Chisholm: How do you solve a problem like DeRozan?

Quote:

When the Raptors drafted DeRozan, the expectation was that he would be running the wings with Shawn Marion, proving an offensively talented counterpunch to Marion's defence-first approach. At the time, it seemed like a reasonable expectation would have been that DeRozan would actually come off of the bench and provide an athletic spark in the second unit. However, the summer offered the club a different direction and Hedo Turkoglu was brought in to replace Marion, and along with Jarrett Jack, Antoine Wright and Marco Belinelli, DeRozan's role became a lot hazier by training camp. Hedo was a scorer, so DeRozan wouldn't be asked to be a wing scorer in the starting five. Wright was a better defender and Belinelli a better playmaker, so he wouldn't be put into either one of those reserve roles, either. Plus, with Jack eating up some minutes each night at the two-spot, it became unclear exactly when DeRozan would be able to find meaningful minutes on this team.

Nonetheless, Triano held firm that he was going to start the rookie each night to get him time with a quality starting crew; but to do what, exactly? The only thing that this starting five lacks is a defender, and DeRozan was never advertised as being suitable for that role. He's a scorer first, and he looks positively unsure of how to use his primary skill set to help this team early in the season. He's not terrible at sticking to his man on defence, but as soon as he's screened off of him, or asked to pick up someone else's man in a rotation, he's lost.

I have to say Chisholm is becoming one of my favourite Mainstream writers for the raptors.

Great analyzation

How do you solve a problem like DeRozan? Easy, lower your expectations.

A little more time before negative thoughts start coming out...lets at least look at this issue come All-Star break or even the end of the regular season.....Shit the guy is a rookie after all isn't he? What were people thinking, that he would be a seasoned veteran right from the start.

Still think that it might have been a mistake to start this kid rather than Wright.

Learning to defend the 2-spot is probably the hardest thing that you can ask from a young NBA player.

I agree and on top of that you start him and make him play like 10 minutes. I seriously think that somewhat demorilizes the player, cuz they think they are good enough to start but only get 10 minutes. If he got those same minutes it wouldn't have been that bad IMO

trade him while people think he is good.

I really thought DeMar was going to be the wing we haven't had in years that got to the free throw line a lot. He actually did in summer league and preseason, but he's averaging less than 2 FTA per game in the regular season. Very disappointing.

I was actually worried he would shoot a poor percentage from the line like he did in college, but he's getting there so infrequently, his percentage is hardly even relevant.

lol thats basically it.

i personally think he should come off the bench for a little bit, see how that goes. could change things for the better, or worse but we need a change.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. Colangelo stated very clearly that DeRozan is a project. The Raptors are not in position to win a ring and so why not get the rookie quality minutes with the starting five? Let him take his lumps now.

Did LX not have a blog titled "How do you solve a problem like Andrea" a few days ago?

Apollo 11-26-2009 07:13 PM

Maybe he's LX's protege?

he;s playing token minutes. I still like the approach, it doesn't hurt us one bit (we almost never fall behind after 1 quarter), and give derozan a chance to play against every star guard for a 5-6 minutes to get a feel for his abilities, weaknesses and strengths.

Starting wright over him would make no difference whatsoever even if wright was any good, which he clearly isn't this year, at least not yet.

LX 11-26-2009 09:32 PM

thief!

And Andrea works so much better than DeRozan.

bjjs 11-26-2009 09:39 PM

I've liked Derozan's play for the most part.

LX 11-26-2009 09:41 PM

yeah - he's looked nice when the team has played well, and not so nice when the team has not played so well.

bjjs 11-26-2009 09:46 PM

He's started off the last two games getting to the rim every time he's touched the ball. He got some calls, but he's been getting a bit of the rookie treatment as well.

There is no problem as such. And if one thinks DeRozan is a problem defensively, one could always start Wright.

GrannyFro 11-27-2009 01:23 AM

I'd solve this problem by playing it more

Wright hasn't played well enough to be stealing his minutes let alone starting

30 percentile's
