Raptors is affecting him a lot mentally.

God, what a terrible year it has been for the whole team.

LOL he managed 3 assists and didn't get off many shots b/c they are playing against the league's best defence.

Not to mention his assist turnover ratio is still the best on the league if u want to see that (like last year). The problem is that he half asses the fast break... it looks like he's pushing it ... but he's not.

Jose was completely invisible in that game. How much times did Marion cut to the Basket? How many time's did Jose miss Marion for an alley?

He was a completely disaster yesterday. All he did was dumped the ball in the 3pt line. And then Bustanani had to just chuck the ball whenever he's got it, just mother ing great!

Simply amazing....no wonder we are in such trouble. We have a decent start against the Cavs. Calderon shot the ball well and attacked the basket. He shot the ball at a 50 % clip the team overall for the game was 36 %. How can you get assists when your team shoots like shit. The only chance we had was for Jose to take about 100 shots then maybe we had a chance. Some people just are plain out stupid. We lost against the Cavs because of Jose... book it. lol

Who's saying its was only his fault we lost? It was his and the whole team. All he needs to do is attack the basket and risk more when he passes. Uptempo basketball means more turnovers. He needs to be more aggresive and look for his shot a lot more. He's a hell of a shooter and a good finisher, then why not try to score more in a team struggling on offense?

He had a bad game, so what??????

He's not giving the team what they need, but he's hurt too.

Best case is they sit him out unil he is healthy, if that means he's out until next November, then so be it, this season is done. What that does, is it will gove the young guy a chance to develpe more, which, can't be a bad thing moving forward. Banks, from what I saw, is actually a decent player, so you even have to felxibility to move Ukic to the 2 spot once in a while.

All in all, we ALL know what Calderon can do, he didn't "Un-learn" the game of basketball. Chisholm is a writer, he wrote the article for a reason, to draw attention and sell advertising. You can't make a call on a guy because of one bad game, just like he isn't the best guard in the NBA after he plays better than Paul in one game.

Clearly Calderon is lacking right now, but it isn't his worth that is lacking, it's his production. He needs to be healthy, and he needs to clear whatever is in his head out. Perhaps it's time to shut him down for the year, half of Calderon isn't gona cut it.

Theres some talk here that neither him or Gasol will be there. The new coach has already put some new guys on the list.

I just read something yesterday that he refuses to not play, which of course means a two month commitment and only gives him a couple weeks between when it ends and the start of training camp.

Shit. Why can't the coach refuse him? Just let Rodriguez and Rubio handle the duties.

I dont know, many people here think he wont go. And the coach has put two new PGs in the list in case he doesnt go. This summer is the Eurobaket, maybe you read about the Wordcup in two years.

He isn't going to unlearn how to play, but I wonder if he is going to let fear hold him back. When he played that nice game against Chicago he seemed relieved as much as anything afterward. But then he's not really shown us anything since then. He needs to learn to play hurt, and also to play with the possibility of getting hurt.

The key part of Chisholm's piece is in pointing out that he doesn't look like he has any command of the offense. He looked more in command in his rookie year than he does this season. i hope it's just all part of having a tough year.

Yeah, my bad it was Eurobasket and I guess he only refused to rule out not playing...

Quote:
And Jose Calderon, even after a week's rest, still looked a step slow last night. He's nursing a hamstring injury that he acknowledges won't heal until he gets a summer-long rest and yet he continues to refuse to rule out the idea of playing for his native Spain at this summer's European championship in Poland, no matter that he tournament would require a nearly two-month commitment and end less than two weeks before training camp.
