Raptors Chisholm: DeRozan not living up to fans expectations

Quote:
There once was a Raptors draft pick, as athletic as any in his draft class, that the team had very high hopes for as a linchpin in their starting lineup. He was a starter from day one, and the team was determined to groom him by throwing him into the fire right way. In the NBA, however, he had trouble making his imprint in games. He seemed passive, too willing to slink into the background. His athleticism, for all that it was ballyhooed, never really seemed all that impressive outside of the odd uncontested dunk. He wound up being one of the more regrettable players in the Raptors history.
His name was Joey Graham.

I think most keen-eyed Raptors fans can see where I'm going with this.
Now, it's not that DeMar DeRozan has reached the depths that Graham did as a Toronto Raptor. He's already brought more to the table than Graham ever did, and his ceiling still seems tantalizingly high, even if, in his second year, he's having trouble approaching it.

DeRozan is having a lot of trouble living up to the expectations of the fans, and given how prominent he is in the team's marketing efforts, you have to assume that the front office expected more from him this year, too. While he looked like he was about to turn a corner a few weeks ago after an impressive showing in two games in Florida, he quickly regressed back to his non-aggressive ways and has become the kind of player that only seems capable of putting up stats in a blowout (on either side of the score).

Well at least play with some heart? I haven't seen DeRozan play with heart in a long time.

I agree.

I can't say that I ever really expected DD to be a superstar though so I can't say that I'm THAT disappointed....

What saddens me is the fact that we couldn't nab a "hometown boy" (of sorts) in Stephen Curry who grew up shooting at the ACC.... great shooter and scorer, awesome court vision... NBA pedigree... can play both guard spots.... talk about an ideal fit for us.

DD = Graham

Is this possible?

Strangely no mention of Bargnani
Yeah there is. I certainly have to disagree with his knock against Barbosa though. We need Weems and Demar to be more like him and drive to the rim. I don't give a crap how many assists Barbosa gets or doesn't get, Triano is playing him more at the SG/SF position than as a PG.

He came out of the draft and everyone knew it was gonna take him a while to develop. He has had some good games as well. It's just time for him to show some consistency, we all know long it took Bargs to show any, so I can wait for DD

bigs take longer, and there was no language barrier... so it better not take much longer.

If Weems has value on the market, I wouldn't be opposed to him being traded.

Bargnani is a big, which generally takes longer to develope in the NBA. At the 2-3 spot, in the second season you need to show more consistency especially if you're gonna be given the starting position. His overall mid range game is worse this season which is shocking, considering how atrocious he looked from that area last season. Maybe he just over thinks things when taking a J, but either way he needs to come off the bench and earn his minutes imo.

I think so too, DD is starting to take himself being a starter as a given. I think he needs a wakeup call, sit him down and start Barbosa for a few games. He needs to start practising jump shots because until he starts making them players are just going to play off of him, same for Weems.

Don't let them practice jumpers exclusively... that will only encourage jumpers..... they just need to be agressive around the rim, defensively, and on the run... Weems has been, but he just needs to reign it in.

These two should be able to affect the game in so many ways.... not just jumpshooting.

It's not Derozan's fault that he was advertised as something he's not. That being a super athletic slasher. I, like a lot of Raptors hopeful fell for the hype, when really, he's an average, below-the-rim specimen. Doesn't mean he can't provide productivity at the 2 spot though. Just needs focus on being more cerebral and advantageous, not to mention fundamentals.

Well, when he's not slashing he's garbage because he can't shoot. He was a slasher in College and should concentrate on being that again more often.

Demar isnt disappointing at all. he is exactly what people should have expected. a fair player better suited to come off the bench. he has a LONG way to go and I for one havent really seen any sort of improvement at all. he has no handles, no moves, and NO SHOT.

that is one thing anyone can fix over the course of a year plus if they were truely dedicated.
