CBS Sports: Top 5 players ready for a breakout season

Quote:
3. Andrea Bargnani, Raptors: Few players in the league will benefit more from an offseason acquisition than Bargnani will from Toronto's sign-and-trade for Hedo Turkoglu. With his face-up ability, Bargnani will do more with Turkoglu's side pick-and-roll action than Dwight Howard was able to do in Orlando. One caveat: Picking Bargnani violates the rule of selecting players poised for breakout years when they're playing for a contract. Bargnani received his $50 million extension this summer, so his future already is in the bank. But after an utterly clueless 2007-08 season, Bargnani's efficiency and confidence improved dramatically last season -- especially after the addition of Jermaine O'Neal. Expect another jump for the 2006 No. 1 pick.

If Bargnani improves from last year, we're a flat out scary team

More like after the subtraction of Jermaine O'Neal.
What a weird take.

Maybe he means having O'neal on the team, in the dressing room and in practice helped Bargnani gain confidence, so that when he had his chance he ran with it?

The JO deals still doesn't bother me because he obviously had a major effect on Bargnani. So, I don't think that's a typo.

That's true. I remember that Bargs did give J.O. some credit for showing him a thing or two.
It's still worded strangely in the article. Let's face it, Bargs didn't come on until J.O. was no longer getting the bulk of the minutes at centre because of injury/trade or whatever.

Yep - it was the additiion and the subtraction. A bit like Mark Jackson's effect on Alvin.

Stuckeys been on this list the past 2 years. When are people going to realize hes never going to be a really good player? Hes a good player, but I think because hes STILL a tweener and because he doesnt have very many go to moves besides putting his head down and going to the basket that he'll ever make it big.

The restof the list looks good though. If Haywood gets hurt again I can see Mcgee winning the award.

Why are 80% of the players listed big men?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think more guards & wings have won MIP than big men.

More likely geting O'Neal got Bargs to realise he had to work harder if he wanted to not be stuck on the bench.

Combination of both I'd say.

I still say that seeing JO fail while on the bench and realizing that he could ultimately perform better once he had the chance was a big part of flicking the switch for him. I swear I could see it in his eyes in one game where JO was particularly lackluster.
