Default Chisholm: Plan B?

From TSN:

Quote:
So it's back to the drawing for Bryan Colangelo and company. While Raptors fans lament, at least they have a clearer look at the direction this team wants to go in as a result of the leak of this failed transaction's details. That helps to clarify where the team may now shift its attentions as they look to rebound from Tuesday's unexpected news.

First, since the Hedo Turkoglu for Leandro Barbosa trade still looks good to go, moving Calderon has become even more imperative than it was at the end of the season. The glut in the backcourt has only ballooned, which would make it very difficult to go into the regular season with Calderon in tow, hoping to up his trade value on the court. So, if the Raptors are determined to move him, who might be in the market for a guy like Jose?

Well, it says here that the most sensible trade is still with the Bobcats. They've lost Raymond Felton in free agency, have only undersized shooting guard D.J. Augustin to line up at the point, and after signing Tyrus Thomas to a big-money extension, Boris Diaw became expendable as a $9-million bench player.

While Larry Brown is reportedly less than enamored with Calderon's defense, there are very few alternative starting-calibre point guards on the market right now, regardless of Tuesday's move to free up some cash under the cap. The free agent market has all but dried up, with Earl Watson and Kyle Lowry now making up the cream of the crop, and very few teams are looking to trade away starting-calibre point guards, unless Charlotte considers Minnesota's reserve Ramon Sessions starting-calibre for a playoff club.

While Calderon's stock slipped some this season, he's a legit starter, is one year removed from a standout statistical season and the defence behind him on Charlotte would mitigate his liabilities a whole lot better than Toronto's defense ever could. If, as ESPN's Marc Stein tweeted, Calderon's 10% trade kicker is a sticking point, the Raptors could send the cash back in the deal to cover it as it would be worth it for them to get out from under Jose's deal. Heck, considering Calderon is the one onerous contract left on the Raptors roster, they could even look to sweeten the pot with Miami's 2011 draft pick, if that is the kind of asset that would excite Charlotte about revisiting the trade.

Alternative scenarios to make things work with Charlotte could involve attempting to manufacture a three-team deal that nets the Bobcats a bigger name like Gilbert Arenas or Baron Davis, with Calderon replacing them and Toronto using a portion of its TPE to make the numbers work. But it says here their best move would still be shrinking their prior deal with Toronto to get Calderon into town in exchange for Diaw. If Charlotte holds firm, teams like Indiana, Detroit and Memphis could use playmaking help at the point guard position, too.
Quote:
Now that Chandler is packing his bags for Dallas, who are the other options Toronto could pursue? Well, Sacramento made Sam Dalembert redundant after drafting DeMarcus Cousins three weeks ago. With Carl Landry and Jason Thompson also on their frontline, perhaps combining expiring deals and a part of the TPE could seduce Sacramento to part with Dalembert's expiring deal.

If the Raptors are willing to take on longer-term salary (and they very well may not be), then options like Andris Biedrins and Emeka Okafor are no doubt in play if the Raptors can provide salary relief. Both achieve similar ends to what Chandler would have offered, but both have four years remaining on their contracts and that could stunt the long-term growth of young guys like Davis and Johnson. While Colangelo appears quite enamored with the idea of moving Bargnani to power forward, one supposes we'll find out at what cost Colangelo is willing to make that happen in the very near future.

Don't see much of anything in here, but still that Sacramento deal seems like crap to me, hope that doesn't happen. I wouldn't wanna give up the TPE or a draft pick for Dalembert

Update: Dalembert is no longer part of the Canadaian national basketball team, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: A source familiar with the situation said Dalembert had a major falling out with coach Leo Rautins. Canada is competing in an Olympic qualifying tournament in Greece and apparently the two had a disagreement as the team boarded a bus bound for a game. "This is extremely disappointing because a lot of effort was made to make this work," Rautins told the Daily News last night. "Sam's teammates are extremely disappointed in him and how he alienated himself from them."
