Casey: We need to get JV and Ross some meaningful playing time

Quote:

“We want to make sure we stay on a mission but it was great to get those young guys quality minutes — they played the whole second quarter almost so it was quality minutes at that point,” said the coach.

The game was another opportunity for Casey to coax some minutes and get some much-needed experience for Valanciunas, the rookie centre who was back in the starting lineup.

The Suns don’t have a dominant inside presence — and lost what they have when Marcin Gortat left with a foot injury in the first quarter — and that allowed Valanciunas to get some work in.
“I wanted to play Valanciunas more but when they went to (Michael) Beasley at the five, that kind of took us out of that,” said Casey.

Valanciunas did play 20 minutes with 10 points and three rebounds; no Raptors starter played more than DeMar DeRozan’s 30.

“I thought they stayed with the task,” said Casey. “The hardest thing to do in the NBA is play with the lead and I was afraid we were going to relax a little bit and we didn’t. They stuck to the task.”

By trying to use Valanciunas as much as possible — but never at the cost of a possible victory — Casey is willing to put up with a few gaffes.

“We’ve got to accept a few more (mistakes). There’s only 20 games to go with J.V., we have to see what he can do, he’s improved somewhat from early in the year,” he said. “Early in the year they were just going down our lane willy-nilly and he’s gotten better but we’ve got to live with some mistakes from him and Ross just to make sure they get some meaningful playing time.”

From a strategic point of view I understand why JV doesn't get that many minutes.

If JV were a really good post scorer then keeping him in against someone like Beasley would make more sense, because he could dominate that match up in the paint.

Right now JV is more of an energy guy than a skilled player, so that limits his usefulness.

Beans 03-07-2013 10:26 AM

The other Raptors need to practice getting JV the ball. I saw lots of shit passes to JV who then bumbled the ball because he wasn't expecting it or the pass was uncatchable.

I guess if Casey is talking about rookies getting more time while Acy has been sent to the D-League then that's not a good omen for Acy.

Superjudge 03-07-2013 10:51 AM

Its fine for acy, he's getting more minutes than both of them

ok I hate casey. "by trying to use valanciunas as much as possible, but never at the cost of a victory"?

is he blind or something? our team plays better WITH JV rather than without, and no, small ball lineup isn't good 20 minutes a game.

Wouldn't it make sense to keep JV in and abuse the Suns inside? Who would guard him? Casey really says some bizarre things and comes off as very reactionary. He seems dead set on going smallball no matter what. This is sort of like Memphis saying "Well, Toronto went with Rudy Gay at the 4 so we had to take Zach Randolph out to match them." lol

Blaze 03-07-2013 11:06 AM

Hey Casey fuck off

Teams are going to start playing a PG at C so we have to put John Lucas on them LOL

Except that Zach Randolph is the best player on the Grizzlies.

JV is not the best player on the Raps and he wouldn't have abused the Suns on the inside.

Beasley would've torched him and you guys all would've been up in arms about how stupid Casey is for leaving him out there in such a huge mismatch.

We're talking about this Michael Beasley, right? The guy shooting 39% and is terribly inefficient and one of the dumbest players in the league? Yah, I bet he would have torched JV. :dead: I guess as soon as another team goes small, you agree with taking JV out of the game?

I'd bet on JV having his way with the Suns interior over Beasley going off.

Inefficient, dumb, whatever...the guy is still very talented. No way JV could've stayed with him.

Also, Beasley is 6'10 and weighs about the same, so I really can't see a player with JV's limited offensive game having his way with him in the post.

I could. beasley's not a great post defender, not even good. i'd be hard pressed to call him an average post defender, even though he's so long. JV would have eaten him unless for some phantom calls

But you can see Beasley having his way with JV? :MeUgly: If you say so... By your precedent, you're saying JV out against smallball matchups and are parroting Casey's fail vision of going small no matter what.

At this stage of his career JV's not even an average post player.

You dig?

You're impossible dude.

And you got caught trying to defend one of Casey's stupid decisions. Beasley is a scrub and taking JV out against him is like putting in Bargnani to match up better against Luke Walton's rebounding.

And who cares if JV struggles, it's more important he plays and gets experience in different situations.

Just because Beasley is playing the 5, doesnt mean JV has to guard him. You could put him on one of the Suns spot up players on the perimeter. Plenty of teams do this. I dont think Casey realizes this, or just doesnt trust JV.

And the rooks getting big minutes shouldve happened a LONG time ago.

BballWatcher 03-07-2013 01:01 PM

Hmm.. I could understand the GM saying this but the coach? You're responsible for minutes!!!!

Here's a suggestion, how about instead of pretending that Alan Anderson has a future with this team, playing Ross instead? It may make us slightly worse in the short term but way better in the long term.

And JV makes our D so much better, I don't get why he doesn't get more like 30-35 mins a night rather than 25 ish.

In addition to Beasley, the Suns had Marshall, Morris, Johnson and Tucker on the floor.

Which one of those is a spot up guy? Johnson maybe?

bjjs 03-07-2013 01:25 PM

This is all fucking crazy. We won easily in a snoozer, and JV ended the game turning the ball over twice in a row posting Haddadi.

Garbage time minutes are garbage - that whole game was garbage. Who cares. It was personal for Telfair and he won. That's all that game was about.
