Raptors Chisholm: Trade might hurt the tank more than help

Quote:
At this point we don’t need to delve too deeply into all of the ways that Rudy Gay was hurting the Raptors. His low-percentage, shot-happy, turnover-prone style of play has been torn apart and blogged about in so many corners it’s amazing to think he’s only been at it for 39 days this season.

He was a “star” player, though, and so his departure is meant to signal the inevitable descent in the NBA’s basement, except that there is a chance that this move could actually make these Raptors better rather than worse, especially if Dwane Casey doesn’t get the memo on losses becoming a priority. With Gay gone, that means the Raptors have freed up 15.9 shots and 57.8 touches per game to give to more efficient scores and more intelligent playmakers.

Without even considering the incoming players, that means more looks for Jonas Valanciunas, Amir Johnson, Kyle Lowry and the noticeably-improved DeMar DeRozan. That means fewer accommodations need to be made for a player that will simply arrest the offence by holding the ball and making decisions at the pace of an MLB pitcher. That means players might feel encouraged to move without the ball because now there is a better chance they’ll actually see a pass if they get themselves open. By removing just one player the Raptors have completely blown apart their offence, and considering that offence ranks in the bottom-third of the NBA, that can’t be a bad thing.

Ya tbh I have a bad feeling we might move up in the standings because the ball movement will be better, you could tell at times Rudy was really affecting some of our players in a negative way

well as of rite now we are a better team. Everybody knew that would happen once Rudy was gone.. but the tank will be in full effect if they decide to move Lowry

Mehhh, Vasquez is a good starting PG. Derozan would effect the tank a hell of alot more. Could you imagine a starting wing tandum of Ross/Fields?

Why do people assume that moving Lowry means we're in tank.

What if Lowry gets swapped for a Dragic, a Bledsoe, a Jarret Jack? Are we tanking?

indeed.. I liked him in New Orleans, but the reason I never mentioned DD because I'm not sure if the Raps are going to part ways with him.. but if he goes then yes.. Tanking indeed

On second thought, it really depends what we get for him. If we could get a good player for him then i doubt we're tanking. I doubt MU is going to deal DD for an expiring scrub and a pick.

i was unsure which path this team was tanking (i.e. tank or push for the playoffs) before the trade and despite loving the move I am still unsure what path the team is taking. My first thought when the trade was made was that we'll be better without Rudy, but at the same time this move seems like it could be the first in a string of moves to dismantle the team.

no matter how you slice it it's a good move, financially and basketbally. regardless of whethre it's a tank or a push for the playoff move I am just happy to see this team make a good move, period.
