Default Chisholm: 5 inexpensive options for the Raptors on D

Interesting names for a young squad. I'd move for Maurice Evans personally.

Quote:
PG - Anthony Carter

I advocated for Carter last season, and I'm doing it again today. While he's no spring chicken at 36, he is the ultimate example of a coach's player. He's got tremendous basketball I.Q., he's a natural locker room leader, and he's still got a tremendous feel for the defensive game that Casey wants to implement. He can guard ones and twos, using solid fundamental principles rather than jaw-dropping athleticism, and he'll be dirt cheap and okay with a one-year deal. The team needs a third point guard regardless, and they'd be hard pressed to find a more suitable option than Carter.

SG - Maurice Evans

Evans, coming off his stint as the vice president of the players union, is another stellar locker room presence that brings a fundamental approach to defence as well as the desperately-needed ability to hit the corner three (a skill no Raptor seems adept at right now). Evans is the epitome of a journeyman player, having suited up for seven teams in his eight seasons, so short deals are no stranger to him. Considering that the team doesn't have a single guard with legit defensive credentials, getting a guy like Evans should be a priority.

SF - Damien Wilkins

Wilkins was a nice surprise for the Hawks last season - who picked him up for nothing - rewarding them with meaningful minutes, and he still has enough left in the tank to be a useful option to a team like the Raptors. He's seen some lean years in his career, so he's the type to work hard for any team that invests in him, and he's got enough bounce in his step to keep pace with some of the more athletic wings in the NBA. He'd offer the club some of the positives of a guy like Julian Wright without Wright's penchant for low-I.Q. mistakes.

PF - Jason Smith

Jason Smith's defense isn't the kind that gets him a lot of notice, but he's young and nimble enough to move around nad cover modern power forwards - and he's shown an inclination to do it. At 7-feet tall, he provides good length that helps him close space and he'd provide a nice presence in pick-and-roll defensive situations. He can also hit the mid-range jumper, so he's not a total bust on the offensive end, either.

C - Jason Collins

This is a tremendously deep category to pluck one player from, but while Tyson Chandler gets all the notice at the top end and Joel Przybilla gets all of the 'bargain basement' press, Collins would be a stellar under-the-radar pickup, especially after the job he did on Dwight Howard in last spring's Playoffs. Collins fights on defence - something almost unheard of in Raptors history - and he has defensive intelligence that affords him more than just physicality to combat his opponents with. He's the kind of defender that frustrates the heck out of his man, and if the Raptors were to get him he'd get actual minutes against certain matchups with regularity.

very nice pickups and perfect examples of players we need to focus this free agency
forget all the talk about chandlers and gasols who are only going to cost us lottery spots and get us nowhere, we need veterans to teach our young players how to play. Let's wait a couple of years until we go after big name free agents, once we have a strong core in place.

of course, if we could get chandler or gasol for market price or lower, let's go for it, they're very nice trade assets. But to overpay for them would be criminal.

i strongly agree.

people have turned me around a bit with all the chandler/gasol talk saying you don't pass up the opportunity to get a top player and they could be a linchpin in casey's new defence.

i get that, but look at the guys you can get for cheap, that will have enough in their game to be a part of the transition to a better D AND also have that vet, leader mentality we want.

These are the guys we'd be smart to go for imo. Like the idea of all of them, esp carter, evans and collins.

if Carter and evans are such lickerroom leader, so take them.
that what we need to complete our roster.
and collins, i'm a fan of what he did in the serie against orlando. he did a better job at D than hoford. so, i will be fine with this 3.
