Default Chad Ford: Raps Cap 9 mil if Marion, Parker, and Graham walk

Quote:
The Raptors could be around $9 million under if they let Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker and Joey Graham all walk. That's a possibility. However, Bryan Colangelo has been saying he'd like to re-sign Marion. If the two come to an agreement, the Raptors' cap room is essentially gone.
I thought they would be further under if Marion, Parker, and Graham all walk.

No way all 3 of them walk. BC will probably nab one of them.

With $9M he could lock up Ariza and a decent bench player. Ariza should be the prime target if he's serious about the long term. Marion should be the prime target if he's serious about trying to keep Bosh, which I think is totally unrealistic.

Graham and Parker aren't going to make enough of an impact to justify keeping them at the salaries they want. Time to move on.

If that's the case....it's actually 16Mil if you include the MLE & Vet minimum.

Are they permitted to use the MLE if they enter free agency with cap space?

You can't use the MLE (or any exceptions for that matter) if you're under the cap.

We have 46Mil commited without Marion/AP/Joey,

The cap is 54Mil i believe, and if we go over the cap after re-signing some of our players. we then can use MLE/Vet minimum and spen up to the tax threshold which should go down to around 70Mil. I think??

Quote:

Player 2009/10

Chris Bosh $15,779,912
Jose Calderon $8,219,009
Andrea Bargnani $6,527,490
Reggie Evans $4,960,000
Marcus Banks $4,464,000
Kris Humphries $3,200,000
Patrick O'Bryant $1,620,000 (TO)
Roko Leni Ukic $1,350,000
Pops Mensah-Bonsu $1,000,497 (QO)
Quincy Douby $855,189
Nathan Jawai $736,420
TOTALS: $46,092,020
This is why BC wants to sign Marion and S&T AP. Because it would put us over the cap therefore give us more money to spend.

cap: $56 mil (important for signing FA's)
tax: $72 mil (retaining players/space for MLE and other exceptions)

right now the Raps are on the hook for $46.1 mil
(Bosh/Caldy/Bargs/Evans/Banks/Hump/POB/Ukic/Pops/Douby/Jawai)

56-46.1= 9.9 in cap space to sign FA's, this is whar Ford is talking about

in order to use the MLE u have to go over the cap ($56 mil)

So 10Mil+ i(re-signs) puts us over the cap? Sign Marion for 3yrs/24Mil and S&T AP.

That's what I was thinking. So, its to their benefit to work a sign and trade for Parker and Marion if they have no intentions or cannot work contracts.

And once you sign someone elses free agent you must remain under the cap. there is no way to get back over it this year in order to utilize the exceptions which only go to teams who are over the cap and need a ways to add something. You sign free agents but that's the price you pay for the first year anyways.

Well put and that is why signing Marion is our best option. . Basically we have Marions whole $17 mill to spend if you were to use the whole amount up to the luxury tax but the cap is different, and lower and is what is used for the basis of signing free agents. You are not eligible to use exceptions after signing a free agent. The space between the salary cap and the luxury tax level usually comes from using bird rights to sign your own free agents, adding salary via exceptions, the draft, permitted trade salary differentials and annual raises. It can take 2-3 years before you build up to the luxury tax level again after a free agent aquisition. Simply because you are not allowed to go over the cap that season.

In Marion's case we were significantly over the cap when we made the Marion trade so it's conceivable that if you want to get under the cap you may gain $0 additional cap space for the purpose of aquiring free agents if all other salaries remain the same. Or more simply, if we're at the cap when we made the Marion trade we would have had his whole $17 mill if all else were to stay the same. Than again, the cap is potentially coming down this year so that would make it even less on it's own!
