CBS Sports - Calderon 1 of 3 breakout players

Calderon getting some more pub:

Quote:

Jose Calderon, Toronto: If you think Calderon already has arrived, you wouldn't be entirely wrong. He played a lot of big minutes for the Raptors last season and did quite well with them.

Calderon's game is intriguing, and so are some of his numbers. He shot 52 percent from the field, including 43 percent from beyond the arc. He's a 91 percent free throw shooter and has an astounding assist-to-turnover ratio of better than 5-to-1.

Yet he's still on this list. Why?

Because his game and numbers are likely to improve now that he's the man in Toronto.

Not only did the Raptors trade T.J. Ford to Indiana, freeing up more playing time for Calderon, but Toronto also brought in Jermaine O'Neal, another legitimate frontcourt talent.

For the first time in his career, Calderon has himself a full-time point guard job -- and a new multiyear contract to go along with it, by the way.

He also has a game that isn't dissimilar from that of a younger Steve Nash. No, Calderon is not in Nash's class. But he's going to get a lot closer to it this season.

I don't know how much better his numbers can get realisticly!Let's face it if he's around 13PPG/9APG and is turning the ball over at or around the same rate (which will be difficult with more minutes),i'd be very happy. And as the season goes on we'll see how he holds up b/c at the end of last season he appeared tired.

I'm not expecting Jose to reproduce the percentages he put up last year, but I don't think it's unrealistic to expect a 14 and 10 season from the man.

Yea I could expect him to get those types of numbers. Mostly the assist could be that high. Maybe not the points but yea that is still realistic

This will happen only for the casual watchers who just follow the stats and didn't see Calderon when he was killing it last year. For everyone else he's already arrived.

Less points, more assists, Im calling 10 and 12

I'd be happy with similar numbers to last year but with higher MPG obviously. He hasn't gone through an 82 game season as "The" PG before and I just hope he can handle the minutes (I'm not saying he can't, its just not proven yet). He played very hard during TJs injury and I don't know if he can be expected to push it like that all season.

K my take on Calderon:

Scoring:
Calderon now has two strong post players to spread the floor and is getting more minutes
expect his ppg to increase from 11 to 15 cuz he gets more open looks

Assist:
Bosh once said that it was sometimes confusing for them to play with two radically different pg's. This time, he is the man in control. And he has a better finisher at the frontcourt, JO. Also, Kapono's game has improved and developed higher Bball IQ
Expect his apg to stay at around 10-10.5

Also I hate it when Calderon is compared to Steve Nash. I actually think JC is arguably at around SN's level. But their playing styles are totally different. And JC is a much better help defender than SN (steve nash plays like 36 minutes a game and still cant average 1spg)

Got some extreme predictions there, dude. Jose is a wicked point guard, but a 15 and 10 season is a lot harder than you're making it out to be. I'm not saying Jose can't do it (I do think that if he could put up numbers like that, it would put us in serious contention for a trophy), I'm just saying don't get your hopes up.

And at the same level as Steve Nash? Jose hasn't even made an all-star game yet. It's not even debatable. Call me when Jose's won his second MVP.

and jose caulderon is rated 66 in nba live 09, that's what americans think of him! DAMN YOU AMERICA

The MVP of West Hollywood 10-08-2008 11:35 PM

I'm honestly expecting something like 11/7. I think he was playing out of his mind when TJ was out last year, I don't expect him to keep that pace up.
