Chisholm: Raptors have a problem on their hands

Quote:
I think it's officially safe to say that the Raptors have a DeMar DeRozan problem. The third-year swingman was a linchpin for Toronto's future as recently as this training camp, especially after coming off a tremendous second-half to last season. After being something of a non-entity in his rookie year and November and December of 2010, DeRozan turned it around on New Year's Eve and wound up averaging 19.9 ppg on .465 shooting after the All-Star break. He was attempting over five free throws per game (not enough, but an improvement), he was pulling down 4.1 rpg and the Raptors didn't look foolish talking about him as a cornerstone piece for the future. In fact, for many DeRozan had eclipsed Andrea Bargnani as the team's best player and had become the one absolutely untradeable asset in Toronto's arsenal. The assumption was that he'd show up this year ready to improve upon his output of last season and follow in the footsteps of scoring wings like Rudy Gay or Rip Hamilton.

That didn't happen.

a comment from below:

The Raptors' offense this season compared to last season is like day & night. Last season, the Raptors ran on every opportunity, creating more possessions and more shot opportunities in the open floor. This year has been grind it out, milk the shot clock half-court sets. How can anyone expect athletes like DeRozan thrive in that kind of offense? Without a training camp and enough off days for practices to properly instill offensive schemes, the team's offense has been awful. But it's also up to the players to make adjustments. As I have been saying over & over, DeRozan should lessen his shooting from distance and instead just attack the basket. Has DeRozan regressed? Yes he has. But is he a bust this early in his career? Definitely not

From that quote: "DeRozan should lessen his shooting from distance and instead just attack the basket."

Indeed.

Indeed.
Even when hes been attacking the basket he's been pretty bad this season. He's been really predictable in what he'll do, he's very passive on his drives to the rim and he's been afraid of contact.

Hes got to change his whole mindset and attack hard without being passive or afraid of contact.

i have mixed feelings about jr smith's game. Sometimes he looks like a superstar waiting to happen and sometimes he just terrible and an immature player
i guess he's like a slightly more established demar, lol

Demar's shooting slump started in our 1st matchup vs. NJN this season, but then he was our best player when we played them most recently in our W against them, so we could scratch that as the source of his struggle. After careful thought, his struggles can be narrowed down to 1 or a combo of 3 possibilities (Billy I might need ur halp! :chuck:

Theory #1:

Demar's infected himself w/Dan Majerle syndrome! NBA.com: Dan Majerle Player Info

For those not privaleged to have watched NBA ball in the 90s or are otherwise unaware, Dan Majerle used to be known as 'Thunder Dan,' as he was a ferocious slasher who could throw it down or finish otherwise. However, he then fell in love w/the 3pt shot when Charles Barkley got traded to the Suns, and slowly but surely, his 3pt attempts began eclipsing his slashing game, the original main reason he found success as an NBA all-star.

Perhaps Demar too, has fallen in love w/his newfound 3pt shot, at the expense of his slashing game.

Theory #2:

Perhaps he wasn't mentally ready for the responsibility of D'ing up to go w/being a primary scorer in Coach Casey's sytem. This theory is rather weak, as Demar's an athlete with excellent gifts and an excellent motor. What's more, Coach Casey has seemed to improve his substitution patterns as of late, thus very much minimizing any chance of burning out Demar.

Theory #3:

Young Demar, and I reckon Ed Davis as well (who hasn't asserted himself with his nice post moves or smooth shot much, though as of late he's played better), is being intimidated against his will by these behind-the-scene agents (*Cough* that slimy motherfucker David Falk *cough*) to play bad, in order to lower his value, all to get him out of Toronto the sooner & thus keep us down & send him to improve a team that's got a prime player or coach or GM or even owner that's submitted fully under these criminal agents control. A Vince Carter or Chris Bosh situation all over again for us, only sooner.

I've learned there's always dirty business going on when there's as much money as there is in NBA ball, and the politicking and coercion always soon follows.
-------------------

All Demar (& Ed, or anyone else not playing their best right now) needs to do is remember his slashing bread & butter, trust in solid play instead of extraordinary play (he doesn't need a 12-16 FG game in order to break out of his slump; solid play on both ends w/confidence will suffice), remember that 3pt shooting should be kept in its place within his package (except when he's exceptionally hot, of course), call for a rest when/if he needs it, and understand that agent's intimidation tactics (and that of their nutworks) always get thwarted once you decide to expose them to the right people, among other things I could say.

Dude, you've solved some of the world's greatest conspiracies. You might need help, but not my help.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me that "Thunder Dan" made the all-star game a few times during his career. I totally forgot about that. It's an interesting anecdote. He's a good example of how offensive stats don't tell the whole picture. Majerle could play some D, yo!

Theory #2(B)

Sort of like Theory 2: Demar is just young and inconsistent. In that sense, his not mentally ready. A number of players who are forced to develop in shit situations show signs of inconsistency. He plays for a shit team and might have too big a role.

Theory #4

SJ's theory. Demar just ain't that good.

I hope 2(B) is the answer, and over time Demar finds his way back to playing like he was during the second half of last season.

i think if we would get pg who can be efective in creating for his teamates in fast breaks, DD numbers should be much better. However i would like him to get traded at some point, but not now because we would get some scrub for him

But didn't you like Demar at one point? Am I confusing you with one of the other regular posters?

I'm not asking so that I can go "Gotcha!" If you did actually like Demar last year, what made you change your mind so quickly? That's what I'm curious about. I mean, I'd definitely consider trading him for a player who's proven they can score consitently in a starting role (Mayo -during his first 2 seasons as a starter) but I also think there's a possiblity that Demar can get his shit together. I mean, he did actually show some positive signs last year. I don't recall Harold Minor having a 35+ sample of games where he scored 19+ PPG.

Everything has been handed to DeRozan on a silver platter for his entire career. Not once has he been benched, not even to send a message. He is probably going to start the rest of the season while shooting 20%... Barbosa should be starting.

Wooops, sorry: I translated that line bad, I thought he was saying something like "improve the shot, don't attack the rim"

Well, nobody will remove from my mind the night against Orlando when he tried harshly to drive against Howard.

I think Demar Derozan has a Raptors problem.

I also think Shitsolm's work is more suited to raptorsforum, not TSN. But he's getting paid, so props to him.

He needs to completely change the form on his jump shot. The Raptors need to hire him a personal shooting coach. He's got the whole Travis Outlaw catapult system thing going for him. As far as range, and shooting on the move, and avoiding defenders, a traditional 'out in front' shot style would do wonders for DeRozan's game.
