Celtics - Raptors (first quarter with Calde) analysis

Celtics - Raptors (first quarter with Calde) analysis

As I said a week ago, I have made some analysis of the 1st quarter of the Celts-Raps game when Calde played (idea was all the time Calde played, but this takes me too much time). My point was that that quarter (the score) wasn't due to Calde's defense (which I say it was good), and as I don't change my mind without watching it, have thought it would be nice show you what happened that quarter.

So I have just done a play by play with (a lot of )pics and some text to point whats happening in the pic, and some more text at the end of some plays with the key point or points.

And if you feel that Calde should defend better, 1st think about his injury. I haven't, for me his defense was enough (no worse than others in the team).

The fact is that Rondo is one the fastest guy NBA and thing is that he only took advantage from it 3 times in 12 minutes, the rest of the time he is using screens. And Raptors had the guy controlled (ok, take out the fast breaks and those 3 times) doing a good job and following his defensive system, led the opponent to the baseline without let him go to the middle of the paint.

Only one fast break was due to a turnover, most of them was due to shots didn't fall and you can see those shots were shots you want they shoot, Celtics did a good job too, with just a bad shoot I think( a KG's 3 pointer with 2 seconds left).

Ray's 3 pointers didn't come because Raps helping Calde nor other mate, they were due to some fails at the rotations or bad decisions so when to do the helps. If I'm remembering well (it can be watched at the pics if you want) only one Ray's 3 was due to Calde not doing a rotation and staying at the paint. Way to go Ray, 5 from 5 3s.

I just hope you enjoy it.

Notes: there are somethings that are not perfect: ball cannot be watched in some pics (you can read what happened or just watch the players' faces), some pics haven't good quality and some pics had to be taken after I did others (needed more pics) so I had to change their names to put them in their right place and not becoming mad.

-2nd play:

Rondo with the ball - Drives to the right and inside while Calde goes behind the KG's screen

Defense closes around him - and leads him to the baseline

and Bosh cuts the pass to the left corner - Before Rondo inbounds, Allen runs to the left to get the pass while AP has to go through KG's screen

and Scal's screen while Rondo inbounds the ball to an open Allen - Bargs goes with the help

and Bargs contests the possible shot - so Allen passes the ball to an open Scal because AP is still trying to reach Ray (less than a second since Scal's screen)

so Scal shots and gets 2 points.

AP goes through 2 screens to reach his guy and comes back to contest the shot in just 2 seconds, not too bad IMO ... just a very good play with more chances than Allen: KG after the screen goes to the paint, but that play is well defended by Bosh

and Calde, who is between Rondo and that area to deny that pass.

3rd play:

Bosh inbounds the ball to José while Rondo goes with the fullcourt defense - Calde cross the halfline

gets some space, waits - and passes the ball to Bargs when he gets some space

Bargs to Bosh - Bosh passes the ball quickly to Calde

who waits till Bargs gets a good position and passes the ball to him - Calde goes away from Bargs to avoid a possible double team from Rondo

[IMG][image]http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8323/vlcsnap385753ir9.jpg[/img]

and Bargs breaks Scal's defense going to the basket and getting the foul on Scal. Not shooting foul.

Raptors inbounds the ball ( yup, it's right ) - Calde with the ball after one second

Calde waits for the Bosh's screen - Calde leaves KG and Rondo behind

and shoots. Done.

4th play:

Rondo with the ball - passes the ball to Scal

Scal waits for Allen - and gives him the ball

Allen to Pierce - Moon bets -

and lost. No shooting foul.

Rondo inbounds for KG - who passes to Pierce

and this faces the basket - and shot with Moon contesting the shot. Done.

5th play:

Looks like KG joins Rondo defending at full court - Bosh inbounds for Parker

- who takes the ball to the offensive end- waits for his mates

- Bosh sets a screen and Parker goes to the center - and passes the ball to Bargs while Bosh is open

since KG stays with AP till Allen arrives -

so Barg passes the ball to Bosh - who goes to the basket and is fouled. Shot doesn't fall. Shooting foul, makes both free throws.

Good play, with AP breaking the full court defense and guys taking advantage of the KG's help.

6th play:

Rondo with the ball- waiting for Allen to -

pass the ball - Allen to Scal -

Scal to Pierce - And Pierce goes to the basket, watches Bosh ready for him (was with KG, poor Calde) -

and shoots. Done.

There isn't too much history in this play: Moon could not stay with Pierce (shame on you Moon !!!11!111) Bargs tried to help (at the shot Scal was wide open) and Bosh went to close his way, leaving Calde with KG but still closing the rebound (4 guys agains 2).

7th play:

Again, full court defense - so Bosh to AP again

while Calde has gotten some body guards -

Calde gives some instruction to Parker - Parker goes to the left -

Comes back to the right without his defender (behind Barg's screen) - Passes to Bosh

- And this passes to Moon, who is open thanks to his reputation as a shooter and because Calde has gone to the paint, Rondo too and there isn't another defender in the left side- Shoots. 3 points.

Celtics don't want Calde takes the ball, dunno why, if the guy can buy nothing for him or his mates.Scouts have no idea. :|

I guess it's safe to say that Calde is a force in attack: hey, double teamed without the ball (btw, those weren't the best Celtics defenders, Rondo and KG) while he went to the offensive end. No Kobe. No Chris Paul. No Lebron.

Just Calderon.

I also can tell good stories, and they really look pretty real. Of course, I don't think Calde is that force, but maybe some people don't understand what Calde can do: Without touching the

ball, led his team and got some space for Moon's open 3.

8th play:

Rondo with the ball - Rondo to KG -

KG to Pierce - Pierce tries to go inside, Bargs goes to the paint -

Pierce passes the ball to Scal for a open 3 - Shot doesn't go and Bargs fights for the rebound -

Bargs gets the rebound

Although it looks like Calde should have gone to defend that shot, when Pierce passes the ball he is going on Rondo and he hasn't time to come back.

9th play:

Bargs passes the ball to Calde - who passes the ball quickly to Moon -

who controls the ball - and returns the ball to Calde

- who gives some instruction - Goes to the right with Bargs putting a screen

- and passes to an open Bargs - who shoots, shot doesn't go but he gets the foul, failing the first free throw.

12th play:

Scal inbounds for Rondo - Rondo waits

- and passes the ball to Allen - goes to the left while AP is still at the KG's screen so Bosh follows him, Rondo going to the paint

- Calde closes the pass line to Rondo (Barg is looking for too) while Ray passes to Scal - this to Pierce -

And Calde goes to defend an open Pierce -

[IMGhttp://img246.imageshack.us/img246/9940/vlcsnap46256oi5.jpg][/img]

who gets a good pass to Rondo (Bargs, his defender, went to help) - and because Bosh is there he passes the ball to an open Allen at the 3 points line -

who shoots and scores. 3 points.

Calde was defending Rondo till he had to go with Pierce (Calde was the next guy to, so he had to go there and Bargs after taking some space comes back with Rondo, and then Bargs went to help again when he shouldn't because Calde was defending well that side and if Pierce had gone there still could have passed to Rondo with Bargs defending, while if he had stayed with Rondo he was in a good position to close the lane with Bosh behind him. But Bargs goes to cover the left side when Calde had already led Pierce to the right where Moon was to help. Instead of coming back to Rondo he followed with the help. AP had to go inside to help Bosh but there was two open guys at this side so he just couldn't do more.

Ok, team game needs to be played using the brains, indeed, this kind of game has to be practiced a lot, so when there is a little fail, thing goes down. And all the good teams play team defense and team offense, just watch KG doing helps to his guards while losing his man, regardless what have happened the plays before. That's the only way. Do the help and trust your mates to get some help when needed.

BTW, did Pierce some pump fake?

Some more pics to eliminate all doubts:

13th play:

Bosh inbounds for Calde - waits at the right side -

and goes to the center while Bosh starts going to the paint - so defense goes to Bosh and Calde pass the ball to an open Bargs -

who goes to the basket - and passes the ball to an open AP at the perimeter (Pierce's injury)

who shoots and fails, rebound for Scal.

14th play:

Scal with the ball - passes to Rondo and Calde goes to him -

Rondo faces Calderon - and goes to the left so does Calde -

and Rondo tries to go to the baseline while Calde has to deal with the KG's screen - Bosh is ready and goes with Rondo -

and Rondo passes to Scal - who passes to KG

- KG to Rondo - Rondo to an open Allen

- who gets the 3 points

Both teams' PFs are rotating at the screens, there is nothing new. The problem starts with Bosh too near to Rondo (see pic with Scal's pass to KG) and not looking at him, so when he starts to run, Bosh cannot reach him.

15th play:

Calde with the ball - Calde to AP -

AP again to Calde - and Calde to AP, but Scal is paying attention and goes from behind Bargs to cut the pass

Ok, Calde turnover, kill the guy. It happened once in the first quarter though.
