Chad Ford's Chat Wrap: Raptors Related

Quote:
Zach(Toronto): Could Derozan bring back some Vinsanity for the Raptors ?

Chad Ford: That's his upside. If he's there, it would be hard for the Raptors to pass. Ditto for Tyreke Eavsn.
Quote:
Steven (Toronto): Who's more likely to be on the board when the Raps pick at 9? DeRozan, Evans or Holliday?

Chad Ford: At this point ... DeRozan. I think Holliday is on the rise but in my newest mock draft (which debuts tomorrow) both Evans and DeRozan are on the board.
Quote:
Chris (Madison, WI): What do you think about Blair?

Chad Ford: He's a beast. He's gotten in better shape. Has measured 6-7 1/4 in shoes with a 7-foot-2 wing span at a couple of NBA workouts. Has a decent 33 inch one step vertical. And he know what an amazing rebounder he is. I think he'll be better than people think and could go as high as Toronto at 9, Milwaukee at 10, the Nets at 11, Pacers at 13. No way he passes the Bulls at 16.
Quote:
Chet (LA): How is Blair different than Robert Tractor Traylor? Seriously. They are both big guys who have struggled with their weight. They both have really good footwork. Don't forget, Traylor was VERY highly regarded coming out of Michigan.

Chad Ford: It's a great point. If Blair doesn't keep his weight under control, that's who he'll be.
Quote:
Smitty (DC): Every year there's a guy ranked in the teens a month before the draft that ends up going top 8. Is Terrence Williams that guy?

Chad Ford: Talent wise ... yes. He's the guy. Background check wise ... I don't think so. I think teams are a little scared off.

He had a bad attitude as a kid, and word is he was hard to coach. Anyone who watched him knows how much Pitino turned him around though. One of the nicest guys in this years draft.

I watched Blair play last year 2-3 times.

You don't teach what he has. He's big, he's a man, he's agressive, he's mean, he WANTS the ball 24/7, and has the guts to go get it.

I see a lot of players out there that have talent, and those guys get left behind when they get to the NBA because they aren't agressive enough to make it. Blair is no Barkley, I am not gonna make that comparison without seeing what he can do in the show, but I tell ya what, if I'm Colangelo, I can't afford to make call on a guy that becomes the next Gerald Green when I have a proven, and beastly guy in front of me.

If he's there, take hin.

He ain't gonna be there though.

I have a feeling he might be there for our second pick. The guy has conditioning issues, which always scares off teams.

Assuming our second pick is in the 20-25 range, he'll definitely be gone by then.

If we pass on him at 9, then he could be gone as soon as soon as 10 with Milwaukee. They need a PF since CV's as good as gone, and you know Skiles would love him. I've heard jersey like him as well, and they need a four. Indiana desperately need a guy like him. So if he`s the guy, we`re taking him at 9, i`m almost certain.

I just looked at a mock drafts and he's projected to go to Utah at #20. I saw another mock draft that had him going to the Pacers at #13. So who knows where he might go if we don't take him at #9, but like i said if he's projected to go anywhere from #13-#20, he'll drop. One, because other players ahead of him will drop and therefore dropping him in the process (always seems to happen), secondly his issues with conditioning will scare off a few teams i'm sure.

that makes no sense jeff. he could easily be the player that jumps up and forces other players to drop.

True enough. Actually it could go both ways though. If someone at #12-20 really wants him but another player they thought wouldn't be there falls in there lap who knows? To be honest i just would rather us go after a wing player. So i'm showing my bias. I just don't get going after another PF/Big? Unless it's part of a bigger plan and BC has a trade(s) in mind to bring in wing help. B/C Delfino/AP/Kapono won't cut it at the 2.

you guys have short memories.

Have you seen his draft work puts?

Work out interviews? Scouts that have said he has already started to raise eyebrows?

He already dropped 10 lbs, and he looked pretty effin ripped to me.

He's a big kid.

A guy with conditioning issues loses 10lbs and he's ripped?

he was 300 lbs at his max, but that was last year. he was more like 285-290 this year, and according to chad ford has lost 15 lbs since then.

Where that should help Blair the most is on the defensive end of the floor. A lot of teams are concerned that Blair won't have the foot speed to defend the pick-and-roll in the league. What I saw at his workout suggests he does.

Blair looked much quicker and more explosive than he looked at Pittsburgh. His quickness and leaping ability were impressive for someone his size. He went as hard as anyone in the gym that day and didn't slow down toward the end.

Perhaps most telling was a drill in which Blair and others had to throw the ball hard off the backboard, leap up to catch it, come back down and then leap again for a dunk. Blair repeatedly exploded up and finished strong above the rim. A few times, it seemed as though Blair would pull it down.

What's funny to me is, for the last month+ we've been discussing possible draft picks and this player wasn't really talked about much if at all. At least not seriously. It was all about Derozan/Henderson/Curry/Evans and a few others. But he was basically an after thought. Or do i have a poor memory?

Thabeet 24 min, 5 points, 4 rebounds, he fouled out of the game

Blair completely out muscled Thabeet and had the play of the game when he blocked Thabeet and gave the go ahead pass to provide a break away lay up which sealed the game

Tractor Trailor?? Yikes, lets scoop him up. I do remember that, thanks for the refresher.

Seriously though, i haven't seen him play so i'm basically going by what i've heard and the fact that imo we really need to take the best wing player available at #9.

Plus i never said he was never discussed, but lets face it the discussion has really centered on wing players.

My interest in Blair was piqued when Colangelo specifically said they might want a player with girth...he actually said girth twice, right after saying he wanted toughness, rebounding, and defense. Blair matches all those qualities.

He's got a good wingspan, big body, and an intensity this team needs. Conditioning isn't a big deal when he'll be coming off the bench the first year, and he's already shown he can get into better shape if needed, though you have to worry about a player who only now seems to be highly motivated to cut weight, perhaps because he could get away with it in the NCAA.
