Default Casey: "[We're] becoming a defensive minded team"

Quote:
"Andrea has done a tremendous job," Casey told Jeff Blair of Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Thursday morning. "He's working defensively, trying. He's going to the boards. Hitting the boards. Rebounding. Hitting people. I've been really proud of his progress."

When the Raptors drafted Bargnani, he drew comparisons to Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki. Bargnani has shown his vast potential on offence, but hasn't been able to transfer his skills to the defensive end of the floor. He has developed a reputation for inconsistent play and being soft on the defensive end.

Casey, an assistant coach with the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks before being hired by the Raptors, said Nowitzki heard similar criticisms to Bargnani and worked extremely hard to shed his "soft" label.

"A few years ago, (Dirk) faced the same," Casey explained. You could push him around. Dirk got tired of it. Got tougher mentally, tougher physically and did a much better job to compete in the paint. Now they didn't push him around. It's the same challenge I've given to Andrea. He's done a good job in camp so far. His post defence and also his rebound mentality."

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo has helped the cause by bringing in veteran defensive players such as Jamaal Magloire and Aaron Gray to work with Bargnani and help change the culture in the locker room.

"It's about changing the mindset and setting the tone for our guys and going in the right direction," Casey said.

good to hear... we need our PF of the future to really crank it up another notch this year! Hopefully his backups, Ed and Amir, can also improve! Then we're looking good baby!

This team hasn't played defense since the Kevin O'Neil days. Andrea is not the power forward of the future. I have a tough time seeing Andrea guarding faster power forwards, when he couldn't guard slower centers. The only advantage of putting Andrea out of the center position, is that the center is the last line of defence. As one Toronto writer put it, Andrea is the worst help defender in franchise history. Ed Davis will get the bulk of the minutes at the PF position, if Casey keeps his word regarding playing time and defensive accountability.

Have to agree with LKeet6, that is brilliantly worded about who's roll is what on the team

In the past years..they would just mention about wanting to improve there defence...This year they are just being Obnoxious about it..so I am optimistic about an improvement on D.
