Catch Up - Raptors Offseason

Hey guys, been pretty busy over the summer so far and havenít been able to do much more than lurk around to see whatís been going on in the basketball world.

Anyways, to steal the attention and probably say whatís already been said a million times over, hereís what I think about what weíve done so far.
First off, most of you know that Iím not the biggest BC supporter out there, but I must tip my hat to him for the maneuvering heís been able to pull off throughout the off-season so far. Never saw the potential flexibility we had with contracts and players.

My favourite, Reggie Evans. Iíve been hoping for us to get him for sometime now. Heís the type of player I love to watch play, mean, dirty and knows his limitations. We all know what he can do on the defensive end of the court, but Iíve noticed he gets no recognition of how well he plays on the offensive end. No, he doesnít score buckets or anything like that, but the dude moves out there to make room for the guards to penetrate and get open looks. Iíve loved this dude since he was with the sonics, and watching him on a perimeter based team makes me a very happy man that heís with us. Heís a bone crusher with a wide frame thatís impossible for guards to fight through or around.

Jarrett Jack Ė pending obviously. I love it. Not the biggest fan, but I love the idea of cutting Calderonís minutes, especially with someone who can play defence. I know thereís a lot of Calderon supporters out there, but from what Iíve seen of him over the past season (injury or not) heís not a 30+ minute point guard. Especially considering how poor his defensive play is. I really doubt that Jack matches last years production, but itís the stability and insurance of having a player of his caliber that really makes me happy about the signing. Also, the thought of him playing the off-guard spot is alright with me as well. Thereís a lot of smaller two-guards out there these days, having someone who can match-up with them is essential.

Hedo Turkoglu Ė Shocked and surprised to say the least. I remember him being talked about throughout the season and I just couldnít imagine it happening without us having to renounce all of our free agents. Personally, I didnít like the idea and I sure didnít like the initial rumours that came out about him signing here for that amount without the four-way deal being in play. Five years for fifty plus million still scares me a little, but itís still a great play for our future. Heís not a player I could see burning out in the foreseeable future. Heís a smart player who could easily take us up to the next level, that being play-offs for now, and that alone makes me happy. There seems to be a lot of good PR coming out about Toronto, cheers to that! Heís already earned forty of his fifty million for that!

Antoine Wright Ė I really liked him in college. Actually hoped that we drafted him back in 05, but needless to say, heís disappointed. He should be a good role player who you can plug in for fifteen minutes a night, score some points, play some defence, but hopefully he wonít be relied on for much more. I remember reading an article on him making him out to be some defensive guru, not likely. Heíll be our new and improved Joey. Heíll frustrate us, heíll surprise us, I really doubt you see a great deal of consistency out of him.

Devean George Ė I was actually surprise when I found out that heís only 31. He seems like heís been in the league for much longer than that. If heís not cut, heís experience, championship experience and a good guy to feel in for ailing bodies. I really donít see him getting much burn since those minutes could easily go to either Derozan, Wright or Jack, essentially.

DeMar DeRozan Ė This kid is looking good. I didnít think much of him from what I read prior to becoming a raptor, but he seems to have an awesome attitude thus far into his career. His athleticism and want to learn is something to look forward to for the up-coming season. I just hope people donít kill him with expectations.

Overall Iím pretty freakin happy. It kind of sucks that weíre losing Parker, but thatís the business of the sport. Marion, I liked what he brought us here for a short period, but Iím glad that he wasnít re-signed.

From where I sit, if the Jack and Rasho signings fall through, our team is improved in almost every aspect from last season as a whole. More depth, stronger defence and more offensive creativity. Looks like we have an exciting season coming ahead, now letís just hope that it gets Chris excited enough where he wonít even entertain the possibility of leaving here!

Great to hear from you. Odd to see you with the novels and me with so many one-line posts these days.

I completely agree about Wright being Joey basically. And pretty much everything else to a T. I think Jack might be asked to score coming off the bench on some nights. Maybe most nights. But it's just the minutes and D that really makes a difference.

I've also liked what I've seen of DeRozan. He does not look like another Vince or your typical slam dunk kid. I actually think he looks a bit like a young Carmelo, with a frame that could bulk up in the same way. Am I nuts about that? His mid-range game is nice. If he can get the longer range and free throws he's going to help.

thanks LX

I like the idea of Derozan bulking up. He definitely looks like he could add 15-20lbs easily to his frame. Looking at pictures of him, he doesn't look like he has a tremendous amount of upper-body strength. He'll need it if he wants the defensive responsibility he's been talking about. He's 19, so there shouldn't be a reason he doesn't fill-out.

I like the Melo comparison. way better than VC ever was imo.

I can see that the bread and butter of DD's game is going to be in the mid-range (17' in), with the occasional 3 ball, much like 'Melo in his first 2 years.
DD can finish strong at the rim when its there, and hopefully, will not be expected to put on a "show" to sell tickets, unlike the mantle that was thrust on VC.

When he gets stronger in the upper body, he will extend his shooting range to consistently hit the 3ball, in the second and third years, adding the stretch factor to his game.

Like 'Melo? Its entirely possible, as the foundation is there with his current mid-range skills.

funkie, nice to have you back buddy. Even if it is for a quick visit.

After reading what you just said I have to say I haven't seen this much enthusiasm from you in years. Now I just got to get some of that enthusiasm to rub off on me.

Hope all is well my friend.

Good points on Derozan. I hope Rap fans don't expect the second coming of "Heir Canada." I was hearing Alvin Williams on the FAN 590 yesterday, and he was asked about Vince Carter & Derozan. Take it from a good source, he is in Vegas watching Derozan, and he was there with Carter in his prime, Alvin explained like this:

"Derozan has great athleticsm, but Carter was a Freak of Nature"

Hey Funk!
Thanks for reminding me about the Evans trade. Not that i forgot about it, but it totally got shoved in the back of my mind after the other moves. Like you said, Evans should really help the raps out a lot.

good stuff - let's not get carried away with the jack stuff - while unlikely, you can never tell. Who thought orlando would match gortat ...

Between the excitement of seeing hedu run the offense, and getting a first look at derozan in an nba game, the next three months will be impossible ...

good review JF, it has been a very solid bunch of moves that BC has given us to digest. I think JJ will sign and that DD will be a solid bench at the 2 until he grows a bit of bulk! this team is much better than last, and i think Bosh could be convinced to re-think his signing options at this point. Hedo was a huge landing for us!!

And Vince was never very good with the mid-range jumpers that were not of the fadeaway variety.
