Exclamation Chisholm: Raps' Future Looks Bleaker With Turkoglu Comments

Quote:
Now that Hedo has made it difficult for the Raptors to bring him back, though, the future of the team looks oddly bleaker than it did when Bosh refused to endorse Toronto as a likely destination for his services next season. A solid sign-and-trade for Bosh, a smart draft pick, a wise expenditure of the mid-level exception and a thoughtful trade of Jose Calderon or the team's expiring contracts painted a picture of the future that wasn't as bleak as one would have thought of a future without Bosh. Hedo could have been used more as a playmaker, which would have played to his strengths, Andrea Bargnani's versatility as an offensive weapon would have been on greater display and the dark cloud of Bosh's future would have been eradicated from the minds of the organization and the fan base forever. Without Hedo, though, the team suddenly looks a lot younger, a lot less battle-tested and the future simply looks as unclear as it has at any time since the spring of 1998.

The key to all of this isn't so much whether or not Hedo stays (although I do genuinely believe he would have had a bounce-back year in 2010-11), it's about how staggeringly uncertain the immediate future of the Raptors has become after his revelations.

Looking at the Raptors roster, you can now only say that one player is assured to be with the team when training camp opens in October (Bargnani), and only two others look likely to be joining him (DeMar DeRozan and Sonny Weems). Colangelo is on record as having said that one of his two point guards is on the way out, so until we know if that point guard is Calderon or Jarrett Jack, you can't pencil either into the rotation. Reggie Evans and Marcus Banks are both $5-million-ish expiring deals, both of which will be in play all summer (and up to the trade deadline) on the open market, so their services are hardly guaranteed. The team wants Amir Johnson back, but he's an unrestricted free agent and will no doubt shop around before committing himself anywhere. Antoine Wright, Rasho Nesterovic and Patrick O'Bryant are also free agents, but the team hasn't appeared as interested in retaining any of the three. Marco Belinelli and Joey Dorsey are sort of fringe players right now, and even if they do both return it is uncertain how relevant that would be to the team anyway.

the whole piece is a good read indeed

he writes a bit too much about the draft pick though - and I would think that pick is going somewhere else and doesn't need much consideration. I guess there could very well be a second rounder to look at.

Bye bye Jarett Jack. My Niagara Falls connection tells me Jack is out and Jose is in and guess who the other pg is ????? Its the starting Italian National player Marco Belinelli.Jose is the better pg and the better team mate. Jacky who matched Jose in stats had in many eyes a good year but Jacks stats are a bad year for Calderon. Bye bye Jack and again i CALLED IT RIGHT.

I hope not please not Jack; Caldy must be the one to be bye bye. Why would BC get rid of him seriously him and Amir where the best raptor this season and without Jack we wouldn't have had all those comeback wins. He played a big role at starting and when he was backup is also did good. If Bosh were to stay Jack would definitely stay lets hope T_T.

Not sure why you think JJ is gone?
We clearly need an upgrade with a stud PG and frankly that's not Caldy nor JJ ... both good back-ups in my view.
Caldy would certainly be more effective if we had a great 2 and strong interior defense ... which we don't.

Amen!!!!! If we could get rid of all 3 including Banks 19 million off uselessness in at PG in the Raptor system. Jose can be a stsarter for some teams and Jj value is high simply from replacing Ford and Calderon in the last 2 years.

Belinelli wouldn't be a bad option as a backup PG. He's an excellent ball handler, is a pretty slick passer and we all know he can penetrate to the basket. He's not really being utilized as it is anyways. Why not try this move?
Of course Jack is going to be the more attractive of the 2 point guards because of his salary.

I agree about Belli.... I'm still concerned about that spot defensively though.

I really hope that if Jose or Jack are dealt we give some good time to Banks to see what he can do on a consistent basis. His D looked impressive in quite a few spots and I'd be loathe to give him up unnecessarily.

Beli plays best when he's a PG (internationally)
I don't see why he doesn't get time at PG in the NBA

Stats don't tell the whole story.

Beli started his career as a pg so he knows the role and is skilled enough to do it in the league

I assume it was for defensive purposes, Belinelli isn't quick enough to guard PGs. It does make me wonder why the Raps didn't try inserting him into the two-guard lineup with JJ guarding the point guard.
