Default Chad Ford: Colangelo will not trade Bargnani

"With Ed Davis and Amir Johnson showing signs of potential. Does there come a time when Toronto looks to trade Bargnani? Maybe they should take a shot at Odem?

Chad Ford (1:36 PM)

It's a good question. The answer is ... not as long as Bryan Colangelo is the GM. GMs fall in love with the players they draft. It's part of our psychological need to justify our decisions. Colangelo took him No. 1 over Rudy Gay and Brandon Roy. He needs to be right. Trading him is tantamount to admitting he was a bad pick. Lakers are suffering from the same problem with Bynum. As a rule around the league, teams tend to overvalue their own players and undervalue other team's players. It's partly why we don't see more trades in the NBA. But if Colangelo were to leave the Raptors, my guess is the first move a new GM would make would be to trade Bargnani. He's talented, but it's tough to have a 7 footer on the floor who refuses to rebound or defend anyone."

Chat: Chat with Chad Ford - SportsNation - ESPN

If BC signs his 5 yr extension as expected, the Raptors may be stuck with Bargnani long-term. What happens if the Raptors draft players like Jared Sullinger, Perry Jones, Enes Katner. Is there enough playing time and touches?

Ford's really basing that on nothing though. I'm not expecting Andrea to be dealt, but there's nothing there to suggest he wouldn't trade him.

how isn't a one dimensional player at least available for trade if the right offer was made?

honestly Bargnani is best suited as a 6th man

I don't buy this, colangelo usually makes good on his mistakes as soon as possible. Both in Phoenix (the marbury deal, dealing nash to dallas and getting him back) and in Toronto (JO lasted 3 months, turkoglu a year, kapono two years, jack one year etc), if he doesn't think a player fits, he will trade it.

the main issue with Bargnani is finding the right time to do it so we maximize our return. Of course, there's always the option that colangelo thinks Bargnani is a good fit, but personally I highly doubt that. It's pretty clear that he will never have the focus and intensity necessary to build a true winning team, so sooner or later we will need to upgrade the center position.

The unfortunate thing is that finding a good center outside of the draft is basically impossible, no team in their right mind trades the kind of center we'd need to upgrade bargnani. This summer there'll be a few potential candidates (perkins, chandler, gasol, oden and nene), but most likely they will all stay with their current teams.

The only way I can see us keeping Bargnani is if we acquire a starting centre this summer (or earler), and Amir and ED are the two backup bigs.

I hate when we take out Ed for Bargs in the fourth, our D gets so much worse.

Listen...

It's a 2 way street. This was the exact bbm to my friend after the game:

"Bargnani almost won us the game with his offense, and lost us the game with his defense".

He was atrocious in the paint. No amount of offense can make up for pathetic defense from your centre. Even if he averaged 39 ppg.

we still lost, so whats ur point?
we know what Bargnani can do offensively and he gives us a good performance once every 5 games
if he couldn't even get up for a game like that then i don't know what will

Are you serious? that game was hardly a terrible defensive showing by Andrea..... might not have been good, but I'd suggest you're focusing on AB far too much and missing out on alot of other missed assignments on this team.

Let's just blame all of the defensive fuckups on AB so we can sleep at night.

If someone is driving into the paint, Bargnani never has and never will try to get in the way....he's a deer in the headlights in the paint. This may be acceptable as a power forward, but as long as he is our centre playing 35 mpg, we will not be good defensively. Yes I do single out Bargnani defensively more than any other players, perhaps other than Jose.

Chad Ford was right with GMs over-valuing players they draft. Remember a few years back when Paxson would never trade Deng, Ben Gordon and Hinrich. BC is putting Bargnani in a pedestal, while other GMs are offering low-ball trade scenarios. Bargnani will never traded until the Raptors get a true franchise player. As soon as D. Rose came in the picture, Ben Gordon was suddenly taking too many shots. Chicago let him walk for nothing. Hinrich was dealt for cap space so Chicago could enter into the 2009 summer free agent sweepstakes (Hello Carlos Boozer). While Deng and his contract are available for any takers. Draft a true franchise player and Bargnani will be out the door.

Even Jack Armstrong noticed it during the replay and got on Bargs(for once). And don't tell me "Wade would've dunked on his ass and made him a poster", Bargs is 7 feet, he can easily foul him to make him earn his points at the line, and even better Wade isn't too good of a free throw shooter this year.

Just one of probably many more examples.
