Raptors Chisholm: Ed Davis unlikely to be back w/Raptors next season

Quote:
Ed Davis was never supposed to be a Raptor.

Back in 2010 the North Carolina big man was slated to go in the top-ten of the NBA Draft, to a team like Detroit or Utah, and well before the Raptors selected at thirteen. The Raptors didn't need Ed Davis. Despite Chris Bosh's imminent departure from the club, they already had a future starter lined up in Andrea Bargnani and were high on his backup, Amir Johnson, who they re-signed that summer. In 2010 the Raptors were looking for a wing. They had Fresno State's Paul George atop their draft board, and were scouring the league for another first-round pick to grab Texas guard Avery Bradley with. Simply put, two years ago the Raptors weren't looking to come out of the draft with a big and Davis has been an odd fit in Toronto ever since.
Quote:
One of the biggest factors hurting Davis right now is something he can't even control: his size. To say he is slender is an understatement, and in a league of herculean post players he's spent two years getting tossed around like a rag doll. He can't hold his position down low on offence, struggles to deny position on defence and gets absolutely abused when he tries to take the ball to the rim. At 22 his body simply hasn't developed to a point where it can put on the raw muscle he needs to stand a chance, which has made finding matchups that favour him and to help along his development a difficult task all year long.

....

Does any of this mean that Davis is a bad prospect? No, absolutely not. Not even close. He has a natural nose for rebounds, and as he puts on muscle that could make him a solid contributor to a team in that area. Likewise his passing instincts are underrated, and in the right system that could help open up options for how he contributes offensively. However, with Bargnani and Johnson in tow, Valanciunas on his way and Aaron Gray a no-brainer to re-sign, the minutes to develop Davis just won't be there in Toronto next season, which is probably why he won't be in Toronto when next season begins.

Of course, Davis was never supposed to be in Toronto in the first place. He was almost like an inherited pick, a guy Colangelo took because he thought he should, not because Davis is who he wanted. The roster was never really designed to force development out of Davis like it was for Bargnani and DeRozan, and probably will be next year for Valanciunas. He never felt like a guy the organization was excited to stand behind, just a guy they were happy to have. Davis still has a lot of growing to do as a player and could still turn out to be a fine professional, it's just unlikely that any of that happens with him playing in Toronto.

And if we get the first pick, he and Bargs, will be gone. Well I would hope Calengelo would do that.

I find him to be one of the better if not the best sports writer in this city. And what he's saying is certainly not the least bit far fetched. And he's not saying anything that hasn't been brought up here as a possibility.

He's garbage...He plays favourites, he exaggerates, he thinks highly of himself when he shouldn't. He's no better than some of the more intelligent yet below-average posters on this forum.

He puts a bad taste in my mouth.

If we just give away Davis we will regret it. When he puts on weight he's going to be a very nice player. He's already proven he can rebound defend and block shots. He's long and 6'11. You dont just give guys like him away.

True, but why can't he be flipped for another nice player at a different position?

6'11? They guy is listed at 6'10 and is probably 6'9 in shoes. I wouldn't mind him gone either. He doesn't contribute much very often.

He won't get there playing 10mpg, and unless we trade Andrea or amir, he may not even get that. Even this year, we had him at sf at times, presumably to get him more minutes.

There are 96 minutes available. Andrea will get 35, jv hopefully around 28, Amir about 25. That leaves 10mpg for Ed and gray. And gray will get some minutes against big centers which makes Davis the odd man out.

The trick is to get something in return, what I'd love to see is trading our pick and Ed for the #2 pick if we end up lower after the lottery.

He'd definitely be a very nice piece to add in to such a trade scenario..... it's going to be an interesting offseason.

I'll be happy to watch him play on another team I suppose. But this is a bad piece of garbage. Chisholm takes bits and pieces off other Internet sources, and then spins it all into something that seems reasonable. Yeah - if there can be something attained in return for him it gets done. But that's the case with everyone on this roster. Everyone. How and why Ed was drafted, or how slender he is at the moment, have very little bearing on what will occur in the future. His contract is not going to bring much back on it's own, and there is no great rush to move him right now.

Wow! We must be watching different games. After a slow start to the season imo he's been as good as Amir, better some nights. As was said earlier when he puts some weight on and gets a full training camp he'll be a nice player. Can't believe we'd give up on him so quickly. He's barely played a full seasons worth of games in his career and one half assed training camp under his belt. That being said, if Davis can be packaged with another player and/or a pick and get us a solid PG or SF then i'd do it, then we just slide Amir in behind Bargnani.

i'd love for him to be a main piece to us getting someone like jennings. it'd be excusable, i don't think i'd be too fond of us picking up a second pick. we need proven commodities.

i'm agree with that article.
1. davis didn't want to be here in the first place.
2. he can be trade easly. and bring here a late or mid-first round this draft. (to atlanta for their first)
3.i will prefer to keep amir (more energy and hustle)
4. like the autor said, davis isn't a scrub, and like most thin big men in this league he need time to get some muscle.
