Default Charles Barkley - NBA made a mistake leaving Vancouver

I'm watching the post game show (Jazz vs. Rockets), on TNT (RaptorsTV), and Raptors are being featured as one of the teams going through the "Dog days" segment (by Kenny Smith). Kenny was talking about how it can be very difficult for some players to stay focused/hungry in games because they know that they won't making the playoffs.

While talking about the Raptors and how they should work on for the next season (figuring out their identity), Barkley added how it is important for the league that there is a team in Canada and that he loves it. He also added how NBA made a big mistake by leaving Vancouver and that he thinks we should have more teams in Canada; saying that he'd love to see Grizzlies back so there two teams in Canada again (I'm paraphrasing, but it's something along those lines).

Anyways, just wanted post this for those who didn't watch RapsTV tonight.

Charles Barkley for Prime Minister!

He's right.

I've been saying it since it happened that Stern and the NBA really punk'd the people of Vancouver.

The move from Van city to Memphis NEVER should have been allowed.

I will never understand pro sports franchises.

The NHL pulls out of Winnipeg and Quebec City (2 of the most rabid hockey cities in North America) because they weren't "economically viable" and put teams in Columbus and Nashville instead.

Then the NBA moves out of Vancouver and puts teams in OKC and CHA?

I've never fully understood the CHA move.... that area of the states is a hotbed of great basketball with fans having access to both Duke and/or UNC. It's not surprising to me at all that the NBA is faltering there.

its all about the (new) money

they get so excited to see a new rich owner

moving the hockey teams to bigger cities was so they could get a bigger $$$ tv deal

putting teams in OKC/CHA/MEM I will never understand
CHA/MEM are college bball towns
do you think they'll make the same mistake and move to Louisville

He's right.

It's simple. The Grizz ownership at that time was terrible. With even moderately responsible ownership Vancouver would have a successful team. They love ball out there, and the fan base was realy good. You already have a good west coast core of team, Vancouver would be a great addition.

But no, lets keep smal market ameican teams that drop 2000 asses in the seast 41 times a year. WAY better idea.

now they are in D.C.
they can't pay for their new ballpark
team sucks
low attendance
worst TV deal in MLB

This is what I don't understand though. Even if the Grizz ownership WAS bad for those first few years.... why move the team to an even WORSE market?

I guess that the draw for MEM was that Jerry West was willing to take it on... but it still makes no sense to me from a $$$ point of view.

They have to be losing money hand over fist.

once a Canadian team starts losing money they move

once a U.S. based team losses money the NBA/NHL/MLB gives them money so they can survive

its really simple

I miss the Grizzlies, too. The fans didn't get much of a chance to ride things out, given the mismanagement of the team, and now it will take FOREVER to get another Canadian team up here because they view that as a failure. Sir Charles hits home again.

Gretzky was asked about whether or not Winnipeg could support a franchise and he basically said that there'd be no questions about filling the arena and support from the fans, but that the 'corporate base' just wasn't there. I think that's what it comes down to with cities like Winnipeg and Quebec City. Vancouver, not so much.

I love Charles, he speaks the truth and obviously has some love for nba in Canada.
I wish there was still an nba team here in Vancouver, hell i wish Seattle still had a team, at least then i wouldn't have to travel 6+ hours to get to see a game.
An Vancouver should not be mentioned in the same breath as Quebec City when talking about sports franchises, Quebec City is like a little village in comparison, there is no corporate base as most people are employed by some level of government.

Your right Vancouver already has the arena and practice facility to hold a franchise. Also, the 2010 olympics are being held here. That must mean something for athletics.

If they moved to KC or SD, maybe even Vegas I would get it
but Memphis

every league has this problem

Maybe it was just too simple to run the NBA
and Stern wanted a challange
we'll never know

after all these years Vancouver still had better attendance

That Charlotte got "another" franchise is beyond idiotic. I mean it wasn't that long ago the New Orleans Hornets were the Charlotte Hornets.
