Change is on tap at MLSE

A host of reporters wanted to know if this meant, in the pre-salary-cap days of the NHL, that Teachers’ was willing to spend the kind of money necessary to make the Maple Leafs a Stanley Cup champion.

Richard Peddie, MLSE’s president, suggested the best person to answer that question was Robert Bertram, the highest-ranking Teachers’ executive on the MLSE board. Bertram did not advance to the podium and the press conference quickly ended. He bolted from the room, practically running down the hall to escape a mob of interrogators.

And so it went with the group’s ownership of Toronto’s professional hockey, basketball and soccer teams. The Teachers’ executives were a faceless group quite happy to milk the MLSE cash cow but felt no responsibility to answer to anyone, least of all the paying customers, for the repeated failures of its teams. That was the job of the hired help, like Peddie, part of whose job description became taking regular abuse from a disaffected fan base.

Looks like Peddie has been the fall guys for OTPP all along.

Peddie is/was the fall-guy, but he's not innocent. He knew exactly what he was getting in to.

Let's hope once this all gets sorted out (the sale), that a person/people that care about the product are in charge. I was watching the Score, and there was an interview with a new owner of an NHL team (Sabres, perhaps?), and that he was a fan first, and now an owner. Similar to Mark Cuban.

At any rate, whomever buys the controlling share of MLSE will want to make the product grow, and get a decent return on investment. Let's hope that translates into more wins for this team! Most new owners want to see immediate impacts, so I think that this can only bode well for the future of all teams under the MLSE umbrella.

The key is getting an owner who is also a fan. That's how i see it.

Now in this market that shouldn't be too hard as far as the Maple Leafs are concerned, but i'm not so sure about the where the raptors would fall though.

Wish Jim Balsillie was a b-ball fan.
