CBS Sports: Derozan a smarter player

Quote:
This season, there's been no explosion. DeRozan is averaging just .7 more points per 36 minutes. He has a PER of 15.3, right around the average for a player. He's not rebounding significantly more than he has at any point in his career or dishing more assists. (Advanced stats courtesy of Basketball-Reference.com.)

But watching DeRozan play, you notice a lot of differences. And when you take that information and then look closely in-between the data, you start to understand what's happened with DeRozan this year.

He's become more confident, more disciplined, more settled. He plays more within himself and in more versatile ways. He's a more complete player, and that's helped his minutes increase to 37 minutes a game. He's playing like he did when he was a 20 year-old rookie playing limited minutes, but now he's the player Dwane Casey counts on for long stretches.

Against Denver, DeRozan finished with the kind of efficiency that's becoming the norm for him. 18 points on 13 shots, with 7 rebounds and 2 assists. He had a late steal which, had the Raptors not inexplicably (sensing a theme?) bumbled it, may have been the difference. The work is there.

I've never been a believer in DeRozan, but this year you can see the difference. He's not breaking out, but he's moving his way slowly towards taking that leap, and that starts with what's going on upstairs.

Yep. I was never a big fan, never saw the athleticism everyone was talking about (like I see in Ross, for instance) - but DD has definitely become a smarter player this season.

And + 1.5 RPG so far this season over his career averages is nothing to sneeze at either - he is a guard, after all.

I liked the comments on playing in the post:

Quote:
For one thing, DeRozan has figured out he has to use his size. He used just 6.7 percent of his possessions last season in the post, where he was lethally efficient according to Synergy Sports. DeRozan has increased his time in the block this season to 14.9 percent, where he's the 10th-best player in the league at points per possession. DeRozan says it's something that he came to on his own this year.

"That was just me. I feel like I'm bigger than a lot of two-guards, and I think it's just effective. I look at guys like Kobe and, as they started to get older, they got better in the post. I just looked at it as, 'If I get better at it now, that's going to benefit me later.' It's something I think helps make me better than a lot of two-guards."
Quote:
DeRozan notes that just having size doesn't always give you an advantage in the post over two-guards. "Some are smaller. Some have quick hands and reach and get steals. You have to know your personnel, know who you're going against. Couple of nights ago, I'm going against Shannon Brown and he's tough. That's a guard you can't really back down, so you have to find other ways to post and score on them."
I'd like to see who else is in that top 10 for points/possession in the post...

I've been impressed with Demar this year. I thought he a doubled his rebound/assists stats, but I guess that's not the case. I assume Demar is going to turn into a guy that regularly gets stats like 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

I assume once these guys learn how to move the ball and space themselves that Demar's assist number will be pretty steady.

I'm loving the effort so far.

He is smarter but I'm still hoping that the pace of the growth will accelerate a little bit more.

Was always a believer! I think once Lowry starts beasting again, teams will stop game planning for DeMar.. he always seems to shrink when he's doubled.

yeah, only thing he has to work on is his random jump shots with tons on the clock, other then that, he's been solid. I know the coaches are doing their job teaching him, i saw it in one of the season previews on DD

im still not a fan, i just cant get behind a shooting guard who can't hit a 3,

i would prefer to move him for a high draft pick

derozan needs alot of work to get his points, Raptors run so many plays for this guy, so many screen options which leave our offense in a terrible place when the play fails, it usually leads to a bad shot by another player meanwhile derozan looks good even though it was his fault in the first place becausae Raptors spent so much time geting him a shot,

i feel like its ray allen/ rondo deal where the pg is waiting on ray allen to get free but gets stuck in a bad situation which leads to a bad shot by another player

ray allen is enjoying success now because they don't run screens for him in miami, its just open shots, lebron or wade down the lane and open shot corner 3

problem is derozan could never do this because he can't shoot the 3

He's hitting around 32% right now, which isn't bad. MJ didn't shoot >30% until his 6th year, just sayin.

2012-13 Regular Season NBA Player Stats and League Leaders - 3-Points - National Basketball Association - ESPN

He's 16th in points per shot amongst 2 guards, tied for 64th in the league, but that's an improvement. Not sure how "points per possession" relates to a player but it seems dumb compared to PPS.

Really the only "fans" who can't see Demar has improved or don't like him are Bargnani fans who are just angry their guy is now 3rd banana.

18.5/5/2/1 with average efficiency. How can you not be happy with it so far? Oh, and he's outrebounding our starting PF. Even those around the league who aren't fans are admitting he's gotten better and improved.

So you trade Kobe Bryant for a pick because he doesn't just stay still and shoot open threes. Apples to oranges.
