Chisholm: Calderon is Triano's biggest test

Quote:
The facts are these: Two seasons ago Jose Calderon usurped T.J. Ford's starting job by playing such insanely efficient basketball that he simply couldn't be removed from the starting lineup of the team. Egos clashed, Ford balked, and Jose ultimately agreed to go back to the bench. Everyone knew, though, that while Ford won the battle, Calderon had won the war.
Quote:
Since that time, however, Calderon's game has been in steady decline. Be it from injuries or inconsistencies, he has struggled to maintain the level of play that thrust him to the forefront of the organization's core. His status hit a new low last month when the team was struggling; his stats were down across the board, his defence was being chided as a large proponent of what ailed the team and he couldn't seem to curb either trend. When he went down with any achy hip in early December, no one was quite sure where the team was headed, though many predicted the direction was straight down.

In fact, what actually happened was that Jarrett Jack brought some defence to the starting point guard spot, Hedo Turkoglu was given a larger role in the playmaking, and the Raptors started reeling off wins at a rate not seen in almost two years. Even the oft-maligned Marcus Banks began chipping in with some rugged play off of the pine. To watch the team play was to forget, for a time, that Calderon was even a factor that would one day have to be considered when his body finished healing up.

Well, tomorrow is that day, and Jay Triano has some big questions to answer going forward.

This time its a bit different. Jack is not playing better than Jose by himself.
He meshes with Hedo better and plays much harder starting than off the bench.
To maximise input from both, no brainer to let Jose come off the bench for starter minutes.

Josh Howard, Tyrus Thomas, Ryan Gomes all come off the bench after missing games.

LOL, I would not want to come back from injuries and start. Triano will limit his minutes untill he is ready, but just imagine Caldy thinking shot first, and letting hedo do the work.

Actually he is...

He is shooting 52% since starting

He's been fairly solid while filling in, averaging 12 points and six assists as a starter and leading the offense during the Raptors recent run of good play (6-1 in last seven).

Those are actually calderons exact same numbers this season well actually 11.2ppg 6 assists and 51% fg.

Jack just brings better defense to the game and works way better with hedo and the rest of the starting lineup

What it all comes down to is if Jose can adjust to playing off the ball more.

Jack has no problem doing this.... Jose, on the other hand, seems to need the ball in hands ALOT to be at his most effective.

It'll be interesting to see what happens tonight....

Hopefully Calderon did a lot of analyzing and thinking while he was injured...and made some conclusions about what he needs to focus on

^^ those aren't bad thoughts. Jose is a underrated shooter, hopefully he starts to play off the ball more, do what Marco does. Except he'll be sinking those turn around's

People are saying they don't want to see Jack at SG because he was ineffective there earlier in the year when in reality he wasn't playing well at PG either.

Now that JJ's game has rounded into form and he's had the chance to get acclimated with his teammates I'm pretty confident we'll see a very effective Jarrett Jack whether he's playing PG or SG.

Maybe zachus, but I would worry that his problems at both spots had to do with his overall role.
